The Border Hotel

This is a lovely hotel with a friendly welcome. If you've been walking then you'll really appreciate the deep hot bath.There a nice bar with food service downstairs and breakfast was great.

After walking The Pennine Way, great place to finish!  Very very nice People,  good pub, good food. I was quite exhausted after ten days walking in the mud/snow. They really took care about me. Very helpfull,   nice warm pub with fireplace. Great welcome. THANKS

Lovely hotel in a picturesque village and great to find after a long days walking on the st Cuthberts Way. We found that all the staff were amazing friendly staff, especially Chantal who went above and beyond and we can’t thank her enough for everything.

Had dinner here after a long days walk. The food was good, a reasonable choice of dishes, the ones we had were well cooked and good portions. The service was very friendly and welcoming, with a good ambience allowing hikers to chat about their days experience.

Lovely atmosphere, great people and food was as good as it gets. They always welcome you. Very genuine people, this shows from the service, food and atmosphere.. what’s not to like!? Have been coming here for over a year now and just wish I lived closer, so I could enjoy myself and a have a wine or two.. instead of driving. 

Absolutely loved it! Our apartment room was perfect for my and my two sons and the staff could not have been more helpful. Looking for an excuse to go back already!

A very friendly welcome from the landlord and a free half pint at the end of our Pennine Way walk.
Evening meal and breakfast were very good, with good service.

Stayed here for one night whilst walking the St Cuthberts Way and this was most certainly a very welcoming venue after a long day walking. Warmly greeted by staff and quickly checked into our room.We had dinner here and our food choices were very good supported by some great beer .Room was fine and had all that one needs for a comfortable stay.Breakfast was fab with all the usual choices and lots of it .We ordered a packed lunch for our next days walk ,various choices and very welcoming after a long day on the hills.All in all we loved his place and hope to return.

A fabulous drink at the end of a long walk in the hills. The landlord was attentive, had a great sense of humour and was really helpful. The drinks were good and he introduced us to a new game to play whilst we were enjoying a drink. They have a great collection of games on offer should it be your thing and an open fire to add atmosphere and warmth. We'd highly recommend for a drink (we didn't eat or stay over so can't comment on these aspects).

We stayed at the Border Hotel for a couple of nights while walking St Cuthbert’s Way. The bath was a very welcome addition to the bathroom & we certainly made use of it during our stay. The bed was a little too soft & a bit lopsided but after our hikes we slept like logs anyway. This is a no frills hotel but it had everything we needed. Hearty food & a lovely friendly team.

Great Place to Stay 

Great drink. Lovely relaxed pub. 

I had the pleasure to stay here while working local. What a great place. The food was good, the host and his team excellent. The rooms are very comfortable and for once not too hot!!! I am being really picky here but I had a bath and ran out of hot water. I would still rate this as a 5/5. I will be back.

Excellent place

I stayed at the Border Hotel after completing the Pennine Way, and I couldn't have been happier had I stayed anywhere else. Pretty emotional to have my photo taken under the sign to mark the end of my hike, and I then received a very happy and hearty welcome to the hotel. Room was very large and comfortable, allowing for a great night's sleep. Shower was super powerful so mark that up too. Food at dinner and breakfast was lovely, and I'd happily recommend the Border Hotel -- whether you are hiking or not. 

Top place to end my trip

Really enjoyed our stay at the Border Hotel.  Rooms are comfortable with the usual amenities - tv, bath/shower, tea/coffee etc.  There's a  cosy bar (that had a roaring fire going throughout our stay) & I think a lot of the customers we were locals & certainly very friendly.  Breakfasts are extensive (including the whopping full Scottish we braved one morning).  The hotel's restaurant is good too.  We'd booked to eat with them on our first night & the food proved very good.   We had originally  thought we'd probably be eating out at other restaurants in the towns we'd be visiting on at least a couple of nights during our stay but we didn't come across anywhere that looked like it came up to our hotel so we ended up eating there every night.  We particularly enjoyed our last night.  It was a quieter night in the bar so we ended up eating there instead of the restaurant & spent the rest of the evening listening to music & chatting to the owner & a couple of local guys.  This hotel is ideal if you're a walker or just like us want to explore the area which is beautiful & interesting.  We're used to staying in pretty impersonal hotels which is not like the Border at all - James & Julie made us feel hugely welcome & it was nice to feel part of the hotel's family for our short stay.

Excellent

This was an all round excellent visit. It ticked many boxes. The whole ambience and look of the pub just feels right. The locals were very friendly and made us feel welcome right from the start. I’m assuming it was the owner who was playing the music ( the excellent Sam Cooke) and even though he didn’t like our recommendation (George Formby indeed!) he’s doing a superb job at the hotel. The food and wine were top notch and plentiful and we ate in the conservatory which added to the atmosphere as the rain batter red the roof. Cherry on the cake was being offered a lift back by the lovely locals as it was still pouring down. Highly recommended.

Superb

Stayed overnight whilst walking St Cuthbert's Way. We are avid followers of the Spine Race so this was on our bucket list! Lovely room with a superb view of the village green and last stretch of the Pennine Way. We even had a little annexe with a sofa and TV. Friendly atmosphere, with lots of other walkers. Enjoyed our evening meal in the bar too. Good bowl of porridge in the morning, served by friendly staff. Would definitely return.

Comfortable stay, would definitely return

As a lot of people do, we stayed here on completing The Pennine Way.  I suspect the hotel gets a lot of custom this way and trades on its reputation and location a bit. We had a perfectly adequate stay, with good accommodation. We ate in the restaurant which was average, again perfectly adequate but not quite as good as it purported to be - eg the cheap pub food approach of sauces in little plastic packets
The service wasn’t brilliant - in the restaurant we were just forgotten, and the drink we ordered just didn’t appear. Breakfast we were served by a nice lady who was doing it for the first time and learning on the job.  No criticism of her, as the hotel should actually train staff before they start work. But these are improvement points - this is not a bad hotel, just that it could be better, given what you pay
