We were lucky to get a King Canyon View Suite with a gorgeous view of forest on one side, canyon on the other. There is a train that runs through the gorge but isn’t visible from the balcony, hence  the “ ghost train”. I found it very soothing. Hawks Nest park has some great trails including one that runs where the old mine operated, very interesting. Breakfast at the hotel isn’t great but it is free, dinner was wonderful though. Loved the fried fish and the veggie lasagna, also the chocolate cake for a splurge. The dining room view is breathtaking. The jet boat ride was fun, worth the money. We will be back.

This was an interesting place to stay.  At first, the building seemed very institutional.  But our room was spacious.  There was free breakfast in the restaurant.  The views from the restaurant were AMAZING!  Food was meh.  This was definitely a budget-friendly location.

We stayed here because of its close proximity to the the New River Gorge Canyon Rim Visitor Center. We enjoyed our Canyon View Room for its stellar view! The rooms are located in a bit of a maze that made it seem fun and nostalgic. Our bathroom was on the smaller side but seemed to have been renovated. Would definitely recommend this location and would stay again if back in the area.

The Hawks Nest State Park Lodge is a hidden jewel! The park lodge is in a convenient location for visiting all the parks in the area but be sure to make your reservations early. We stayed in two different rooms because we made our reservations only 2 weeks in advance. On the first night, we stayed in a wonderful King Suite Forest View room, which was in a corner near the pool. This room was very nice and so quiet. 
The next two nights we stayed in corner King Suite Canyon View room. This room had an incredible view of the canyon from a wall of windows with a nice balcony to enjoy. The room's second set of large windows had a beautiful forest view. The main room was very spacious and well appointed. The bonus was to wake up in the mornings and sit on the balcony to watch the ever-changing canyon views. Then again in the evenings for stargazing...absolutely glorious!
The rooms were "impeccably clean" (I cannot stress this point enough!), very well appointed, very peaceful, with a very quiet HVAC system that was in a location where it did not blow directly on you while sleeping, the wonderful bed (not too hard, not too soft), the sheets perfectly fit the bed, the views could not be matched by any other hotel in the area and the beautiful interior decor. 
The bathrooms were very tight, but the showers were a nice size with wonderful shower heads and great water pressure. The towels were so thick and fluffy, too. The lighted mirrors were a very nice touch. The only negative was the bathroom size, as mentioned they are very tight.
The beautifully tiled entry way with wonderful oak shelving/closet was absolutely perfect for a traveler. There was an abundance of storage shelves, perfect for stowing your stuff.
I cannot say enough words of appreciation for the cleanliness of this lodge and their wonderfully helpful and friendly staff. Sara was a wonderful front desk host and was so kind and considerate. We will definitely stay here again when we are in the area.

Perfect location for nature lovers! We thoroughly enjoyed our four nights at the lodge in a room overlooking the forest and valley.  Our room was clean and comfortable, with a delightful balcony where we enjoyed coffee in the early morning. Breakfast was decent, and ample, and the view down to the forests and river was magnificent.  Service was courteous and efficient.  We especially liked the trails running from the lodge down to the river.  A highlight was the Hawks Nest Rail Trail, which follows the creek up to Ansted.  Beautiful scenery, including some nice waterfalls along the creek and awesome cliffs in the canyon.  The trail is well-maintained and easy to hike, though it is a bit long.  Strongly recommend this place if you are looking for peace and tranquility and awe-inspiring scenery.

Nice hotel on the side of the mountain! Great view of the Canyon and river from balcony and the resteraunt downstairs!! Was close by to New River Gorge Bridge which was cool to see!  Highly recommend the Hawks Nest if in the area! 

We loved staying here. It's beautiful and peaceful.  We especially want to thank Amanda at the front desk when we had a medical emergency.  She was kind, compassionate and so helpful. We'll never forget her. The staff, from Amanda and Kelly at the front desk to the restaurant to the cleaning lady were so friendly! Our room was immaculate, the bed and pillows were comfortable. I'm a stickler for a clean room and hotel and we have no complaints about cleanliness or the staff.

The only complaint is the breakfast, it wasn't the best food quality. The staff however was great.



Nostalgic trip around winding roads to a great WV State Park.  We enjoyed the views and fall foliage.
Gift shop was not as great as we remembered in our younger years.

Super friendly staff, well-maintained grounds and very clean room with a FABULOUS view! This park has lots to do - trails, seasonal pool, jet boat - and it’s close to the bridge, the National Park and other lovely state parks. We made it out home base for exploring, and it was perfect!

