De Vere Theobalds Estate

We've just been for a truly relaxing family weekend away at The Birch, Cheshunt. As a mum of 5 year old twins (one with Autism/ADHD), its rare to have a weekend where I actually feel relaxed at the end of it - especially in November weather. Thank you Birch! All of the staff were warm and helpful. We stayed in family room in The Ridings, which was newly refurbished, powerful shower, luxurious bedding with a beautifully made rock solid bunk, we all slept like logs. The immaculate interior design is original Shoreditch art warehouse, similar to Soho House East, with luxurious furnishing, lighting design and zoned areas. We loved the European family friendly vibe. My child with Autism was not just 'tolerated', he was warmly welcomed, which bought tears to my eyes as this is the first hotel we have been to that is genuinely inclusive. The kids club here is Ofsted Outstanding and the staff are very experienced (including SEN) and lovely. The classes are structured and the best of holiday fun, not just childcare. My kids loved all of them; bath bomb making, art club, a fun treasure hunt in the forest around the huge country estate grounds which are beautiful, and forest school where the kids got to see how to make a fire in the fire pit, forest face paint and other fun outside in the fresh air and the best of all was the UV disco. Parents can hang out nearby in the Hub lounge and enjoy some downtime while being available if the kids need them. My husband enjoyed the wework area, where he was busy on his laptop or reading his book, much needed recharging in peace. The food/drinks are outstanding. We all enjoyed going into the bakery where we were greeted with enormous smiles from the bakers and the kids got some freshly made gingerbread men which they were extremely chuffed about. Every single food item is freshly made with the kitchen garden grown ingredients and its all utterly delicious, foodie heaven. We are vegetarian where there is often little choice and less attention to detail, not here! It was too cold for the Lido but we didn't miss swimming at all. We didn't go to the gym or do the exercise classes, next time... As a Londoner I thought it was extremely well priced for the all round quality. At the end of the weekend, my Autistic child is happily regulated from being allowed self-directed play indoors and outdoors to his hearts content with people that understand him. I have travelled a lot and been to some of the best hotels and restaurants in the world. This is hands down the best hotel I have ever been to for a family weekend where every member of the family enjoys it. We will definitely come back again.
