I stayed two nights at the Van Ness. It was a great value for San Francisco. The cost for the room wasn't much more than what I paid for the daily parking at a downtown SF hotel where I stayed on my last visit. At the Van Ness, parking is free, which is a real bonus for San Francisco. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. I had a bit of trouble with my TV, but the manager came to my room and helped me to get it working. The location is very good, within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Russian Hill, and other sites. - although you sometimes have to walk over very steep hills to get where you are going! A great place - I would stay here again.
