Hostel Hikers Den

We stayed in a separate building to the main hostel, which was nice and quiet at night, with an excellent kitchen. The advice on hiking from the brothers who run the hostel is top-class - they gave us various options and marked out the routes for us on maps.me and these were extremely reliable. We joined one of their organised River Tara white water rafting trips, which was absolutely terrific. Really good fun, especially swimming in the bracingly cold and wonderfully clean water.

Hikers den should be your only stop in Zabljak for hiking Durmitor National Park. The owners mark your maps, give briefings for each hike and are genuinely in love with there work. If going solo or looking for a hiking buddy/buddies, the hikers den is the only place you should be looking.. Alex and Stefan are 1st class all the way.
 I got screwed last year by two other accommodations in the area, you have been warned.

In the hiker's den, you will not only receive advice on equipment, trails, and safety tips for your next mountain. You will also get advice and stories about politics and life. As the erudite owners can accommodate your stay as well as your appetite for questions and stories of all kinds.

Where do I start... I went there to travel by myself. 
I ended up staying 10 nights. I simply loved the balance between hiking in the beautiful reserve in the daytime and meeting new people during the evening.

Cool new people arrived almost every night. Spending the nights in the main building or outside on the porch was a lot of fun.

The owners, Stefan and Alex are very nice people. They will help you with whatever you need since the minute you arrive. 
Also, they were giving us a lot of information about the history of the Balkans, relationships between the countries, and everything that led to where Montenegro is today.

The place is suitable for hikers. Quiet during the night, early wake up (if you want) including lifts to the reserve and the trails.

Overall, it was an amazing experience. I highly recommend it

Zabljak was a little slice of paradise and no better place to spend it than at hikers den. Stefan and Alex are inspirational. Entrepreneurs, academics, eco activists, mountaineers, family men, the list goes on... Early to bed early to rise. Respect the mountain.

If you consider visiting Durmitor National Park, then you absolutely need to stay at Hikers Den in Žabljak! The location is very convenient, the hostel is comfy, with a nice and friendly atmosphere, but most importantly, Alex and Stefan are extremely knowledgeable about the mountains and give you plenty of excellent advice on what to do, where to go and how to organise your time in the national park. So don't hesitate and go there, but make sure you book at least 3 or 4 nights, you will really need that time if you want to enjoy your time in Durmitor, as there is so much to see and do!

I stayed at Hiker's Den in Sep 2018 and had a wonderful time. The hostel has Wifi, bathrooms and rooms were clean, there was warm water to bathe in the evening, and there was also a fully functioning kitchen. There was a great vibe in the hostel, and there was a nice area for travellers to sit around in the evening to share their stories. The rooms were also extremely reasonably priced.

Alex and Stefan (who own the hostel) are not only incredibly cool to hang out with, I believe they are extremely caring and concerned for guests. They hike the trails in the mountains themselves when the season opens to be sure it is safe for travellers. When hiking to the peak (Bobotov Kuk) or to the Ice Cave, they give a debrief every morning before you head out, giving you tips on what to watch out for, and also download a map app and set rally points so you do not get lost. GPS for the app works even without data roaming. 

They also give great tips on where to eat, as well as other activities to do in the area, eg. cycling, rafting, etc. They offer some of these activities through their tour agency Durmitours. They also offer advice if you want to hitchhike, catch the bus to your next destination, and even recommendations for other hostels. Bascially, almost anything you could need. 

As much as ascending Bobotov Kuk is a must when visiting Žabljak, so is a stay at Hiker's Den.

Hiker’s Den is a great place to stay. The owner Alex and his brother Stefan (and brother in law Isaac who is there for the season), provides guidance on hikes to do in the area (some of them literally at your doorstep). They understand travellers are often on a budget and give tips to make things cheaper (e.g. hitchhiking back from Bobotov) and provide services like €3 van do the starting point of Bobotov Kuk. When you check in, they give you suggestions of what to do based on the amount of time you’re staying there. Alex also gets everyone together in the morning to go over the route of your hike (pinning it for you on maps.me). This morning gathering is great for solo travellers as you meet others doing the same hike. 

Alex can help you to plan out other parts of your trip and is basically a walking travel encyclopaedia, particularly about the Balkans. 

There are a few big kitchens and lounge areas which are great for playing cards after a hike and a nice sitting area out the front for post hike drinks. 

I loved my stay at Hiker’s Den and my time in the mountains wouldn’t have been nearly as fun without the people I met thanks to the way this hostel is run.

Alex and Stefan know everything about all the tours, the hiking trails and give you a briefing before you set off.  Nice outdoor area to chat with others.  I did the rafting tour.  It was scenic but currently the rapids are grade 1 or 2 so if you're more interested in the rafting side rather than sightseeing,  then skip it (June would be the ideal time). The hike to Honor of was tough going but so worth it.  Supermarkets nearby to cook own meals.  The bunk beds are low so don't choose the lower beds if you like to sit up in bed.  Multi plugs are provided and secure lockers for valuables.  Definitely recommend to stay here for the helpful staff to help you plan out your stay.

Best place to stay when visiting Durmitor National Park

We had a great 3 night stay at Hikers Den and would recommend it to anyone who is travelling to Zabljak!  As most have said, Alex and Stefan will look after you and provide lots of good advice.  The hostel has a small supermarket next door and there are a couple of good bars and restaurants within a couple of minutes walk (including a much larger supermarket)!  Enjoy a stay in Zabljak but more importantly here in Hikers Den!
