Ukelele Hostel

I chose a private room at Ukelele, and liked it well enough to come back two more times during my South American stint. Nice staff, good location, and it even had a cat on the property, Milton, that helped me feel more at home.

The hostel was a lovely town house hidden away in the hustle and bustle of Montevideo.  The location was good but we felt a bit uneasy walking around at night.  We had a great view of the pool and garden from our room and liked the style and decor.  The facilities were adequate although it would have been nice to have been provided with towels instead of having to rent them.

Our experience at ukelele hostel was great! We stayed for a total of 3 nights in a 6 bed dorm and were happy with our stay. The room was very spacious, had lockers for our belongings and plenty of space under the beds for the bigger bags. The bathroom was big and close to our room which was good and it was always kept clean and smelt great (air fresheners) The common room downstairs was great, very big and plenty of space for a number fo people. We didn't use the outdoor pool while we visited but it was a lovely area to sit outside and soak up some sun. The kitchen and facilties were good. Once again plenty of space and they had everything we needed. Breakfast was not included for our stay and the wifi was good in the rooms and common areas for facebok and banking etc not so good for netflix or watching movies. Would certainly re visit here if ever in Montevideo again.

A great hotel in the Maldonado district. Lovely leafy streets and a shaded walk of 10 minutes to Plaza Independencia and the old city just beyond. Close to the waterfront esplanade which is the best place for a sunset across the bay. Bathrooms are spacious and generally clean. Breakfast spread is decent. Pool and outdoor area incredibly inviting in the heat. Spacious downstairs common areas. Beds are a bit old and wooden, dorms are simple and clean. Lovely old wooden interior with high ceilings.

Ukelele is a good hostel in an ok location but it can be noisy. This almost gets 5 stars but I couple of points which let it down. 

Staff: good English and friendly. We did have a couple of problems with the AC and hot water but staff were keen to fix and I got a very nice email from the owner apologising for the inconvenience after we left as he didn't see us himself.

Location : less than 20 minutes walk to the main square and old town. On a quiet street with some restaurants, bars and a small supermarket nearby. From the bus station we got a local bus to Plaza Cagancha which is close, though Uber is so cheap there that you're better getting that if you can.

Hostel: nice grand building with good communal spaces and outdoor pool and seating. Decent kitchen with some herbs and cooking oils. It is an old building so it can be noisy with creaky stairs and slamming doors (some of which needed repairing). Internet is ok in the main area but didn't reach our room well, nor the breakfast room or pool. 

Room: we had a double which was nicely decored and looked out onto the pool. Comfy bed. The negative is that it was directly over the kitchen so a bit noisy at times (annoying when people get in at 3am and start making food!). Also the door handle was a bit broken so annoying to open.

Shared bathrooms: there were 3 toilets/shower which seemed to be enough. These were not luxurious but ok. Shower good enough.

Breakfast : pretty basic with coffee, cheap bread for toast, jam etc plus a Yoghurt drink and apples.

Overall a decent hostel. 

Recommendations : get better doors, get another WiFi router and maybe some more more fruit and cereal for breakfast and it will be even better.
