This is my 4th stay at Star Hostel. So far I’ve enjoyed all my stays. 

The location is very convenient as it is just minutes away from Taipei Main Station, where you can take the metro or trains. I chose a private room with ensuite bathroom. Price wise it’s definitely more affordable than a lot of hotels in the area. Rooms are clean and quiet. The common area is spacious and comfortable. Breakfast is ok and they have a different menu every day.

Clean, quiet rooms. Minutes away from Taipei Main Station

Spent 5 nights in a single private room, and extended my stay by 1 night in a female 6-pax dorm room [my flights changed & hostel was fully booked out in private rooms hence the extra night in a dorm]. In short, loved my stay here and will return on my next trip to Taipei.

Location - perfect access to airport train, the MRT, main bus and overland train station, plus plenty within walking distance of the hostel (food spots, cafes, massage, bike rental shops, sights like Liberty Arch, Ximending, Dihua are all walkable) and there is a delicious pepper bun shop next door, famous donut shop & a 24 hour FamilyMart across the street.

Hostel is super well run, clean and organised, plus a beautiful light, wooden & plant filled space. The staff were friendly and chatty (special shoutout to Mita and Sherry who tirelessly listened to my ambitious plans and gave recommendations to get massages, find scones, hiking, walking tours, debating my flight drama and extending my booking, plus moving my luggage between my rooms while I was out cycling). There are plenty of water coolers to refill your water bottle, the kitchen area was always spotless and organised. Loved the focus on sustainability, as well as bathmats in the dorm shower room (no more wet floor everywhere) and towels for drying dishes in the kitchen.  Breakfast was a taste of local/western fusion dish (a different dish each day) always with plenty of breads as a base start to the day. If I had one piece of feedback it would be for a bit more/different fruit (the green guava was popular but very unusual).  Rooms are simple, but sufficient, beds were comfortable in both the private and the dorm room. Dorm had lots of privacy and space in the beds and lockers. It was a bit odd having to keep my suitcase in my locker - but they are big enough to fit a large suitcase, so very secure. 

While I met and chatted to various people staying at the hostel, due to us as individuals making an effort to chat, I do think the hostel could do a little bit more in creating interactive social experiences for their activities. The activities alternate between a Nintendo Switch and a movie night which don't quite foster an interactive environment. I It would be great if they could introduce something like a mini bar hop through the neighbourhood bars one night, a Taiwanese cooking class in the excellent kitchen set up, a local walking tour one morning, even if they came at extra cost. That said, the hostel is booked out most of the time so probably doesn't need to do these things to get more guests... but it would take the hostel up a notch.  Interestingly as much as the main category of guest was solo traveler or young groups of friends, there were a few families with kids and older couples staying there - so definitely a hybrid hostel.

In summary, I was very happy with my 6 night stay and would stay again when I come to Taipei, whether solo or with a partner or group. If you make an effort to chat to others in the common area you'll likely still find people to hang out with if traveling solo.

Six nights exploring Taipei from the hub of Star Hostel Main Station

I stayed at this place for 4+3 days and on the 8th day I had to change room. At 9:30am I asked the staff if I could get the room so that I could move my stuff over without having to fully pack and unpack, rather than waiting until 3:00pm check in time. This is a courtesy that most hotels (in fact my experience is that all hotels have done that for me). The staff answered that they had no spare room at the moment but I said I was willing to wait. So I waited at the lobby until 11:00am and another staff showed up. By this time all people would have checked out so I asked again and the answer was that I had to wait for 3:00pm to check in. I was annoyed by this flip and questioned why they would not extend their courtesy especially when I had been staying there for 7 days. The staff decided that I was too much trouble and decided to kick me out of the hotel. I said I had already paid and would not accept her refund and I would wait at the lobby until check in time. She called the cops to evict me. The cops came and tried to mediate once they found that I was no trouble-maker, but the staff still wanted to evict me and the police said she had the right, I had to accept that. I then complained to the police about another staff tried to cheat me out of 900NT when I checked in but the police said it was not their responsibility. I complained this to the staff who turned out to be the manager and she would not take the case and said any complaint would only reaches her. She just said that I could report to consumer protection. Wonder why I could not experience the so-called Taiwanese hospitality? I hope if the manager wants to post any video, please post both the check-in and check-out video.

