St Stephen Inn

St. Stephen Inn was reasonably priced. The front desk lady was friendly and down-to-earth upon check-in and the room was clean. The motel is also within walking distance of restaurants in downtown St. Stephen and other nearby amenities. Wifi in the room worked well and I had no concerns whatsoever while staying here.

This place was well within my budget as a young solo traveller on a no-frills weekend getaway, and I would recommend staying here if you’re on a budget and/or not looking to spend much on accommodations. It’s definitely dated and could use some TLC, but you get what you pay for (or can afford) and $75 a night plus tax for a double bed definitely made sense. Not to mention it was a bargain for this area at the tail end of tourism season. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

BAD reviews or bad REVIEWERS?? We'll Go Back!

Our grandson had a hockey tournament in early January in St. Stephen, NB – about 90 minutes from where we live so, not knowing for sure we would be attending (weather, possible other family plans, etc), we made a refundable (ie. until the day before) internet reservation a couple of months ago to stay at the St. Stephen Inn (cheapest AND closest to one of the rinks being used). Since it was a couple of months out and we might not even be going, I didn't give much though until closer to the date. There are only a few motels in St. Stephen (and a few much more pricey in the nearby resort town of St. Andrews and a couple just across the US border in Calais, Maine.

When I finally checked reviews in mid-December, I was concerned about some reviewers comments (ie. mold and urine smells including in the small lobby/check in area, large spiders in the bathroom, the owner yelling at a guest during check in, not refunding a guest's money who chose not to stay, dirty rooms etc). Now if you read many of our previous hotel and resort reviews, one thing you will note is that many had some poor reviews yet, we found them very much to our liking and would return. And while there are, at times, legitimate concerns, frequently a bad review makes no allowance for price and arrives with the expectation a cheaper room in an older facility should be as good or better than paying more at a newer place. And, it may be that some rooms at the same hotel are better than others so the review (like this one) reflects one room (good or bad) vs the establishment as a whole. And there are fewer rooms used here in the winter than summer so we have a more limited experience of the St. Stephen Inn than some of the other reviewers. 

Because of some of the reviews, I did what I've done before with other establishments – call directly, state exactly what we were looking for and specifically raise some of the more concerning parts of other reviews. In mid-December, I spoke to John (owner/manager?) and a couple of weeks later when it looked like we would be going to watch our grandson play his 3 day tournament, I called again and spoke to someone else (Celinda?) and asked the same questions and received a similar response. Both John and Celinda assured me we could cancel our internet booking with cancellation up to the day before we would have checked in (so we would have paid in advance without checking the property), show up on Friday, check out some rooms and, if we didn't like a room, we did not have to stay and there would be NO CHARGE! And that's exactly what we did. Worse case scenario – we live 90 minutes from St Stephen so if we didn't find a room we liked there and couldn't find a reasonably priced close satisfactory alternative, we could drive home.

John showed us two different downstairs rooms in the main building. For us, both were fine. They didn't smell (and neither did the lobby area where I was several times) as some reviewers said. There were no spiders (okay, this was January), the rooms were clean AND, John said we did not have to decide on the second night until the next morning so we would have a full night to see if anything “unpleasant” turned up. Well, we stayed both nights and our total rate for two nights was either just a bit higher or roughly the same as any of the other options FOR JUST 1 NIGHT within 30 minutes drive. Yes, the hotel is old (50+ years), yes the flooring and furnishings (except tv was LED flat screen but cable was just SD)  are dated, the plumbing isn't quiet (like the $200/night places) and the door to the outside made noise closing. But for what we paid, we got a warm room, comfortable/clean bed, running hot and cold water, fridge to keep beverages cold, good, safe and clean room. Biggest complaints – thin pillows and, being an older hotel, you can hear doors closing and other noises at times. 

I probably was at the small, check in area 6 times (NO odours as some claimed) and had several conversations with John. VERY HELPFUL!! Wanted our business but understood older hotels aren't for everyone. ( Perhaps some of the extra rooms used in peak season do have problems – we didn't see them). When he became animated (not angry, animated making a point like breakfast suggestions), his voice (like mine in similar circumstances) went up a notch but anyone who confused that with yelling has a very low yelling threshold.

Look, if you want a higher standard, you will pay for it. We stayed two nights and got our money's worth. We saw no health, safety or cleanliness issues. It's old and can use some attention but it is not a bad place to stay if you're not unduly fussy or arrive with expectations that far exceed the price you are paying. We can only speak of the rooms we saw but ground floor, main building worked for us.

BAD reviews or bad REVIEWERS?? We'll Go Back!

So I did stay here before and I gave this place a pretty negative review, after a few years I came back for a trip to work and It doesn't look like much has changed. 

HOWEVER thats not what I'm here to talk about as the Inn is starting to do some renovations and upgrades to the restaurant so maybe the upgrades will filter into the Inn itself. 

Its not a very bad place, It looks bad but the rooms are decent and you are near the New Brunswick Maine Border and you are close to many stores. 

Honestly I hope this place gets some TLC as it really could use it.

Ok so I admit it.. I was scared when I got to the room, first of all it was behind a glass door, I had asked for non smoking and was alarmed because where my room was there were ashtrays in front of every out side door. It was late because I got lost and it was the middle of the night when I arrived, much to the horror of the owner- who let me know that only because I booked through expedia they couldn't give my room away, or else they do if you miss check in by 10 pm. The room smelled old, and musty.. its run down and there were two giant spiders in the shower, I slept with the lights on but was glad to be out of the car and able to sleep. So the room location was weird, yet I didn't smell smoke, I do question putting a no smoking room in a block of rooms that are all smoking and making someone walk through that- so I am relieved I got their late and didn't deal with smokers outside. I can say this, the owner was nice to me the next day when I had to get to the cemetery, she helped me find the location and wished me well. This place is a fright show and really doesn't smell nice, and its old as anything, I slept with the lights on, so if you think you want something kinda nice, this is not it. I noticed what appeared to be a lot of trucks in the parking lot, maybe this kinda is ok if you don't mind the atmosphere, and the spiders?  The good thing is that its located right near the border and its on a main street in town and close to the loblaws and the Irving gas station and some food and close to the actual downtown strip.

I do not recommend. Very old room that needs renovation. The AC wasn't working, we had no hot water, the sign says that kids sleep for free but we were charge extra for "more than 2 persons", the hi speed internet was slower than you can imagine, we booked a family room for more privacy and the door wasn't closing properly, we were missing towel and face cloth and the lady at the front desk was not that helpful. One of the worst place I stayed. 

I do not recommend 

We were doing some cross-border shopping and got stuck in the area due to weather. The rooms are very outdated, and the furniture, bedding, and carpet were a bit shabby, but the room was clean and cheap. 

Emergency Stay

 front desk area smelled of mold and mildew, ( strong enough to make me sick), we didn't stay here, the smell was very strong, if front desk area smelled that bad I can only imagine what the rooms smelled like...
