I was traveling alone and for the first time in China, plus it was dark upon my arrival so it was little unnerving to arrive in Gubeikou town at night. (no lights, no stores, and few neighbors) But the host and driver were great, the room was simple- clean bed, has a shower/toilet all-in-one type of situation, but it does the job! You can request your meals throughout the day and they will cook for you. Breakfast was 20Y, and the rates went up from there for lunch/dinner. Best part is you do not need any transport from this location to reach the Great Wall. Take a 25-30 minute hike through the trees and reach the Great Wall. Walk about 5 hours towards Jinshanling and finish there! (From Jinshanling you will need transport back home!) Great experience for a solo traveler.
