Visited this quaint little pub for the first time this evening. What gem situated in a really pretty village. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Good choices on the menu and  specials board. The food was delicious  will definitely return and recommend to friends and family.

Spent a week in a cottage in Buckland Monachorum and made 3 trips to this lovely pub. Food was great, lovely pint(s) of Jail ale and the rose good too. Felt really welcome and enjoyed chilling in the garden and the bar. Even dog treats for out Westie!! Thank you

We have just spent a week in the apartment above this wonderful pub just because in the past we have visited the pub and loved it so much. Our apartment was two bed room, superbly appointed and immaculately clean and well equipped. Mandy was a superb host who made us very welcome as indeed did so many of the locals. The pub is such a great local pub with plenty of atmosphere,  lots of local beers and the meals were excellent, plentiful with a specials board as well. We couldn’t fault the place and looking forward to visiting again soon.

Booked our first outing after lockdown. 
We both had an amazing Ploughman's with all the trimmings and washed it down with a pint of Jail ale. This is as good as any you can get anywhere in Devon.  Very Corvid safe, good service.

Following our lunch visit and review of the 4 August (see seperate TripAdvisor in pub/restaurant section), we decided to stay for a couple of nights in the Golden Hind suite which is above the pub. (You won't hear a thing). Outstanding value. You would pay double. Spacious, two bedroom apartment, vaulted beamed ceiling. Comfortable and beautifully set up, fully equipped with everything you need. Fresh decor, furnishings and clean. Great  food in the traditional bar below with log fires for cosy winter  days. A traditional village locals' pub. Why go further? Delightful owner and team. 4 star AA and in the Good Pub and Good Beer Guides.

Sat in  the garden enjoying the Autumn sunshine. I had my usual  prawn baguette with side of skinny fries and my partner had the steak and ale pie (homemade shortcrust pastry) with chips. Followed by chocolate brownies for dessert. A perfect way to relax.

Staying in a cottage owned by Garth and Mandy just a few doors down, it was inevitable we’d end up in the Drake Manor Inn most nights. The food was exceptional (and the portions super generous) and a good choice of proper ales. Lovely friendly staff and a proper village pub feel with locals who were happy to chat to us ‘outsiders’. Definitely go for the Sunday roast - it was giant. We’ll definitely be back.

Our family of four enjoyed a wonderful four night stay at the Drake Manor. The flat was really well furnished and had everything we needed. We ate in the pub on two evenings and the food was fantastic! Huge thanks to Mandy for making us feel so welcome.

The Drake Manor inn was recommended to us for a Sunday roast.Had a very nice meal.Meat & veg were great.Extra side portion of Cauli cheese was huge.Lovely old pub.Great friendly service.Highly recommend a visit.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Lovely little pub in the pretty village of Buckland Monachorum, building dating from the twelfth century. Nice selection of ales and ciders and fantastic food whether you're having plain or fancy - even the fish & chips was cooked to perfection with fresh local ingredients and really good homemade tartare sauce.

It's a beautiful, cosy, old building - prettily and unpretentiously decorated with brass harness decorations and teacups hung on the beams, lovely old fireplaces now fitted with wood burners, low, timbered ceilings, creating a snug enough space that you know that on a winter's evening this will be warm and welcoming. On a summer's day, on the other hand, there is an attractive beer garden, with a stream running by it, next to the Church. Great for a family meal.  

The pub has a friendly, relaxed feel. Not too crowded or too stilted. Dogs are welcome.

The main door is level access. I was there with my friend and my husband who both have restricted mobility and they both found it easy.to move around there. Seating is comfortable. What I did not note is whether the door would be wide enough for a wheelchair and what turning space was like inside.

Parking is on-street or the Church has a car park opposite which is they are happy for people not attending church to use provided they vacate about 45 mins before a service is due to start.

On a Sunday, it is difficult to get a park - whether because of religious fervour or the excellence of the roast dinners at the pub.  However, just up the road is the Garden House, which has parking for their visitors, so you could combine a visit to these lovely gardens with a trip to the pub, leaving the car at the Garden House and strolling down the public footpath to the village - an ambling walk through fields, along a stream, past the Church.  Sadly this footpath is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. Entrance to the Garden House is £10 for adults, free for children. Or annual membership for one costs £30 and gives unlimited entrance to the Garden House, Trebah, Coleton Fishacre and Trematon.

The 55 bus runs to Buckland Monachorum from Yelverton about every hour, Mon - Sat between roughly 8:45 am and 7 pm. Number 1bus runs from Plymouth and Tavistock to Yelverton about every 15 minutes.

You can also walk from Yelverton to Buckland Monachorum. This takes about half an hour at a gentle pace, across flat moorland.

Trains run from Plymouth and Gunnislake to Bere Alston from where you can walk via Denham Bridge to the pub. However this involves a steep hill, and is not great at rush hour, when the narrow road gets fairly busy, making for not such a relaxing walk.

There is lovely countryside hereabouts including nearby Double Waters. Buckland Abbey is close by. St Andrew's Church next door, well worth a look itself, was the family Church of Sir Francis Drake and it is highly likely Drake would have visited the pub building (then a maltings).

Great atmosphere in this cosy village pub. The beetroot salad with hazelnuts and blue cheese was absolutely delicious, it's so nice to find an unusual salad on a pub specials board, especially a vegetarian one! I wish there were more vegetarian choices on the main menu. The apple and rhubarb crumble was very tasty. I have awarded 4 stars because I would have appreciated more variety on the menu. Friendly local village pub, well worth a visit.