Gorgeous views, clean and quiet room, friendly staff. And convenient to so much outdoor fun at New River Gorge. A perfect stay. Loved the balcony!! Tried the restaurant for dinner (amazing views) and the food was good - and local beers served with chilled glasses were great after a day of hiking. Free coffee and breakfast  in the morning - not the best but FREE and the most minor of issues. Free Wi Fi was also a nice amenity. Highly recommend.

Hear the ghost train whistle

We visited here a few weekends ago for a two night getaway. I would have preferred staying in October when the foliage is the best but they were already booked. As it was we booked and paid for the first night for our room, to include a canyon view. They also have forest views, which overlook the parking lot. By the time we got to the place, all of the second floor rooms were given away. Our first night was spent overlooking a fence. So, thinking ahead, I called and asked to have the room changed for the following night to the room we were promised. We did get the second floor room the next night, with probably the best view in the place, and would have been spectacular with the changing leaves. Alas, we couldn't get those dates. This isn't a huge hotel; I believe there are only 31 rooms. There is an onsite restaurant which did include breakfast but it was the exact same breakfast two mornings in a row. Hubby doesn't care for sausage or gravy, so he just had cereal I think. I ate the eggs, sausage, and maybe toast but I wish there were more non pork options there. How about some fresh fruit? That would've been nice. The beds were very comfy, the bathroom was updated, the sheets were nice and it was really quiet at night. I am sure the place is packed after September, and it is pretty peaceful once you find it!

Beautiful Lodge and Location

If You Are Searching for Tranquility and a Beautiful View of Nature, This Lodge Has It!

We had a standard 2 queen room with balcony facing the gorge. The room was clean, although basic. It was fine for a few days, although we would have preferred a suite (they were not available when we booked). Room had a coffee maker - keurig, which was better than the coffee in the lodge which was the worst coffee, more like coffee flavored water. Horribly weak. We requested a mini frig for an additional fee (+$15 for entire stay). The view was fantastic. Restaurant was ok, nothing special. Friendly, helpful staff. Grounds well maintained, athough it was surprising to see a butterfly bush (invasive!) in the landscaping. The building layout is odd. Overall nice stay, and we appreciated the cleanliness of the room and lodge. The location is in the state park and close to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and the bridge. Not much in the town, but Fayetteville was not too far and had several good dining options.

Beautiful,  peaceful, friendly,  very clean!

Rooms are a little on the small side (the outsides of the beds basically touch the walls) and are not luxurious as the website claims, however. they are nice and have been recently renovated and are very clean. Beds are decent. Bathroom small but has shelves and enough hooks and towel bars to make it workable. No tub, but full size shower with glass doors and a nice rain shower head and good water pressure. Private balcony is nice but screen doesn’t keep out bugs at night., so be sure to close the glass doors at night. The views of the gorge are nice. There are no fridges or microwaves. There is a small coffee maker but that was not clean inside.
Standard free hotel breakfast in the restaurant. The staff are all very nice and go out of their way to be helpful. The building itself is a very strange layout. You enter on the third floor, but the lower first and second levels are a weird maze of dead end cinder block hallways. The other halls wind around in strange ways. There are no elevators for the rooms, only utility stairwells. The small restaurant has a nice view, somewhat limited menu, nothing vegetarian. 
There aren’t really any activities available other than a small pool (which is quite clean, looks fairly new) and hiking. There is a jet boat service at the bottom of the gorge. When we booked the room the website listed mini-golf and a nature center, basketball court snd tennis. Those activities are part of what made us book here, but none of them are available anymore, other than the crumbling basketball court, however they no longer have basketballs to borrow. There is a new looking small playground.
All in all, the lodge is fine as long as as you are coming to spend time in the area. If you are looking for a lodge with things to do, this is probably not for you.

Perfect location for visiting New River Gorge

My husband and I were riding our motorcycles from Memphis back home to NE PA. We chose to ride through West Virginia which was like riding in Heaven. The mountains and roads are spectacular.  Both of us wanted to retire early on Tuesday night and chose to stay here at the Hawk's Nest Lodge.  The front desk representative was so nice and welcoming and made us aware that this lodge is operated by the State Park system which was a bonus. The room was clean and the sheets and comforter were crisp white. The restaurant in the lodge has a view which overlooks the beautiful mountains and you cannot help but just stare outside at the surroundings. Payton was our waitress and her service was exceptional along with Crystal and Dustin at breakfast time. My husband had a steak, cooked perfectly and I had the chicken smothered with onions, cheese, and peppers. Delicious and affordable.  They were only open until 8pm but this may be because it is operated by the state park. The place is so quiet and peaceful.  We had the best sleep there. If we ever plan on visiting this area again, we will be sure to book here.
