The Horse Guards

The room was large but snug with a lot of drawers and a walk-in wardrobe and a wet-room type modern bathroom. We were given the choice of housekeeping or not and of new towels and linen every day or not All the staff were interested in us but not intrusive and the breakfast was consistently good especially the fresh soft fruit and coffee. A wonderful rest with great places to visit around.

What an amazing find. Everything about the Horse Guards is outstanding. Had a night stop last night. There are 2 rooms. The Blue Room and The Royal Room. Both have recently been refurbished to an incredibly high standard. Extremely comfortable beds, quality furniture modern bathrooms, warm and cozy on a foul winters night. I stayed in the Royal Room. 

The Landlord and Landlady could not be more pleasant. Old school. Heart and some in the business which shines through it. None of the awful “managed chain” dross. 

A lovely bar area with log burner and a good range of beers and wines. The menu in the restaurant was simple, but varied. Something for everyone, but not pages and pages of Eating House drivel. Freshly made, freshly cooked seasonal delights, prepared and cooked by a chef with passion and pride. 

Breakfast was without fault. Fresh, plentiful and perfectly cooked.

I travel the length and breadth of the country and this was an absolute gem. Try it and like me, you will be planning your next visit. Absolutely outstanding in ever sense. 

We had a lovely meal last Saturday whilst a large percentage of the population were watching Strictly. Great food, for very reasonable prices, in a first class modern but characterful British Pub. Difficult to improve upon for what we wanted. Beautiful fresh fish in the fish and chips and really tender and tasty calves liver. As per the title perfect for a Royal and definitely nothing to be blue about.

I pass through this area regularly and sometimes need a place to rest my weary head.  I have not stayed here before but happily The Horse Guards turned out to be an excellent choice.  Lovely welcome.  Spotless airy room.  Good breakfast.  Terrible mattress (but I still slept well).  So much better than using a Premier Inn type place. 

We chose to stay at the Horse Guards as we were visiting Highgrove House for an evening garden tour and decided to make a mini break out of it.  Arthur and Janette were very friendly hosts and knowledgeable about the area. We thoroughly enjoyed the choice of breakfast available and the Royal Room we stayed in was comfortable with lovely furniture and lots of space with a big bathroom.  I’d definitely recommend staying here.

My husband booked one night here to celebrate a special birthday. We stayed in the Royal room and loved it. Clean, light and spacious with lovely views across the fields.The shower was fantastic with two shower heads and was clean and bright. We had asked the owners if we could book in a little earlier. No problem at all. We had dinner here and the food was really tasty. Not often I cannot finish a fish and chip supper but just could not quite manage it!!! We thought the breakfast was lovely, served by Sarah, who was so friendly. Best scrambled egg I have had and my husbands full english was really good. Sad we could only stay one night but we will definately come back for longer as we loved the relaxed and friendly hosts and beautiful room. Thankyou for a lovely Birthday stay.

We stayed in the Blue Room and had two lovely nights' sleep. The room was immaculately clean and blissfully quiet. The breakfast was really good and the hosts were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Stayed here for a night in the blue room, a quirky beautiful room. The room was spotless and immaculate. We had everything we wished for on our stay. The horse guards is a beautiful quaint building. We had a great relaxing stay. The breakfast was lovely in the morning! We would definitely stay again. 

The staff are delightful, food delicious and rooms spacious and well equipped. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and there was a good atmosphere.
Even though we were a bit early for check init was no problem. It is close to Tetbury and Malmsebury both of which are interesting to visit. I thoroughly recommend the place.

Excellent room, friendly and efficient service, great food.

Having enjoyed stays at pub B&Bs previously, we stayed here for one night as part of our trip around the UK. The location is quietly situated in a small hamlet, approximately fifteen minutes’ drive from the nearest town. If you need the internet or mobile coverage, the rural location may not be ideal, however the location suited us. The rooms are accessed via a separate entrance, allowing you to come and go as you please. The room was large, warm and spacious with a king-sized bed, offering views across the countryside. The mattress was ok, possibly a little tired, with ample pillows. The bathroom is also spacious, and well fitted out with a walk in shower, although the towels could be refreshed.

We ate dinner in the restaurant, and the food was excellent, particularly the pate and the goats cheese mousse for starters. Food is sourced locally, and we’ve never tasted such tasty carrots (it sounds odd to compliment carrots, but they were so sweet!). We both enjoyed the traditional breakfast the next morning, particularly the garlic mushrooms, and the owners have clearly recruited an excellent chef.

Although the accommodation and the food certainly met our expectations, we felt slightly unwelcome although we can’t quite put our finger on why. Perhaps we just simply caught them on a bad day, but we would stay elsewhere if we were in the area again – and indeed did the following night. Unfortunately, due to a communication failure between the owners and a staff member, we were double charged for our accommodation and meals which also put a dampener on the visit. They were apologetic and processed the refund however it left us slightly out of pocket due to bank fees and exchange rates.
