The Hostel Matagalpa

Me and my partner spent 3 nights in this nice hostel and I really can recommend staying here. We had a spaceous room and the staff was very helpful. There's a nice common area and we really enjoyed spending our evenings here since even the staff sat around and we could connect to a lot of awesome people! The kitchen was very clean. We enjoyed every minute in this nice little cozy place. The location is very good, it's just a 5-minutes walk to the next supermarket and a 2-minutes walk from the bus terminal. Make sure to visit the waterfalls in Penas blancas nearby!

Stayed here for 2 nights after moving from another hostel but wish we had found it sooner. This little gem is less than 5 minute walk from the bus station surrounded by food shops, restaurants and cheap street food. There's also a fried chicken place directed opposite. 

We stayed in a private room as it was $1 more than 2 hostel beds and was one of the cheapest rooms we've had in Nicaragua. It was lovely, crisp soft white sheets, fluffy towels and comfortable beds. As cheap backpackers this felt like heaven! The room had a fan but wasn't needed. 

The bathroom was cleaned several times a day which was really nice especially for a hostel! Typical cold water shower but it wasn't freezing and nice big shower head with good water pressure. 

Clean well equipped kitchen. You could even choose to have a breakfast cooked for you. We made our own and no problems in the kitchen the staff even insisted on doing out washing up. We got free freshly made coffee with the beans ground on site. 

Out back there are a few hammocks and you can see the coffee beans drying. Attached is a tiny coffee shop where we were welcomed to watch the process and had a coffee tasting. In the dining room was a small book exchange and some board games. 

Loved this place would absolutely recommend!  

The Hostel is quite a new hostel in Matagalpa, with a few rooms, some dorm some private. We had the private room with private bathroom which was a nice spacious room.

The Hostel is located close to the main bus station for an easy arrival (but check for yourself because there are two bus stations). It's also conveniently close to he city center so you can easily walk to restaurants (check El Taquero, just one block from The Hostel, great asados, tacos and burritos).

The staff is friendly, although not all the most experienced, but willing and trying. There is free coffee, you better just ask for it if you want some. The older señor makes great coffee and did our laundry on request for a decent price.

At the back is a nice patio with seating, some plants and hammocks, a great place to relax.

Good value!

The Hostel Matagalpa is a typical backpackers hangout. Nothing fancy, basic kitchen, pretty thin mattresses. But what makes the place is the welcome, Melvin on reception was extremely helpful and cheerful. Made us coffee in the morning plus gave us plenty of good advice. Don't expect too much for your $7 and you won't be disappointed. Just 3 blocks from the bus terminal, and from the hostel only a short walk into the centre.

Wonderful place to stay!

Loved this hostel! Clean and great location 

We stayed for 3 nights because it seemed a good budget option for us and one of the few places in Matagalpa which had a kitchen. 

Good to know:
-There is a kitchen which can be used without issues. It's small though but manageable. The equipment is slightly dated. 
-The outside space is nicely decorated with hammocks, lights and plants and they are continuously working on it.  
-There is one shared bathroom (cold shower + toilet + sink - really nice one) plus one outside toilet for the 6 bed dorm and 2 double rooms (10 ppl) which will lead to some queuing in the mornings/evenings
-The rooms are spacious, only downside is that the mattresses are quite slim which we felt in our bodies after 3 nights. It would be more convenient to stay in a room which is not facing the road as Matagalpa is surprisingly noisy with traffic 
-The hostel is close to the bus station and a fruit & veggie market which is great. There is also a coffee place directly next to it/around the corner which is worth checking out. You can taste lots of different coffees there which was a good tour alternative for us (in conjunction with the free coffee museum in town). 
-It's about 5-10 minutes walking distance to central park and the main town area from the hostel.
