Oscar's Hostel

I had 1 night to waste before my flight back to London. Oscar’s was perfect for me as it’s near Kent train station on Glanmire Road so I got the train from Midleton.

Friendly checkin and electronic key to come and go as you please. Communal kitchen and rest rooms with pool table.

6 sturdy metal bunks in my room with a metal cage underneath for secure storage.
Can’t go wrong for €25. A gem in otherwise expensive hotel rooms in Cork
Check out ‘Lab 82’ down the road for delicious burgers, pancakes, coffees 

This is really great place to stay staff very sound people room in great condition only few minutes walk from city centre location of hostel is perfect.

Very near train station if anyone ever needed to get an early train do Little Island our Dublin.

I only wish I had read the reviews on here before. Upon arrival we waited for the manager to find our booking for good 10 minutes. We booked online and he was searching in a notebook with no record of us booking. I tried to  explain to him but unfortunately the manager somehow doesn’t speak English!? 
The room was decent sized except for the bathroom - if you wanted to sit on the toilet you had to do it from the side as the sink was in the way.
To top if off, mould everywhere and dirty carpets. Ew!

Dirty

I stayed for one night at oscars after a last minute change of plans and did I regret it. I frequently use hostels but Oscar's was at the lower end without a doubt. First I rang the bell and the telephone numbers but had to wait 15 minutes to get in. The girl was really friendly and told me that the door to my single occupancy room sticks- every time I had to tackle the door which was severely bowed not a "bit sticky". This made me a bit worried as I was never sure if the door was ever closed properly after me (as well as doing my shoulder in). 

One of the worst parts is that I don't think they are properly cleaning the rooms with coronavirus in mind as there were no sanitizing stickers that I've seen in other hostels before and after. The shower must also have just been used (the air was still warm, the mat wet and water in the bottom of the shower). The worst was that there was blood on the sheets that looked  fresh- maybe a wash or two at best. So I slept in my sleeping bag trying not to touch anything.

I could write an essay an how bad this place was. Instead I'll list the rest of the bad stuff:
1) the floor was sticky
2) the room smelled
3) the blinds were broken so I had to manually roll it up touching all the mould in the window corners in the process

I probably should have left as soon as I saw the room but I was in a place last minute in a city I wasn't supposed to be in. I then stayed in a great hostel elsewhere but it really showed what a dive Oscar's is. I bet they don't care about cleaning normally let alone with a pandemic going on!!

Dirty, unsanitary and (probably) no coronavirus cleaning

Terrible experience arrived early evening last Saturday 22/08/20 after a days sight seeing in Cork to be told they made a mistake and we were homeless for night 400 odd miles from home in Belfast . Disgraceful treatment - no sympathy and cold. I wouldn’t advise this joke of hostel to anyone. We had to cut out holiday short and drive late into night home to Belfast - absolutely disgusted by whole experience . Also no covid precautions whatsoever no social distancing signs or adherence and no sign of hand sanitizer in my brief time to be told they had no room after all . Very dodgy location as well - I would strongly advise to avoid .

Nightmare experience- do not stay here

Stayed here with my friend for one night. We arrived at 6.30. Went to check into our room. Cheap accommodation but you are getting what u paid for. As we left to go out we discovered that our room did not lock. We went down stairs to go to reception and the man working there had told us that he knew that it doesn’t lock. We payed for a private room and it wasn’t private. He expected us to leave our Belongings in a room that doesn’t lock. He never told us this when we checked in. He pretended that he couldn’t understand us. We eventually moved rooms but we shouldn’t have ever got a room that doesn’t lock in the first place. The man was very rude and unhelpful. Wouldn’t stay again. Plus the floors were sticky

Shocking staff shocking place

So we visited oscars on Friday evening after a mix up with some previous acomodaition we booked this last minute on hostel world. It was €97 for both of us for the night. We arrived and drove around aimlessly for parking which was supposed to be provided for about 10 minutes before calling the hostel to ask for help. A man with very poor English answered and told us to park on the street somewhere.
We then arrived into the hostel to be greeted by Julian who seamed very confused and said that there was no space and we did not have a booking. He then checked to discover that they had in fact double booked the room. Usually in this situation I would be upset. But upon smelling and seeing the place I was delighted we would not be staying there we would not have felt safe. There was mysterious men in the hallway and a smell of dirty cats through the building. It smelled like it hadn't been cleaned since 2000. 
We spoke with Julian about the posability of a refund on the acomodaition for about 10-15 minutes via Google translate on his phone before leaving as he insisted refunds in this case were not his responsibility. During this Google translate conversation he appeared to be very nervous and was clicking in and out of things on the PC including having other customers full card details viable to me on the screen for long enough to record them if I was so inclined.
We went to the maldron in the end, it was worth the extra money to feel safe. That smell will stay with me for a few years.

Our 10 minute visit

When we arrived we went to check in and the woman checking us in had very poor English it took her ages to find our booking in her book and couldn’t understand my friend when my friend was trying to tell her that her name was Niamh a very common name in Ireland but even when my friend spelled it out she still didn’t understand so checking in took a long time. The room itself was very cramped for six people and ventilation was very poor. The toilet in our room wouldn’t flush and when we tried to tell the woman what was wrong she didn’t understand us and then just said to use the bathroom downstairs which was a huge inconvenience. The shower wouldn’t work either. The walls were paper thin and you could hear everything in the building. There was mould covering the very old windows and one of them wouldn’t even close. The place didn’t feel secure anyone could just walk into any of the rooms and apart from check in there was no staff to be seen throughout the entire time we were there. The entire place just felt weird and there’s no other way to describe it.

Worst place I’ve ever stayed

My friends and I were visiting cork for 2 nights this week. This was the cheapest place we could find that ended up costing us €200 for the 2 nights and I can strongly say it wasn’t worth it. 
The outside of the hostel is very run down looking. As we tried to check in we were greeted by a lovely man who did everything he could to help us but didn’t have a word of English! No fault of his own, he was great and even carried our luggage to the room but we really felt he should’ve been accompanied by someone with English so they could help us with any questions we had. There was nobody around for the duration of our stay, not even at check out. The room appeared to be unclean with a filthy mat in the bathroom and dirt on the windowsill, floor and shower. The room was also extremely small for 3 people. Overall not worth the money and an extremely disappointing experience. 

Shocking 

Never in my life have I ever experienced such shocking hospitality in a hostel it really upsetted me and my partner  and I have visited alot of great hostels which this is shockly  brutal the room I had booked was an unsuite room for 2 people my partner and I were ment to stay in a double bed room but got a bunk bed instead ... The bathrooms were shocking  mold growing on the walls toilet was blocked I asked the manager if he could help us as we were not happy with the service and he got very rude and acted in a unprofessional manner  with us and a few others  and was very abrubt about our complaint and was on denial about the room been in a mess so we decided to leave and we asked for our money back and they didn't give it back to us but we had rights and he rudely handed back the money and we happily left so we will never ever return to such an appoling place ever again. Highly advise to avoid   wasn't impressed and never in my life have i ever had to ask for my money back in any places I had stayed in
