We spent 3 nights in Dar Calipau hotel in late May 2009 and we'd like to share our feedback.

LOCATION. It's the real plus and probably the only reason why you would choose Dar Calipau amongst the various riads in Fes. Location is great in the very middle of city medina (old pedestrian town), on the main street leading to the central Mosque. Despite it's on the main street, we found it incredibly quiet at night and apparently no muezzin shouting at 5am to call people to morning prayer.
There's a nice terrace overlooking the old city but sadly no sun umbrellas, making it impossible to stay out in the sun for breakfast. A big pity.

ROOMS. Dar Calipau has just 4/5 rooms and they call them "suite" but it's good std rooms. 
Decoration is good, what you would expect from a renovated Moroccan riad. Rooms are around the riad courtyard where people have breakfast, meaning that the tiny glasses don't offer much protection from the noise coming from the tables where people talk while having breakfast - don't expect to sleep well beyond 8.30am unless you have heavy sleep.  
Room cleanliness was a plus, well done. 
Maintenance clearly a minus, A/C was not working, nor they repaired it during our 3 nights stay. One window couldn't open and they didn't repair it during our 3 nights stay.

STAFF. Plus: good email communication with their reservation center, English spoken. Minus: bad housekeeping (see above). 
Staff was very friendly the first day and offered us complimentary mint tea and cakes... but at night they tried to drive us to a nearby expensive restaurant which we refused because it was an obvious overpriced tourist trap. From the very moment of our refusal they changed their attitude, no more free tea, no more cakes, they didn't warn us that the hour has changed (daylight saving time) and we seriously risked to miss our outbound flight. Very disappointing behaviour.

FOOD. Breakfast is good with delicious freshly squeezed orange juice (not processed), bakery products, eggs etc. You won't be hungry anymore until lunchtime. Staff asked us about having dinner at the riad but we preferred restaurants outside, far cheaper.

PRICES. We negotiated 70€ per night including breakfast for a double room with private bathroom. With 30€ we had airport pickup/return. Dar Calipau accept Visa and MasterCard but they don't have the card machine; you have to give them the numbers and their reservation center debits you the amount - meaning that they can virtually deduct any sum of money and there's no client signature on a piece of paper.

Great location is the real plus

It was a rainy day in the Medina and the restaurant we were looking for was closed. This is how we ended up in Riad Dar Calipau. It looked a little rundown but we decided that it was OK for a drink, especially considering the rain. When we decided to sit inside, you could smell the weed but we decided to stay after we got two glasses orange juice and some Moroccan cookies. 

Because the orange juice was 30 dirham per glass, which is outrageous (in a normal restaurant you shouldn't pay more than 15 dirham), we thought the cookies came with them (because we didn't order them). Unfortunately, when we got the bill, we had to pay another 40 dirham for cookies that normal don't cost more than 2 dirham per piece and we had 6 in total.

After trying to explain to the owner the normally when you get something with your drinks, like cookies or bread, without the guest ordering it, this is considered as free, the owner pretended he didn't understand us, while he spoke English when we came in. 

For the first time in Fes we felt really scammed. We highly recommend going to any other place in the beautiful Medina of Fes. 

Worst place in Fes

The orange salade didn't have the usual fleur d'oranger so was just oranges with cinnamon, the chicken not fried enough, I think the lait amandier gave me diarrea and the bill was relatively very high!
