My wife and I stayed at the Pululahua Ecolodge for two nights, it was the first stop on our trip through Ecuador. 

The crater itself was incredible. We hiked around the village and explored the trails within the crater for some incredible views. Depending on the time of day, the clouds and fog would change the scenery so dramatically that we did the same hike twice and got completely different views. The key is to explore early before the clouds roll in, which seems to happen in the afternoon consistently.

The lodge is in a beautiful location, right in the middle of Pululahua Crater. The accommodations are relatively simple, clean, comfortable and everything worked (lights, toilet etc.). It fits right in with the surrounding farms and village, so you feel like you’re actually staying with the locals, which you are. We ate every meal in their restaurant, and the food was great. Everything was fresh from the garden and prepared in the kitchen by the extremely friendly family that owns the lodge. 

Pululahua Ecolodge offers everything from horseback riding to mountain biking to guided hikes. We did everything on our own, but I would strongly suggest booking activities with them. Considering how great a job they did with everything else, I’m sure it would be worth it.

Finally, I was surprised at how affordable a place like this could be. We put everything on a tab and payed at the end. I thought it was a mistake at first, considering how much you would pay for an experience like this in some other countries. Definitely give this place a try, stay for a few nights and enjoy a really unique place. I just wish we had stayed a night or two more!

Pululahua Ecolodge-A Unique Experience

We enjoyed our stay here very much. Renato and Paola took great care of us during a difficult time. And their young daughter was a lot of fun!
We enjoyed walking and exploring the crater, seeing the birds and flowers,  and the interesting geology of the crater. It was also just a lovely place to relax and enjoy the countryside.
We also liked the delicious home-cooked food. We recommend the heated cabanas, even if you don't use the fire, they are worth it for the wonderful views.

Beautiful hidden sanctuary.

The crater is like descending into another world and the lodge is a great place to stay. Several options to suit anyone's budget. We opted for a room. It was clean with a warm comfortable bed. The bathroom along the hall was also clean with plenty of hot water. Fresh towels, shower mat and loo roll provided. We ate in the dining room, very good 3 course meal. There is a hot tub outside which you can book for an extra $3.50 p.p, it takes 2 to 3 hours to heat up. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Renato speaks english and will advise you on walks and other interesting places to visit.
Plenty of walks about, it's very quiet and good for birdwatching which is what we came to do. There is a hummingbird and tanager feeder in the garden, great place to sit and enjoy a cold beer.

The Lost Valley

We walked from the viewpoint down the crater, which took about 30 minutes and gives you a really nice view of the crater.
The Pululahua Ecolodge was a wonderful hostel. Very friendly staff, great food and particularly all natural and faithful.
Do a horse riding trip through the crater - it is a great way to explore big parts in short time and is a lot of fun! 

Really special

I slept in a crater, so much comfortable! Pululahua it’s a incredible natural place, so peaceful, but also powerful!
To arrive you have to take a dirt road, better with a big car, but not impossible with a small one, althought worth it because the incredible view. 
In the place you can try trekking, horse riding or biking. I took the bicycle, and spent all my day around the nature, in the evening I returned to the hostal, tried the jacuzzi, ate a yummy dinner, and slept near to the chimney at my room, then I woke up with this amazing view of the Ecuadorian Andes (photo)

Really I want to keep this experience to me. But Paola the owner, was very friendly and helpful, and we are lucky because she wants to share this secret grove to everyone who loves nature, for this reason you have to visit Pululahua hostal, you won’t regret!

Forget the mitad del mundo, if you really want to experience the magic of being at the center of the earth then you need to get to the Puluahua Hostal nestled right in the volcanic crater. 
We have been regulars here now for years and will be for years to come.
Friendly staff, great service, super food and magical setting.

Best weekend out of Quito

You have to want to go here! You don't happen upon Pululahua by accident, or in passing, I think the rough dirt road is 13 Km long, but I would have guessed 30! But once you're there, just settle into your room (one of the two private rooms is my suggestion, but I think hostel-accomodations are also offered, as is camping). Choose something from the surprisingly diverse menu (reasonable prices). Explore this volcanic "geobotanical reserve" for its fascinating geology and diverse wildlife. Arrange a birding tour with the proprietor (Renato). Sit in the garden amid humminbirds and tanagers, Be charmed by Renato's precocious daughter Renata (four years of age in 2019).

Hot water direct from the bath's plumbing, not through the electric attachments so ubiquitous within Latin America. Cool nights, mild days.

The rooms aren't four-star by conventional travel indiustry standards, but the surroundings and the people add very real value.
