Bulmer Tye House

We enjoyed staying here, our dog was also allowed, I found the owners accomodating and interesting to talk too. The house has massive grounds and the owner also gave us some talks around various elements etc - you stay in a room with the main house and are essentially sharing their house so if you want a typical room in a premier inn then this is different.

The house is a wonderful rambling Victorian/Edwardian mansion set in its own bluebell wood and ornamented with period furniture, books and paintings. Everything has been lovingly maintained as it would have been a century ago, from the grandfather clock in the hall to the entrance bell. Noel and Peter are wonderful - they are very welcoming and have a wealth of knowledge and collections of items from 1850 and earlier which they seem happy to share on request. Peter also makes clavichords which you can have in your room to play! Perfect for history, art or music enthusiasts or writers - this house is a wonderful antidote to cramped urban life. There are plenty of lovely walks, there is a gastro pub a hundred yards away, and the town of Sudbury is 2 miles away with a river, restaurants and bars. Although everything in the house is clean and has been carefully arranged for comfort, it is not an ordinary hotel/b&b and people expecting a lot of modern conveniences may be disappointed. Bulmer Tye house deserves to be appreciated on its own merits - bring some Jane Austen to read to get you in the mood! I look forward to visiting again.

Peaceful retreat

On arrival  a note on the front door asked me to go down the track to the workshop where I would find the man of the house. This done I was shown to my room which surprisingly was several degrees colder than the rest of the house. I was assured that it would warm up soon, it didn't. I slept with my socks on !!
Further inspection of the room revealed; no tea tray, no tv, no wardrobe and it took me a while to work out that the bedside lamp wasn't broken, just not plugged in to the only socket in the room which was under the bed?!
Never mind too tired so decided to wash and go to town for bite to eat and the cash (no cards) needed for my stay.
Now...... the bathroom! No shower, not essential but have you tried washing your hair without even a hand held shower? It wasn't easy in this small tin bath and had my wife been there im sure would have brought tears of laughter from her! I must say it was kind of my hosts to supply two different bars of soap even though they were both well used !?!
Now that's a first and hopefully a last.
Breakfast was in the kitchen (maybe the dining room is for special occasions?) Tea, an ample supply of cereals and homemade bread and marmalade (very nice) a single boiled egg was offered but a look of horror appeared on his face when I said I would prefer poached ......i took the boiled! It hurt to part with the cash even though they were a lovely couple, just stuck in a time warp. With a 12hr day ahead in true British style i said "Thank you" and left !

No kettle in room no tv in the room no heating in the room ..... just awful i won't be sending my parents there again. Better off in a tent. You cant even have a take away as your not allowed to eat it in the room. Its not a guest house in a big house with spare rooms that the owners rent out . Leave this hotel do not go there.

Horrendous 

Mildly eccentric but nice people in a beautiful quirky old house.  The house is pretty run down and needs some serious renovation though.

The bathroom facilities are really not good at all.  We chose to come home for a shower in a clean environment instead. Unfortunately one couple in our party stayed two nights and needed those facilities to get ready for a wedding. Personally, I couldnt have done so. 

We had specifically booked 3 rooms in total but were only given 2 so our adult son had to sleep in a small bed in our room. No disaster - but not what had been agreed and not what we were charged for either!

Someone banging on the bedroom door shouting "breakfast is ready" was not a pleasant way to be woken at 8.30am. 

The breakfast was ok but it was strange that the hosts stood over us at the head of the table; one making occasional grunting sounds.  We chuckled about it but others may get a little freaked out by it. 

Within 5 minutes of finishing breakfast it was made clear that we needed to leave promptly as the hosts had other plans for the day. We think it may have been with visiting family who had taken over the 3rd room we should have had.

It would have been 3/5 and an interesting, but not unpleasant exparience if not for the totally inadequate bath / shower facilities that were also rather grubby. 

Despite liking the hosts, we were pleased and relieved to get away. 

Oh, good mattresses and bedding though!

Quirky but run down

Was unable to check into my room on the Wednesday night as their late check-in is not as late as advertised. However I was shocked to find that this therefore meant they cancelled my Thursday and Friday night reservations without contacting me first and still took the payments for both nights. They refused to refund the two nights that I still planned to stay for leaving me £150 out of pocket and forced to pay for an alternative hotel for three nights. Would not recommend to anyone. Zero customer service.
