The Gateway Inn

The motel is very close to Banff. The room was simple and clean. The staff was friendly. We can see Canadian rocky from our windows. The price was unbeatable. We had everything we needed and enjoyed our stay.

My friend and I stayed on the icefields Parkway for 10 days and had to find a place to stay before we drove back to Calgary.  My friend Kat found it on her phone and I was a little unsure because the last time I stayed in a motor inn type of motel we a long time ago. I didn't have the best memories, a lot of smoke and noise. But as we walked in to the room, we had the room on the second floor on the end. The windows let a lot of nice sunlight in, the room looked like it had been renovated and was well taken car of. Plus the beds were really comfortable. The shower was very good too. it's funny that we stayed at some fancy places but the best nights sleep I had was here. it was old school but in a good way. I will stay here the next time I come Canmore.

The place is far from new, but not far from nice.  The reception was pleasant, and the attendant even found a lower price for us when she determined we are all seniors.

Our rooms were very clean and very comfortable.  The flat-screen TV was in an odd place, but not a problem.  The motel is far enough from the highway to be quiet, and is very close to Canmore for restaurants and very close to the entrance to BNP.

We loved staying there and would willingly stay again if we are ever in the area.

This motel is reasonably priced.  It is a basic, older facility but is very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.  Selection of tv channels was much better than pricey hotel in Calgary!  No hesitation in recommending.

This motel is perfectly placed for Banff, Canmore and even Calgary. I can't fault the  staff. Lovely and attentive. They even blew the dust off our car while they were having a clean up outside. Without me having to ask. 

Room was clean, but a little out dated. Not a major issue. Wi-Fi perfect for calling home. 

The only issue I really have is that there was a lack of cutlery. We had a microwave and a fridge. Even a coffee machine. But no plates or knives or forks. Other than that it was a lovely place. 

Highly recommended. And if I come back this way I'd stay again.

Great choice over the very expensive lodging in Canmore.

Lovely Motel... BUT

Clean and Simple

Older may be better!

Older motel but was very clean. There is always a bit of musty smell in older buildings but leaving the window open took care of that. Nice outdoor area with firepits. Off the highway enough that it was not too noisy. Room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. My only complaint is small and that was there is no outlet in the bathroom for a hair dryer and no mirror in the main room to use those outlets for hairstyling. I usually bring my own mirror but forgot, so very minor issue. Front desk was very friendly. She is not there all the time but there is a buzzer to call if you need anything. For a one night stop it was perfect for us and way less than staying in Canmore. They also have pet friendly rooms, we did not have a pet but the room next door did (they kept their dog very quiet).

When looking for accommodation we found Banff to be very expensive and this proved to be a value for money alternative.  Arriving by train in Banff we took a taxi to Harvie Heights for the going rate of 60 dollars.  Getting into Banff the next day to collect a car, we took the bus from Canmore (a doable walk of some 20 mins) which was 6 dollars for an adult, 3 for a senior.  

The Gateway Inn is easy to get to and clean but was a bit daunting when we first entered our upstairs room as it seemed very dark and not helped by dark bed covers.  Some brighter lights might help to brighten the place up a bit.

Value for money

We stayed at the Gateway Inn for two nights while exploring Banff National Park.  If you are looking for an affordable, clean, basic hotel in the Banff area, this is the place for you!

It must be said that the rooms are quite dated.  But we were glad to have a microwave, refrigerator, TV, and reliable WiFi in the room, and everything was VERY clean.  It was an easy 3-5 minute drive to restaurants in Canmore for breakfast or dinner. 

You could easily pay double the price of this place for a basic chain hotel in the Canadian Rockies. While the Gateway Inn isn’t a luxury hotel, it’s a great option for budget-minded travelers in an expensive area!
