Stayed here for almost 2 weeks with a university group, Staff are very accommodating to big groups and breakfast included was a nice addition. Courtyards and garden and very tranquil and a nice place to relax. Centrally located and easy to get anywhere. Rooms in second and third courtyard and significantly nicer/warmer/quieter than those in the first beside the road. Watch out for overcharging at some points during stay. Perfect place to stay for big groups, even if at a slightly increased cost compared to others. Staff were incredibly friendly and more than happy to tell us about the rich history of the building which has been in the same family since it was owned by the President José Manuel Pando.

Perfect for big groups!

Very nice hotel with an open and a covered pazio, both of which were mostly too cold to sit comfortably around this time of year. The small, uncomfortable breakfast room was completely cooled down by the always open door to the pazio. Because of the lack of heating, the closing of the door would not have changed anything. We had a bit of bad luck with the heating and the warm water. The more expensive room was put on our heart because of the heating that went out at night on the first visit and did not go on the second visit. Hot water. The staff was very friendly. Every criticism is also to be enjoyed with caution. At another time of the year it may look quite different. For performance, it is clearly too expensive.

We booked and paid for a room for three people and got one with two single beds. Room and bath were substandard.

Connie was very helpful in getting rooms shuffled around for our family of four. Free coca tea and coffee. Nice courtyard, older rooms but renovations have begun. Definitely worth the affordable price.

Familia alegre

Very good the hotel, an important colonial house in the history of Bolivia, as it was the home of a president.The construction and preservation of the hotel was beautiful, it would improve the wifi connection that is not very good and it would be appreciated that breakfast was made early, so that passengers who have tours could get a meal.

Well, well, well, well.

It was wet and dark and it had taken us 1 hour 40 in rush hour traffic. How depressing to arrive at our double room here. To be fair, in the morning the public areaslooked quite characterful and there was a garden and courtyards. It also looked as though there were better rooms too. We had one in the second courtyard top floor. Room was bleak and bathroom just horrible with cracked and dirty floor. On the plus side there was no traffic  noise and the bed was clean. Glad we were only there one night. We left too early for breakfast. It was cheap. 280 Bs.  About £31 at current rates

Should have chosen the upgrade

Though cold La Paz in wintertime! 
We had a great stay at Hostal Republica, spending 5 nights at the Casita (villa) of the Hostal, close to the fireburner in evenings and mornings, but feeling very welcome by staff and owners. Recommended!

Great casita, warm owners!

Very quiet and peaceful, yet quite old and cold building! Staff were very helpful and the attached tour agency was great.

Excellent price relation quality, spacious room with private bathroom, hot water, very rich breakfast and complete. Very good attention, its owner a very kind lady. Excellent location (2 blocks from Plaza Murillo).

We loved the Hotel!

The hotel is in the historical par of La Paz just a couple of blocks away from Plaza Murillo. The hotel itself is a historical gem that was used to be the house of the first President of Bolivia. The inner courtyards are great and just need renovation and more plants to make it vibrant and pleasing. The third and outdoor courtyard is amazing just it needs more outdoor seats and tables that will match the old world feel of the property. The rooms are decent and clean. The bathroom is basic but there is an abundant supply of hot water which is a must in La Paz. You can really feel that you are teleported back in colonial times while staying in Hostal Republica. I will definitely stay here again once I am back in La Paz. I just highly recommend that they renovate the restaurant and improve their breakfast selection, kitchen equipment and cutleries. I also like the reception area, it is so warm and I love history, so I like the feeling of being in it.
