YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor

We three stayed in a room in the lodge up the hill. The room and ensuite bathroom were clean and the downstairs lounge and kitchen were comfortable and welcoming too. We chose not to use the kitchen facilities as the prepared meals were great! The staff were very friendly and helpful and made time for all our queries.

We had a fantastic Family Activity Holiday at YHA Okehampton Bracken Tor. A lovely location with really comfortable accomodation and overall great value for money. The staff were all so friendly and helpful, even helping with questions or communications when it might not have been their primary role. The chefs were super helpful in making sure we enjoyed every meal and had more than enough calories to see us through all the activities that are packed in, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner were all spot on! The instructors, we had Jackie, Ian, Alex and Charlotte, were all really experienced and tailored all the activities to our level and ability as well as making sure we had the right clothing and equipment. We took part in a night walk around the moors, rock climbing, gorge scrambling, hiking, weaseling, canoeing, kayaking, raft building and bike riding, I would really recommend the YHA Family Activity holidays, a great adventure experience with the chance to take in some amazing scenery.

On a solo trip from France across South Uk and Dartmoor. The Bracken Tor Lodge YHA is an excellent place to stay for its location. Very kind & helpful staff (thanks Pauline !). Very clean and practical. Loved it here...

The staff were super friendly, the meals were amazing and the rooms were really comfy. Went there as part of an activity course and it was amazing, 12/10 would recommend to anyone who is looking for a great time!

went for a three course meal at Bracken Tor for out local cycling club .There were a lovely selection of starter main and Desert.I had thr courgettes and Hallomi croquettes they were delicious came with a salad as well,and they were homemade very impressed then had poached salmon fillet cooked to perfection and followed by caramel sticky toffee a Pudding which was also homemade and absolutely yummy we also had coffee.The room we had the venue you in was wonderful we had a band playing it was a great fun evening with a lot of laughs also had a bar there too highly recommended wonderful meal Lovely staff Must say food fantastic well done to Wendy it was delicious

What an amazing venue for our wedding! Married under the arbour, with a reception in the beautiful function room which family and friends joined us to decorate the day before. Sarah served a fantastic 3 course meal for 100 people plus a buffet for more in the evening. The weather was perfect, the band was amazing, the staff were helpful and we could not have asked for more beautiful surroundings. Thanks to Paul, Anna and Sarah for all of their help.

We were a large party of 24 and have previously stayed at 8 other hostels where we hired out the whole place. Bracken Tor is up there with the best.

Overall a great week... and the weather was really kind to us too!
Would definitely recommend this Hostel as a great place for a large walking group with pour without kids.
Only downside is no pub nearby but then we brought our own! hic !

We booked the Bracken Tor YHA as an experience for out 4 young grandchildren.
We had a room with 6 bunk beds, yes it was a tight squeeze but we knew this when booking. When we eventually found the hostel (road diversions in place due to ongoing roadworks) the young man in reception made us most welcome, he gave us some tips of where to go and took the time to show us on the map. 
Our room had its own shower /toilet and I must say it was all lovely and clean.
The communal area again was clean and tidy with a TV and DVD player and plenty of tables and chairs. The kitchen was very well equipped and spacious. We enjoyed our stay so much that we think hotels are a thing of the past as this holiday offered the children total freedom with such large open grounds..we are becoming YHA members and hope other hostels follow Bracken Tor high standard. 

We hired the entire site for the weekend and the function room for a black tie party on the saturday evening.  Friends and family stayed at the houses and camped on the field, the facilities are great and because it is two houses we were able to locate the more sedate guests in the lodge (which was warm, on flatter ground and has modern facilities) and the younger guests in the house on the hill.  The camping ground will fit about 8 tents comfortably and has two fire areas!  Communication was very good with Anna coordinating, on site Fran was very helpful and couldnt have helped more.

The function room was spacious with great views and the real star of the show was the catering!  We have various folks with allergies and some that are just fussy, the food was clearly labelled and I even had a range of gluten free food I could chose from, for a change!  I thought that the menu had sounded plain but adequate for the price....but it was fabulous and so well presented!  Much more than I had expected too, in dishes and quantity.  Everyone was happy except for some real oldies who dont like garnish on their food (Oh come on!!!).

The clean team were in on the morning we left and they were all very friendly and helpful.  We had visited before we arrived, just to ensure that we knew the lie of the land - which is how we knew lovely Fran who looked after us.

I would recommend it for a wedding party  (the garden has a lovely gazebo) or another weekend exclusive hire.  It was worth every penny.
