Best hotel I’ve been in my trip. Beautiful rooms. Only one downside but really small, is that the laundry room closes at 9 and I was not told of it therefore I could not do my laundry but is just a small thing that it doesn’t matter. The hotel was absolutely exceptional, loved it I will go back in a heart beat,

Centrally located, would request some onsite options for those arriving late such as vending machines etc.

We had a wonderful stay at The Machiya Takayama hotel. Location is convenient to go to the main attractions and restaurants. Thank you for the room upgrade. Loved the room, the decor and little garden. The staff are friendly and helpful in recommending dining options. Will be back for sure!

Absolute perfection for our family of 4, e en better than the pics! There is a grocery store around the corner and an adorable kitchen with everything you need to make a light meal. The huge bathtub will soothe your.soul. The master bed is quite comfy. Great temperature control. Immaculate! One of the best places I've ever stayed. Tip: Use Hato Taxi to get around. We changed our itinerary so we could stay here. I just had a feeling about this place and I was right. We loved it. You can not fault the service you receive - the manager and assistant manager were so lovely, gracious, accommodating, helpful, and eager to please. This hotel felt immediately inviting and relaxed.

The best feature of this hotel, and most thoughtful, is the guest lounge, an area where breakfast will be served, but also where you can sit and talk to other travellers, play games, read books, make an espresso coffee, help yourself to an extensive range of teas, or fill your water bottle. There are guide books left for you to browse, and a library where you can pick up a book left by other guests and leave the one you've finished (that's what I did; you'll find it near the toasting oven).

Espresso coffee is made to order every morning by the manager, so we ended up buying pastries for breakfast (at a nearby bakery the night before) and heating them ourselves in the toasting oven. Perfect! It's just what we wanted for breakfast. We also bought food from a supermarket one day and heated it up in the lounge's microwave. (Be warned: a lot of restaurants are closed on Tues & Wed nights.)

The window in our room opened, so we could have fresh air and there was a couch we could put our suitcases on to keep things off the floor.

They have two private onsens which need to be booked and cost ¥1,000 pp/per hour (they are big enough for 2 people). Unfortunately, when I went to use them they were both cold. A previous guest did not understand Japanese bathing etiquette and had left the cold water tap running! Possibly a bit of education required when booking.

It was a modern style but had some traditional feeling while we were there. The jazz music in the community room was very soothing. The staff were very helpful and work very hard for the customer. We appreciate the work they put into the service.

The villa was amazing.  The onsen bath was devine. My only criticisms is there is no couch. So when you come back after a big day out there is no where to relax besides the kitchen table. Other than that, this place is the best. Amazing location,  plenty of space and comfortable beds.

Beautiful warm property overlooking the running river. Highly recommend.

The Machiya Hotel was one of our favorite places to stay during our trip. We appreciated the kindness of the staff and the homey feel of the common areas. The rooms here modern, well designed and had everything we needed. It was so nice to be able to quietly sip tea and the provided sweets after a long day of exploring. Room was surprisingly spacious and pretty. Convenient - walking distance to Takayama station and Nohi Bus and to touristy spots too. Loved our stay
