Golden Sand Beach Hotel

We have been visiting Hikkaduwa for a number of years and now always find ourselves returning to eat at the Golden Sand Beach Hotel because the quality of the food is so good and the location is ideal, just a few yards from the waves lapping onto the beach. The Sri Lankan vegetable curries are of a standard we have not found matched anywhere else and for 450 rupees the portions are as much as you can eat and extremely good value. The fish and other sea food is also reasonably priced and very well cooked with the Red Snapper being a particular highlight. The service is friendly and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a good meal along this stretch of the beach.

We are a Vegetarian couple that just Love golden sand beach restaurant and their rice and curry dishes! Proper sri lanka food and sooo much of it. In the end we ordered only one to share bcus it's that much food for only 450rp! Super friendly staff who also are looking after the wildlife on the beach. A huge turtle came up one night while we ate to lay her eggs by the restaurants. The boys running the place now look after the eggs who will hatch in 41days. 

The hotel is just touching the sealine and is the closest one to the sea. Scuba diving , coral reefs viewing in glass bottom boats and swimming are the main activitity.
A calm and quite place. Very expensive restaurant compared to Srilankan standards.
Sea food restaurants are avaialable out side. We had a weeks stay there.

Excellent Sri Lankan food and seafood

The food is amazing!

4 of us stayed here for 3 nights. It's right on the beach. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are a bit dated and the mattresses are hard, but to balance that out, the food is fantastic and the drinks are cheap. If you book through agoda, you'll get the rooms cheaper. We payed £17.50 per room including breakfast which is amazing. A Tuk Tuk from Galle bus station should cost no more than 500 rupees. 

Very friendly

We are budget travellers and are used to staying at average/ basic accommodation. We've had our fair share of poor hotels over the years, but we have NEVER stayed at such a horrific place. 

The room: it outright looks like a prison cell; slits were cut into the wall with no windows. Only one creepy light in the room. A territorial spider, a lost crab and insects infested the room. The towels were used and had black streaks on them?! The replacements we got were partially shredded. The sheets had holes and stains, and were horribly dirty. Everything smelled awful. 

The bathroom: horror movie stuff. There was no hot water FYI, but perhaps we missed that in the booking description.

Overall: The owner seemed to make up prices (which we figured out after chatting to other lodgers) and refused some people breakfast even though they had paid for it in advance. There is supposedly WIFI but it doesn't work. And in fact they switch off the router after a certain hour and often forget to turn it back on in the morning. It was just a horrible experience overall. Do yourself a favour and skip this one.

There was one positive though: the location - it was great and on the beach.
