Awarradam Jungle Lodge

After an one hour flight and a 30 minutes boattrip we reached this beautiful place in the rainforest. We stayed there for four nights on an island in the middle of the river in a nice wooden cabin with an amazing view on the river and hammocks on the terrace. There was only one other couple. We were very well looked after (safety first!), fantastic food, especially the 'pom', we made wonderful guided trips in the jungle, went to marron villages by boat and had swims in the river. It was a very well balanced program. We have never been stung by mosquitos and enjoyed the absence of the internet!!! We thank our guide Elton and all the friendly inhabitants on the island who made our stay such a pleasant and informative one. Highly recommended!

Overall an awesome trip. The hour flight followed by the 30 minutes boat ride was a good precursor to our 4 day stay. The guides and staff were outstanding as was the food. The opportunity to hike in the jungle, swim through rapids and float down the river was really a special occasion. The cabins, natural message and so much more made this a truly awesome and relaxing experience.

I really fell for this place.  It is such a tranquil and natural setting.  The cabins are quite basic but they are large, clean and comfortable.  we had a large double bed with netting although when we were there in October we never got bit - but others did.  Each cabin faces the river with a raised covered deck complete with chairs/table and two hammocks.  We spent a lot of time on that deck just gazing at the jungle, the birds, Maroon ladies and kids bathing in the river and dugout canoe river traffic.  There are rapids nearby which we enjoyed for a cooling dip.

Our English/Dutch speaking Maroon guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive to our needs.  We did boat trips (safe), jungle walks and Maroon village visits.  The food was basic but healthy and ample in quantity.  The lodge had a full (relatively) bar set in the main lodge which also had loads of hammocks and chairs for relaxing.  They also have a spa but we don't do spas.

There was only one other couple during our visit so that may have made our stay better and certainly more intimate.  They can get big groups which would change the whole experience.

I would highly recommend three to four days at Awarradam.

A Special Lodge on a Jungle River

Staying for four nights at Awarradam we didn't really enjoy our stay. 
Especially one incindent was very disturbing: We were visiting Peti island with our group and local guide. Everyone could go swimming and bathing. Suddenly other young men approached the island on boats and began to walk around, began to take there mobile phones (as if they were taking pictures), sat themselves close to the younger women of the group and even helped themselves at our (already finished) picnic lunch without any comment. The men got very close to some of the women (sitting very close!!) and stared at the female guests. This was emberrasing and seemd as a harassment. It seemed that our local guide knew the men (and was staring at the women, too) and didn't bother. As soon as our group went back to the lodge by boat, the men were also leaving. Looked like no coincidence!
We told our own guide this incidence and he wanted to talk to the local guide, but nothing happened afterwards. 
Thus we cannot recommend Awarradam lodge as long as this situation lasts. 
Our local guide didn't talk too much English and as we were a German speaking group, the communication was pretty difficult.
Unfortunately we were not suffincently informed during the jungle walks, it seemed as if the local guide was not very ambitious and even if he had knowledge about nature, he didn't show it.
There are a lot of people living on and around the Awarradam island. You can see them on boats, doing laundry in the river, fishing... As guests you are told not to take pictures of local people, thus taking pictures without people is not easy. Idyllic and jungle - as advertised - seems to be different in our opinion.

Harrassment of women without any consequences; more a hotel in/ surrounded by a village than a jungle lodge

If you like this place depend on your plan and what you want to do. It is located on 1 hr flying south of paramaribo on the river and offered in a 5 tour. It comes with a fixed program of activities like visiting local villages, bush walk, fishing etc. You can skip activities and jus hang around and swim in the river and read a book etc. Groups can be as big as 32 !!! So it has to be your thing to do everyting with a group. In my case we were 12. There like 10 basic cabins on the riverside with a veranda with hammocks. All but 2 canoes were not leaking. Friendly staff and a spa for massages. Food was great. Alltogether a bit touristy for my taste.
