There's not a whole lot I can say that's positive about this place, other than it's cheap and in a good location (8 minutes walking to Beppu station).The building is quite old and hasn't been renovated since it was built.  The word that comes to mind is 'dilapidated'.  The carpet is dingy, there are stains on the wall, and the walls are paper thin.  Even though I opted for a private room, I could still hear everything in the communal bathroom and hallway.I will say the tatami in the room was on the newer side, and the linens were quite clean.  Also free rental bikes are provided which is a huge plus.Overall, my standards were not high given the price but even then I was a little surprised by the state of the property.  I've stayed in other similarly priced hotels/hostels that were in much better shape.Also of note: this place does not provide you with a bath towel.  You have to pay 50 yen per towel.  I don't know why but it irks me when places do this.  Just add it to the price of the room and give me a free bath towel lol.  How are the bike rentals free but the bath towel is not???

Nice and friendly staff, fluent in English. Bit worn out facilities, but reflected in room price that was good value. We enjoyed the hotels own onsen. One funny thing was a small cork gun shooting range! Never seen that before. Not exactly high tech and we loved it. Nice and clean traditional style rooms. Our impression was that sound did not carry well through the walls, which is good, of course. Short walk from central Beppu with lots of shops and restaurant and JR station with buses taking you to local sightseeing spots. We did not use the kitchen facilities, but they existed.

In Japan I love older hotels with tatami bedrooms, and this one was perfect. Shoji screen doors slid out on 2 sides to reveal broad windows with views of the mountains. If you like traditional interiors and don't need a trendy, polished atmosphere, I highly recommend this place. Another bonus - it's a few blocks away from the Kitahama bus terminal, great for taking inter-city highway buses

Stayed for a night not at the dormitory but a private Japanese style room. Room was very spacious and the only down point was that it was mid winter in January but the room was still rather cold even with the heater. The heater was only in the main room and the toilet/shower area was freaking cold. They do not have a bath tub, but a shower and toilet in the same space with only a shower curtain separating the shower stand and the other part of the toilet. Whole area can get very wet after a shower.. 
Parking isnt free, and you have to book in advance. 
There is a living room and onsen on the first floor but it was too cold and i was too lazy as our room was on the 3rd floor. 
Guy at reception was very friendly and helpful. Location is a plus, just a few minutes walk from the station and if you need food, there are a few eateries around that open late. They also have rental bicycles.

Cost and location

For us it couldn't be better. An onsen, a comfortable living room, a great Japanese style room, great host just overall a wonderful experience. Location is close to all the restaurants. Bike rental was perfect to visit the hot springs.

Good location, hostel in urgent need of major renovation, more and better instruction to guests so that they can take better care of facilities. Overall, we adapted to the place, which is peaceful and quiet.

Good location

BAD! There has a gap between the window and the wall, wind can go straight through that gap into the room, and an airflow hit the paper window rack and the door, it made too noisy and very cold, i cant sleep all the night.

The main check-in counter was in the separate building from the accommodation (this was a little odd). The kitchen wasn't very tidy. The onsen was very soothing and nice. The room was small but included a washroom and a sink, so that was convenient.

Not too bad.

hard to find the reception when you arrive late, no bathroom  just have hot spring room。no soundproof, always noisy outside
