Rattviksgarden Hostel

We enjoyed a two-night stay to attend a Dalhalla Concert. The rooms were in excellent condition and clean.
The breakfast was as good and varied  as could be expected. The staff was very nice and helpful.

A good hostel in beautiful buildings.

Jekyll and Hyde.

Stayed several times. Always dealt with the lady owner. She couldn’t be nicer, more helpful and welcoming. That’s why we came back.

Last visit we met the gentleman owner. He couldn’t be more bad tempered, rude, and I’ll toned. Has an attitude that helping run the business is an imposition. My advice, hire a receptionist and keep him away from guests if you want them to come back.

Basic hostel, 3/5 but 4/5 if you get to meet her.

If you have to deal with him, sleep in the car but 1/5 if you must stay.

Jekyll and Hyde

The owner is terrible.  He told me I couldn't put my luggage on the spare bed, and that I couldn't keep my own personal ski bag in the room (same as the other piece of luggage, just as clean), that he would keep it in another building under his control.   

On another popular booking website he (Ingmar) represents a laundry room for use by guests, then he said, actually no - guests could not use the laundry, we had to turn our clothing over to his wife to clean at her leisure, whenever it was convenient for *her* - which is unreasonable when you are travelling and need things done when you need to do them yourself, due to time constraints.

I emailed him almost two weeks in advance to ask if a hair dryer would be possible to save myself from extra luggage weight, he said 'yes' (it was the middle of the arctic winter so a hair dryer is essential) and it wasn't made available.  

The door in the room (it is a hostel) wasn't locking properly, and the man was just very very controlling.  I left after one night, as I didn't want a confrontation and new controlling rules imposed on me every day, and when I expressed my displeasure in a peaceful way, and said about the hair dryer, he grabbed the hair dryer and slammed it down on the counter, near my hand, smashing his own hair dryer into bits (I'm a doctor and use my hands, so they are precious to me).  I had to tell him, "one more wrong move or abuse on your part and I phone the police immediately, you are out of control and crazy!".

Also my room for which the lock didn't work, was a flimsy door the other side of the social room and other guest were watching a loud television programme until very late.  So my exhaustion from travelling was further disrupted by no sleep.

Also he claims there is free wifi, but he didn't give me the code, and when I phoned him at 9.20pm for it, he said he was "in bed and I would have to wait until the next day".  I insisted on the code as I own a very busy health care clinic in Britain, and have to have access to the internet.

I strongly suggest that you go elsewhere.  I had a lucky escape.

Stay Elsewhere - Owner

This hostel gave me in one night about 100 bed bug bites, ONE NIGHT (I went for a consert at Dalhalla). So you would think that the cleaninglady if she does her job would have seen one or two. And not only, that I got so many bites, but I brought them home. It took months to clean with Antisimex. Worst experience ever. And the bites are not like mosquito bites, they stay for weeks and very very ichy. I have stayed in Rättvik one time after this and then stayed at Hotell Lerdalshöjden. The price did not differ that much, but the standard is sooo much higher!!! I realy recomend that hotel.
