We have returned several years in a row to this hotel for our Christmas break.  The owners are beautiful people & really go out of their way for us. It's the perfect location, 2 min walk to little beach & the same to shoal bay beach.  The rooms are great for the price & have all you need for an affordable short break. Cooking facilities, little shaded balconies& comfy beds. 

Let me preface this with saying that I find accommodation in non-metropoloitan Australia ridiculously over-priced. For some bizarre reason 2-3 star accommodation in Nelson Bay (and similar places) will set you back the same amount a 4-5 star hotel would in Sydney or Melbourne. Where's the sense in that? But, once you get over this, the Zulu is a worthwhile experience. Yes, it is fairly basic, yes, it should cost half of what it does, but you are on a houseboat in Nelson Bay marina and can watch the world float by (including the odd dolphin!). And, of course, you are a stone's throw away from eateries and shops etc. (In fact, if you are coming to NB for the dolphin swim, this is a great choice, as you are literally on the same pier as the Imagine.) Plus, you get free parking in the town centre, which I believe can be quite an issue. Check-out time is 10.05am with a fee of 45 dollars for every hour overstayed, and there is a threat of a fine for not washing dishes, which is all a little ugly, but we loved gently floating off to sleep on our little houseboat.

Lovely simple accommodation in perfect location

Zulu: a room with a difference

Stayed here for a few nights but weren't overly impressed. I know It is cheap accommodation, but even so. Little things, squeecky fans unbearable while sleeping, loud aircon, Advertised wifi only works in some rooms of the resort. The floors were dirty Enough that after getting out of shower my feet were black again in 5min. Heavy fines if late check out. Lights didn't work properly.

The only really good thing here was they allowed me to upgrade my room to same discounted cost that wotif advertised. (I swear wotif said motel room had access to a washing machine in the facility somewhere. It didn't. We needed to upgrade to a serviced apartment to get a washing machine. Fair enough. But in 3 days we never got the room serviced? ) 

Swimming pool, although is next to the not so private balcony of. 'Non' serviced apartment (advertised as private balcony) had a sign stating is for 'motel guests only! " what about non serviced apartment guests?
 
And if you look on their website that claim a golf course. Nelsons bay has one. They don't. 

Pros: was close to fly point for snorkelling (20min walk). Cheap for area. All the basics.

Cons: besides mentioned above, not close to shops. Reception not often manned.

Conclusion: this place is cheap. Don't expect much. It did have the basics which is good but they need to give the place, and service, a makeover. If your in the area and not going to be spending much time in the room then it might be for you. 

Circumstances had us stay in the area for a week longer than expected. We booked elsewhere. 


Cheap.. But average

Stayed for 2 nights was ok but nothing to rave about. Uncomfortable bed. Whole villa needed a good clean, floors were very dirty. Outside was untidy spiders and spiderwebs on the staircase. Could not use the spa as we are unable to get to the switches. Great location close to water.

Horrible service.... the lady at the desk was very very rude and disrespectful. The manager was the same, he threatened to kick us out for asking how much it cost to add an extra person. That is literally the only reason. The lady also wanted to call the police.. to which we said "yes, please" due to our total confusion at why we were being treated as such. The man also swore in front of a 3 and 8 year old. The lady kept repeating, "I don't get paid enough for this"... I think I then understood the reasons for her tantrum. The repeatedly called us liars without any basis. I have never been treated like this. My family is honest and 100% respectful. This was shocking to say the least. We left and took our money, our relatives from overseas were shocked at the treatment. I felt quite sad at how the man was talking to my mother and appalled at how he took the lady's side without even asking what had happened. And all because we asked, "How much extra is it if we add another person?" We used to stay here all the time. Now it's safe to say, never again. Ever.
