I stayed 2 nights as a base to accessing the Kurobe Alpine Route. I had no clue about onsens so having the English explanation sheet really helped. All toiletries and a lovely robe are provided. The onsen is divided into male and female sections, being nude around randoms is a bit confronting at first but the benefits of the water are amazing, I slept so well afterwards. 

The one guy speaks really good English, the others a few words only. 

The only bad thing about this onsen is access by local buses. It takes 30mins to travel from Matsumoto alpico bus terminal across from the train station, and buses are every 30mins. Admittedly, I had to learn how to use the buses at the same time, but some of the drivers are mean. I managed to always just miss timings, miss my stop, feed coins and tickets into all the wrong holes etc. I have added the timetables to this review because I couldn't find this anywhere online.

Fantastic introduction to ryokans

The rooms were exceptionally big, specially when considering how Japanese hotel rooms typically look like. In our case, we opted for a western style room, which was a funny mix of what one could expect of a Japanese room (different areas within the room) and a western style (understood by this, a regular bed).

Upon arrival to the hotel, we were welcomed at reception without any trouble (important to mention, that there were no problems for checkin later than in the expected hours), and invited to use the onsen bath, which they opened half an hour more, specially for us. While we didn’t have enough time to check the room, we quickly wear our yukatas and went straight to the bath.

Back in the room, we discovered that the only way to take a shower in the morning was by going to the onsen (no shower in our room), which was a bit of a surprise, but totally fine with us. 

The morning breakfast was one of my favorites ever; rice, two different soups, usually some egg rolls or omelette, fish, some preserved veggies, and a bar with yogurts, salads and more eggs.

Overall, the facilities were exceptionally clean, although seemed a bit worn out, but nonetheless I would recommend it to anyone visiting Matsumoto and looking for a calm and relaxing stay.

Finally, the hotel was also providing a free shuttle bus in the morning to the city center and the staff was also very welcoming and friendly, and would always try to help even when there would be some language barrier.

Great starter for first timers at traditional Japanese hotels

Traditional Ryokan, decorated with taste, zen atmosphere and warm welcome. Functional rooms with all amenities, beautiful onsens (interior and exterior) and exceptional breakfast. A little bit out of the center but well served by buses. I recommend!!

Very good ryokan

A ryokan that also offers rooms with a western bed and bathroom (without shower). the onsen is interior and exterior, separate for men and women. although no English speakers make great efforts to attend to you politely and give you a plan with English instructions. the best of all was the dinner, extraordinary, varied, and with a delicate presentation. a great souvenir. the hotel is outside, we access by rental car. to get to Matsumoto castle you need to take a bus that leaves you at the same door. the stop is very close.

Excellent attention and a wonderful dinner.

I had one night here when visiting Matsumoto. The overall of this hotel  portrayed the traditional Japanese onsen hotel. In the room , there is no shower room, only wash basin sink and toilet. So you have to take a bath in shared bathroom (Japaneses style). 
How to get there,
Show the Japanese name of this Hotel to taxi driver, it costs about 2,000 yen. but if you want to save your money, take a city loop bus in front of the Matsumoto station to 'Utsukushigahara Onsen' bus stop.

truly Japanese atmosphere onsen hotel

A very nice traditional hotel! We have stayed here with 26 people and had a very nice dinner! Everything is very clean and good, really friendly staff who make your stay pleasant, they show you the rooms and explain the rules of the onsen! The onsen are very relaxing, and are open in the morning and in the afternoon/evening!

My husband and I stayed here in October 2016. We were hiking Kumamoto and decided to stay the night before heading back to Tokyo. Staff was very friendly. The rooms were OK, clean but nothing fancy. The price was reasonable. Onsen area was one outdoor and one indoor bath. Rooms had a 1/2 bath ensuite but you had to shower at the onsen area. No problem for us as we both wanted a long soak after the hike. We had a drink (sake) at the bar and slept well. Overall, it's a nice hotel a little off the beaten path but was a good experience.

1 Night- Quick Stay

The main attraction of a onsen ryokan is the onsen. Here the indoor onsen is fully furnished and the water is hot.  I stayed in a western room with twin bed. Its size is more than double of the standard business hotel room in downtown. The room has no attached bathroom, only a toilet, and one have to use the shower at the onsen. 
I did not eat at the hotel. It is about 15 minutes drive from Matsumoto JR station. It will not be very easy to reach if you are not travelling on a car.

Traditional onsen ryokan

After staying in several ryokan, this one is a bit intermediate between a traditional ryokan and a hotel. The rooms are in the west, with a bed and not a futon, good size and well equipped. Meals are served in a common room and not in a room. The onsen is very good with very wide opening hours which is very appreciated (especially since there are 30 rooms...). The outdoor bath even though it is small is very pleasant. The breakfast was not as good as in other places visited but acceptable. The staff is very helpful. We had not booked the dinner just in the evening and we were advised to go to a sushi restaurant where we enjoyed a few minutes!

Between Ryokan and Hotel

The hotel is very nice, clean and the rooms are very comfortable.The Onsen is included, as is the Japanese breakfast, which is amazing!!!The staff doesn't speak English (only one of them), but for me it was part of the experience, as we were the only Westerners in the hotel.100% recommended.The only bad thing: there is no ghost in the room, you have to go down to the onsen.
