15LMD Villa in Front of the Lagoon

Amazing house with long history in 150 years, all details in old colonial style. Good service, tasty local foods. Owner have a taxi, you can going to a station or to a coast. Good location on a lagoon, market in 5 minutes. Strongly recommended!

Caretakers provide exceptional hospitality and unrivaled service.  Home cooked food is food and plentiful.  Building is over 300 years old. - a unique experience that some travelers will relish. Only one room has a private bath and there is no AC - no problem for me but will be for others. 

Location provides easy access to many of Batti’s sights. View from the front porch is magical.

This is a chance to stay in an entirely authentic old Dutch colonial building overlooking the lagoon and the fort. It's a superb building- 4 airy bedrooms with mozzie nets and ceiling fans to keep things comfortable overnight. Centrepiece is a central hall with antique furnishings opening onto a veranda overlooking the lagoon. Only one bedroom has ensuite and there is no air con - fine for us. We were looked after by Ranjan and Malar- a lovely local couple who do great local food and keep the place spotless. 
LMD is quiet after dark- busy morning and evening but it is only 150 m from the bazaar and the centre. Very quiet overnight 
We recommend eat here and borrow a bike to explore the shores of the lagoon. Deserted beaches, fish eagles even a crocodile . Great place! 

Will we ever tire of sitting on the veranda here, taking in the fantastic view across the water to the fort and  Ghandi gardens. No !! It's worth coming just to take in the history of the building with it's array of Dutch colonial furniture.  We are always well looked after by Mallar and Ranjan and the food is just out of this world.

We have become very attached to the family who manage this place, Mallar, Ranjan, and their daughters.The scene from the front veranda across the lagoon to the fort is unbeatable. You are only a 5 minute walk from the town. 
The food is good and comes in large portions.
The rooms are the old stores from when this was a Dutch traders place centuries ago.

We stayed in Batti for one night whilst travelling from Ella to Trincomalee and we booked here based on reviews and the fact that it looked unique. The staff speak very little english but are helpful and did manage to book us a taxi when asked. The breakfast was very good and the rooms are basic but comfortable. As a note, if you're afraid of bugs and want perfect cleanliness, a tv, aircon and fast wifi, this isn't the place for you. 

The house itself is old and in fairly good condition considering the tsunami but its location is superb, sitting on the porch and overlooking the lagoon is great experience you don't get very often. We even borrowed the bikes and went for an explore of Batticaloa and the fort/old town. 

If you're in Batti for one or two days and want to try something different and unique, give it a go. We really enjoyed it!

We stayed at 15 LMD for 3 days and rented the room(s) with the private bath.The location can't be beat as it's right in town and the view of the Dutch Fort is priceless.   Less than 5 minute walk to the bustling vegetable and fish market.  Easy walking and/ or biking to town to see the churches, mosque and beach.   It's a charming home and the caretakers Ranjan and his wife Malar are lovely people.  Ranjan is a bit shy but very helpful and kind.  Malar has a better grasp of English and will help you as much as she can. Their adorable youngest daughter is learning English too.  Malar makes authentic east coast style Sri Lankan dishes that are really good.  I lived in Batticaloa for a few years and am pretty discerning when it comes to Sri Lankan food.  Malar's home cooking (hopper, egg hoppers, pittu, curries, sambol)  is simple and delicious.    For an extra treat, ask them if they could order Kottu Roti, a Batticaloa original dish (Kottu Roti from Sunshine Bakery is pretty popular or you can bike there).   Our room was large with a mosquito net.  The fans worked great but just an FYI that week we were there was unusually hot (104 F with the humidity factored in).  So  if heat is not your thing, be aware that there is no A/C.  Also, if you are tall, the entrance to the attached bath is low so watch your head.  We rented bicycles from them (Rs500 - we think it was their daughters bikes) and they were not in the best condition however there are other places that rent bikes as well.  Batticaloa is pretty flat so it's a great town to bike around.   They also do laundry (ask for pricing beforehand) and there is a tuk-tuk that you can hire with driver (Ranjan).   Tea/ Coffee is served on the veranda.   Great way to relax and enjoy the view. Also, excellent customer service from Thilanka, the manager in Colombo.   Would stay there again (especially when it's a bit cooler).

Another stop on what has become an annual pilgrimage to Sri lanka. 15 LMD offers a step back in time, the building dating back several centuries although having been renovated quite recently, but without destroying it's quirky antiquity. The food here is very good Sri Lankan traditional.Sited on the water front opposite the fort and the Gandhi Garden, the veranda is an ideal place to watch the sun  rise and set.
