Residence Walchhof

Although the accommodation offered at the Residence Walchhof is mainly holiday apartments, they also offer a B&B service which is what we availed of and where we spent 5 nights. The Residence Walchhof is located in Scena/Schenna which is a beautiful small tyrolean town in the Alto Adige province in northern Italy. The nearest big town is Merano/Meran about 10 km away. Although officially part of Italy, the Alto Adige is very tyrolean (i.e. southern German/Austrian) in nature. For example, the style of the houses, the food, and the clothes here are all typical tyrolean. Although Italian is used here, most of the inhabitants speak German. So, if you intend visiting this region expecting a typical "Italian experience", you are likely to be disappointed. However, if you enjoy spectacular alpine scenery and outdoor activities such as hill walking, then this is the perfect place for you. Most of the tourism in the area is organised around hill walking, there are hundred of different routes mapped out and sign-posted, very reasonably priced bus services to take you around to the different routes and even cable cars for those who would prefer to take the easier option! The Walchhof is located in the centre of Scena/Schenna with stunning views of the surrounding mountains (see the attached picture taken from our bedroom window). The residence is a family run business and the manager is Elisabeth who is a wonderful warm friendly and helpful host with very good English. The residence is a modern structure (in the tyrolean style) and is spotlessly clean with good Wi-Fi throughout. It has an small outdoor pool and garden area with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. As we went for the B&B option here, we had a superb breakfast (fruit juice, cereals, cold meats/cheese, fresh fruit and cakes) served up to us every morning in the garden beside the pool. The breakfast was a meal in itself and would set you up for a day's exploring around the area. Its central location means that there quite a number of restaurants and bars within a few minutes walking distance of the residence. We would strongly recommend the Walchhof to anyone visiting this beautiful region of Italy.
