We live about 20 miles away from this place but only yesterday, June 1st, we were able to go and stay there. Could not believe our eyes as we went in. The swimming pool, clear as cristal, with the Atlantic Ocean in the background, was something else!
Our family enjoyed the simplicity of the place and the beauty all around.
Wish we could stay longer!!!

This is a small 8 bedroom family hotel located about a mile from Cidade Velha.  There is a swimming pool at the hotel and a small rocky beach below the hotel.  Rooms are adequate and air-conditioned. Other than breakfast, food is not included in the price but is cooked to order.  There is a small bar by the pool. It is a peaceful place and at night it is just you and the stars.  It's somewhere to go if you want to get away from it all.  Owner is knowledgeable and helpful.

Pros:

- Good value
- Fresh food cooked to order
- Quiet and peaceful
- Great views
- Taxis to Praia are fairly cheap

Cons:

- A bit out of town.  You need to hire a car or are otherwise dependent on taxis
- Meals are quite expensive by Cape Verde standards
- No shops or other facilities nearby even in Cidade Velha
- Pool is cold
- Beach is rocky and hard on the feet.
- There are quite a lot of mosquitoes at night

Was here for a wedding and arrived 2 Am early and yet found the owner waiting for us. Mr Almeida always had a smile and a quick quip. Initially what we though as reluctance to communicate, soon turned out to be embarassment at not speaking English, but Shisto Almeida with his exuberance and willingness to help , made us want to stay longer.
He sings and plays several instruments and thus put a guitar or eukelele into his hands and you will have a very long and interesting evening.
Excellent place for trekking too.
Carry sea shoes and you can enjoy a swim on the rocky beach

Breath Taking!

Very Friendly Owner

In an earlier planing stage we decided to stay at this hotel - not far from the airport - for our first few nights as the reviews have been good and the e-mail contact with the owner was pleasant. When however our flight got cancelled and we changed our plans we had to cancel the reservation and the owner confirmed this. We then arrived on Santiago in a later stage of our holidays and until then had found out that it is so much off-season that we have been the only guests in most of the hotels. We therefore did not bother to call ahead to make a reservation and decided to just go and take it as it comes.
The first impression was really as unwelcoming as it could be: the property is gated and as nobody made a move to open the gate to let the car enter when we arrived, I decided to get out and check availability on foot. During the time I was gone the lady of the house shouted at my travel partner to immediately leave (he was not even on the property then). He told her that he had to wait for me as I was inside to inquire and she told him in a rough tone that he was lying and that nobody was inside and that he sould leave otherwise she would call the police. Meanwhile, inside the property, I had a look at two of the rooms, one 1st and one 2nd level and by the way mentioned to the owner, showing them, that we had been in contact before. He remember the mail contact but apparently not that we had cancelled and that he had confirmed that and he got very angry with me and unpolite. We decided to stay at the hotel despite the grumpy owners all the same, as the location is so beautiful and calm and the ambience with all the beautiful flowers was so serene.
We had lunch and dinner on the terrasse which was very good and freshly prepared and served by two nice young local ladies, compliments for their cooking and friendliness and attention to detail. The wine choice is very limited and extremly expensive.
Breakfast was very nice and fresh. Even when we have been the only guests, the two young ladies had prepared a nice buffet breakfast for us and kept coming by to see what else we could want and how we would have our eggs. They really are the greatest asset to this hotel.
We spent the afternoon reading on the terrasse around the pool. The beach lounges seemed new, so an improvement since the previous posts apparently, and plentiful. We saw the owner now and then, but he did not pay attention anymore and was probably still angry with us for cancelling. 
We had a groundfloor room, which was rather dark with dark red velvet interior and had a mildrew smell. The matrasse was worn and sinking into the middle. The bathroom was large, but nothing to even put your toiletries. Dont expect bathroom products - even for the prize you pay which was more than in comperable hotels in the area.
During the night, even with all the windows closed and AC on, we had a veritable moskito attack and wondered, where all those biting beasts came from. We found out in the morning, when we moved the curtains: the haevy velvet courtains as well as the bedspread and even the shower curtain where full of moskitoes. We have been biten all ower and therefore decided to move on for the next night, even if we would have wanted to stay another night just for the location. We had passed a new hotel not yet on TA then and decided to give it a try (see my review).
The next disappointment came when we wanted to pay. As we checked out after just one night - we had not made commitement for more than one night when arriving - the lady of the house again got angry with us. She refused to take credit cards and called one of the young ladies to present us the account to avoid talking to us. The girl had to get back to her and she counted out the return money - and when we counted this it we found out that she had tried to cheat us. She got even angrier when we found out and shouted at us that she had given the right change and accused us of cheating - the poor girl still between us. We have been glad to leave this place as we did not feel welcome at all and understood why it is empty while the new one next door is fully occupied even in off-season.

beautiful location

I don't give a 1 point rating easily. But then... I've never left a hotel early. We booked this hotel for 6 nights and left after the first. Not that everything was terrible. Just nothing was right. I don't have high expectations of hotels in countries like Cape Verde but this one was even below my "as long as I have a bed and a good shower I'm fine" mentality.  

It started when we arrived: the hostess did not even say hello, just started talking to the taxidriver. I assumed she didn't speak English and wanted him to translate, but later it turned out she did speak english. It was also the taxidriver (!) who showed us to our room.  A room that was in terrible shape. The window was loose in its frame, so it kept rattling in the stark Atlantic wind. The shower had no hot water - though they fixed it soon enough, compliments to that. But even with hot water I was hardly able to shower because apparently the showehead hadn't been cleaned in a long time and only gave a very small needle-thin water spray. It felt like being tortured with small pins. 

After a not so good night's rest (the bed was terrible, you could feel the springs through the mattress, every move I made would wake op my girfriend and vice versa, the matress was covered in wat looked like a sheet made out of paper, like the throw-away nurses caps) we came down for breakfast at 9:00. To be presented with the next disappointment. Maybe in this hotel breakfast is not served until 9AM, but I wouldn't know becuase the hostess had not informed us of anything and there was no info sheet in the room. But 9 seems like a reasonable time for breakfast, 

Breakfast is buffet style, but all we could find on the table were 4 bread buns (enough for the 2 of us, but could we assume all the other guests had already eaten)? some slices of cheese and slices of spam. An empty dish that used to contain some jam but was now empty and an almost empty buttercup. Upon asking for some more butter and jam the answer was a simple "finished". 

This was the last drop for us and we decided to move into the much better - despite the reviews - hotel Limeira. Which is a lot closer to the town center, another plus. From Por do Sol it's a half hour walk, or during daytime you can get a Alugers  (local bus) or taxi. At night there are no other options than to walk.

When we were taking our suitcases out we saw the hostess and informed her that we were leaving. Her reaction? Just "OK", as if it is completely normal for guests to leave early. When tried to explain our reasons for leaving she got really angry, not wanting to listen and interrupting me before I could explain anything. 

I you are a masochist I can really recommend this place, otherwise stay far away!
