HOSTAL Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia is an amazing place and exactly as a hostel should be. Full of character, charm, warmth and comfort. It has the perfect mixture of a chilled and fun atmosphere in a beautiful colonial building. As Mathieu said "It is not a factory hostel"!
Santa Lucia would be nothing without Lizzie. She is the heart, soul and love within it. A super cool, cute and friendly girl. I will miss it and her!

I decided to stay at Hostal Santa Luciawith some friends because I had heard excellent things about the Hostal whilst travelling. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. The location of the Hostal is perfect: bang in the centre of Merida, about a 2 minute walk (probably less) to the main Plaza. It is on the same road as some of the best bars and restaurants in town: the Maya pub, The Beer House and the Chaya Maya to name just a few. All of which are great value. It is about 20 pesos cheaper than the Nomads hostel around the corner which again was a draw and from what I saw has much more character. There was good wifi, which worked well in the dorm. The dorm room was spacious and with well built lockers (in contrast to other places I had stayed at), and a really nice communal area with a terrace, where you can mingle and get to meet fellow backpackers and also a television room. It also has a good kitchen which I found to be well equipped with pans, oil and all the stuff you need to cook a decent meal, and also free drinking water.

We planned on staying just a few days in Merida but we ended up staying a week. I found the staff at the Hostal to be extremely welcoming and helpful. I wasn't really sure what there was to do here. But they gave me a map and information and took the time to explain where to go and the best sites to visit and places to eat and drink, which was greatly appreciated. Following their recommendations and help, I went on day trips to Uxmal and the cenotes at Cuzama which were just excellent!

In short, I would strongly recommend the Hostal!

The place is good to sleep, has hot and cold water, breakfast, good price about 280 pesos for a private room for 2. If you plan on just getting there to sleep is great if you want to chill there there's not a lot to do, in conclusion it is fine.

What a place, what a girl

Perfect place to stay for the discerning backpacker

It does its job

I dont know when all the people leaving great comments here were in Santa Lucia (which period) but we were in september. And it was awful. All the linen we'd got were dirty. Breakfast was said to be included, but the next morning was no breakfast, nowhere. When we went to the kitchen to see, there was a trace that someone cut fruits and left the remains there, and all the insects were gathering over them. The only person beside us,was the worker at Santa Lucia, and he was hell lazy. Took him ages to open us the front door always. And even when in the room, i've seen him look through the window. Terrible. From the roof pieces of painting falling down. The dorm beds were very dirty - all. I would say, Hostel Santa Lucia in Mérida, ran away as far as you can. Later on i saw you have a hostel exactly at Zocalo. Try out that one better.

The location is great, staff is really friendly and will prepare a nice breakfast but dorms and bathroom needs lots of maintenance, not hot water available and general cleanliness specially in dorms us needed.
