Very good
82 reviewsI'e stayed in this hotel half a dozen times in the past 2+ years. It's a Super 8, you get what you can for. First, the location. Depending on what you're in Chengdu to do, it could be a good location or slightly inconvenient. It's in the southern part of the city, a mere 20-minute ride from the airport (in light traffic). The hotel resides on the 5th-7th floors of the front (east, I believe) wing of the SOHO apartment/office/miscellaneous complex. Within the complex are several hair salons, restaurants, two Wowo 24-hour convenience stores, and a Watsons (HBA). Right outside to the south sits Hooters, which anchors a newly-renovated office/shopping complex. Around the corner is a Trust-mart supermarket, a 24-hour Macdonalds, and a lot of small shops. Across the street is an English pub, a jazz bar, several restaurants and cafes (I recommend Good Wood, one of the better cafe chains). Across the street and a block north is Sichuan University. About a 15-minute walk away, just beyond the univesity, is the electronics mart, where you can get anything from SD cards to high-end cameras and computers. The American Consulate is a couple of blocks away. Transportation. Airport to hotel via taxi is about 45rmb ($6-7 USD). Getting a cab to the city center could be tricky at times; I've waited anywhere from 5-35 minutes for a cab. To People's Square is only about 10rmb in light to moderate traffic, but if you're in heavy traffic, which is likely during rush hour, it could take over half an hour (and of course will cost more). There is bus stop right outside the complex. Rooms. Small but not cramped. Good windows and a large ledge (more like a platform) in some rooms. Slight danky smell sometimes. Small workdesk, free internet. Some rooms face the main street (KeHua Beilu) and some face apartments. Small bathrooms, some with enclosed showers (no tub), some with old Chinese-style showers where the water runs all over the bathroom floor until it eventually disappears into the drain. Bathroom amenities = soap and toothbrush. There is a water heater to make coffe and tea but no complimentary water or coffee. Air conditioner works fine. Room fairly bright, hallway fairly dark. This could get creepy at night but from experience it's safe. Service. None. They check you in, check you out. That's about it. Overall, it's a good value for under $30 a night. Caveat: During one of my stays there was no hot water in the morning. I asked the housekeeper outside my door about it and she said it would be back on momentarily. After over an hour and still no hot water, I asked the front desk about it. They said it was a city issue and that it would be back on within a couple of hours. The staff was (surprisingly) appropriately apologetic, which defused my frustration. I went out and came back a few hours later and the problem was resolved. This only happened once, but still... Tip: The Super 8 has standard and business rooms, I believe. I tried out the biz room and it was roughly the same size as the standard, but with a small sofa and an equally small coffee table. Just stick with the standard. Enjoy Chengdu!
