Gorgeous area , beaches and very secluded! I got up at sunrise and really enjoyed hanging on the beach and taking photographs. The food was absolutely wonderful! I highly recommend this place for people who want an area away from the tourist destinations and just want a clam and relaxing place to stay. The huts are beautiful!

Kali Manik is a well-designed Eco Resort. Attention has been paid to details, from the design of the cottages to the materials used in them. We stayed in the gorgeous Seashell cottage for three days. The service was personal and extremely friendly. The staff helped us plan our days. Although the location is far from any hub of activities, we were busy. The hotel connected us to a wonderful driver, who took us to the nearby national park, where we went trekking for half a day. We also visited coffee and vanilla plantations in Munduk, hiked down to a waterfall and visited a few temples.  On another occasion, we tried our hands at basket weaving thanks to a local villager who came on site to teach us some rudiments. The food at the restaurant was delicious, whether it was breakfast or regular meals. All in all, we had a terrific, memorable time at Kali Manik.

We were trying to get off the beaten track in Bali and find our corner in paradise.  

We didn't achieve, but we got close with this place.  First of all, can I just say that we didn't manage to find paradise, because a paradise beach is something that does not exist in Bali.  Either you go to Kuta, where beaches have poor water quality but not that much visible waste and are mobbed by throngs of tourists, or you head towards the north, the sand is darker, dirtier and covered with rubbish as beaches aren't cleaned.

This place is right on the beach, but unfortunately, no one in their right mind would consider to lye on it, as it is covered with rubbish: plastic bottles, rags, old shorts, shoes, plastic bags, and other unidentified objects.  However, the hotel as got some nice green gardens with a couple of bungalows facing the beach where you can chill out and tan whilst watching/listening to the sea.

We also enjoyed a beautiful sunset o the beach, after finding a spot to sit on the beach on some rocks with less rubbish on them.

PROS:
- The food was delicious [however, see Neutral comments]
- The place has some real character
- The staff were very nice
- The activities offered.  We did the dancing and the fishing.  I would definitely recommend the dancing and the fishing, though I didn't enjoy eating the small fish so much.  great cultural experience.
- Some of the other guests went to a funeral ceremony overnight in the temple and the hotel helped them arrange that.  It is absolutely fantastic experience for them and great that the staff are so accommodating.

CONS:
- It was definitely NOT dirty, but it was obvious there was a certain level of cleaning that was not done.  Our mosquito net, for example, was pretty dirty, it looked like it had been hanging there for a couple of years without ever getting cleaned.
- The bathroom shower was very, very quaint, reminded me of something out of the flintstones, but it flooded the whole bathroom when we used it.  It actually became a pool and it was impossible to use the toilet without 'going for a swim'.  However, no big deal as when staying in places like this you expect to give up a level of comfort for the experience
- It was very obvious that there was one very good cook, and one OK cook.  We both ordered similar dishes in different days and the difference was noticeable.  However, it was still good.

GENERAL
- It's definitely off the beaten track.  In a small village with very little tourism development.  The village has some real character and the villagers were welcoming and curious.
- The food was the best we had in Bali, however, it came with a 4-star price tag.  Wasn't too bothered about that, but you should consider that if you are on a budget.  There is also nowhere else to eat nearby as it is off the beaten track (did I mention?...)

OVERALL
We really loved this place and I feel that staying here for 3 days was just perfect after the hustle and bustle of Ubud as there isn't much about.  Perfect if you are trying to get of the beaten track and try something different.  Not so good if you enjoy a certain level of comfort.  I think there is also the potential one could suffer from 'cabin fever' [i.e. boredom] staying here.

I stayed there almost two weeks and it was a really peaceful place, a real hideaway.
It is behind a the village, next to the sea, a pretty big area and there is no other tourism around.
The three bungalows are designed and decorated very thoughtful, really "eco" and just lovely. Of course you are seldom "alone", eco also means some smaller animals here and there, inside, for example Geckos are everywhere - in Bali (or Southeast Asia). Unfortunately during the time I stayed there was really low season, so most of the time I was by myself. 
One of the greatest things was definitely the food! One of the best in Bali, and all organic! They have balinese, asian and european dishes - all I tried were great. Just the service/ kitchen is very slow and you better advise ahead (e.g. at breakfast) 
There is the sea right infront. Just as it is not a tourist area it is not a beach you might expect, like in the south of Bali. The sea and beaches are actually often very polluted (by local people and industries, a lot of waste at the beach and floating in the water - not fault of the resort), so it is not inviting for swimming.
Unfortunately the staff speaks very limited English, so there is not much communication also no proactive contact.
Getting around is actually only possible by motobike or you hire a driver. (I would never suggest go by bicycle on the bigger roads, too dangerous)
But if you look for an "eco", individual resort with organic food, you should try this place.

Don't go here. If you read anything of this review, which appears to be one of the few current and truthful accounts of this place, let it be that. I will reiterate - don't go here.

Mysteriously, the vast majority of Trip Advisor reviews for Kali Manik are glowing, which is why I booked it. The resort's website also shows the place as appealing and welcoming. However, this is not the case.

Immediately upon arriving to Kali Manik resort, we were unimpressed by our surroundings. We decided to try and give the place a chance anyway. As we were waiting for our welcome drinks to be prepared, we made many observations. The gardens were mostly brown and dead. There was a huge tree that had fallen on the path to the beach, but had not been cleaned up. The stepping stones were crumbling. You could see long forgotten trash stacked all around a building adjacent to the restaurant. There was plastic rubbish scattered AROUND THE "ECO" RESORT. The walls on the nearest guest bungalow were crumbling. Old, rusty garden hoses were lying over the main walking path. The shelves in the restaurant were messy and dusty. I went to wash my hands and the soap bar was scuzzy and the sink quite clogged. All of this was observed within about 10 minutes of our arrival.

We were then escorted to our room, which was relatively accurately represented on the website, but it was somewhat shabbier. After trying to unpack and settle, we put on swimsuits and ventured out to the beach. The ocean views were not spectacular but the garbage everywhere was especially astounding and unsightly. I was also ogled and photographed by the local fishermen, which was quite unsettling.

We were the only guests here, and the place had a lonely, creepy vibe. The food we had was decent, but prices were high and there was hardly anything on the menu that catered to vegetarians.

After wandering the brown and dead resort, not finding a single pleasant place to sit and enjoy a view after travelling 10 000 km to Bali, we elected to forfeit our deposit and leave. We called Bali Eco Stay, where we had just come from, and asked to return there for the remaining duration of our holiday. A driver was sent out immediately to "rescue" us.

From what one local woman told us (and this totally makes sense), the owners heavily invested into building their Kali Manik dream resort but it never really became financially successful. 2 years ago, they basically abandoned it and moved back to Europe. The poor few souls left trying to care for the place don't have much to work with. You can clearly tell that this place was once nice, but now it is nothing more than a neglected, run-down ghost town of a resort.