Star Hospitality?

This place is the best hostel we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in some nice hostels. We had two separate single rooms with private bathrooms for our stay and they were both clean, functional and quiet. The rooms utilized the space extremely well. In the shower there was large, refillable containers which contained shampoo, conditioner and body wash. This is a massive tick for us as it shows how sustainable the hostel wants to be. It also had drinking fountains around the hostel so you could reuse your water bottle. We were on the 5th floor with a busy street below but we couldn’t really hear anything. We didn’t really hear anything from inside the hostel at night apart form maybe the occasional toilet flush from the room next door (it wasn’t that loud just that it was quiet) which gave us a good night’s sleep. The common area is a fun spot, there is a tree house inside and a green space, plus kitchen, dining areas etc. the service was also exceptional! Big thanks to the lovely lady who tried to teach me how to say vegetarian in mandarin. The only disappointment is that it’s booked out for when we return to Taipei so we couldn’t stay there again during our trip 🤣

Clean, functional, quiet and fun

Seriously the best hostel I’ve stayed at: extremely clean, lovely common area good for working and lounging, great cooked breakfast with veg*n options. Not a party hostel though if that’s what you’re looking for.

Beautiful hostel

This is best hostel I’ve been, the facilities, rooms and cleanliness are all excellent. Staffs are accommodating and helpful, rate is fair,breakfast is good!
Some spots are also IG worthy. I highly recommend this hostel for tourists.
Location is convenient!

Best Hostel In Taiwan

I travel Taipei alone and I stayed here for one week the hostel is very clean the offer very good breakfast. The staff are very accommodating the location to Central is near the Taipei Main Station. I recommend you to stay here if you travel alone to Taipei

Good hostel experience

I love this hostel. And this review may be bias because I lived here on/off for about four months while I was stuck in Taiwan due to COVID-19 after traveling around the world for a year.

I chose to stay only in this hostel while I was living in Taipei because this hostel is THAT NICE. I've stayed in crappy, dirty hostels when I've traveled and this one is really, truly special.

First, it is very clean and modern. It has a really lovely interior decor that's very simple and sustainable but comfortable too. The treehouse and seating area is fun and has a nice communal vibe.

Also, there is central air con. Staying in Taiwan in to summer is brutally hot so having a cool, comfortable place to relax was perfect. Each room has air con as well that works really well. 

Rooms. I stayed in a mix of dorms and private rooms while I was here. The dorms are quite comfortable. Full mattresses (which you don't always get in Taiwan), nice privacy shades, good locker space, etc. There could be a few more hooks in the room, but overall, it's really quite nice. I stayed in the Female Deluxe dorm and it was really nice. And not too much street noise outside. The shared bathrooms are nice and clean too with lots of space. Only quibble here is that there are only TWO showers in the shared bathroom. If the hostel is full, it's not nearly enough, so watch your time.

Private rooms, the single is really the perfect size. Layout is functional, the desk is a great feature to have (especially if you are taking Chinese classes) and the shower in the room gives a lot of privacy without hogging up the space. Rooms get great light and are a nice break away from the hostel if you need it. Wifi is overall good in the rooms too. I stayed in a double room just before I left Taipei and had a more mixed experience. Still great space and layout, but the shower head didn't work as well and needed to be held the entire time and I had housekeeping issues with them coming very irregularly (compared to single room). Wifi on the ground floor rooms was really weak too.

Kitchen/Breakfast. This is also excellent. The breakfast you get daily is VERY generous and nicely made for a hostel. I loved everything I had and I got to try a lot of local Taiwan fruits and dishes. I got incredibly spoiled from this. The hostel also has a small kitchen with fridge space. It's pretty well stocked but can also get busy. That said, this was a nice feature to have.

Street noise. The hostel is located by main station but tucked away from the major busy roads. There can be some street noise if you face the road the hostel is on, but really it's minimal. There is a major hotel construction project though happening adjacent to the hostel and you will hear that. Construction is 7 days a week, from about 8am to 5pm (depending on weather). I tried to pick my rooms to minimize the noise but it's inevitable. And will be going on for awhile.

Neighborhood. I really loved where this hostel was located. Very easy access to main station trains, buses and MRT, and there is a ton of great local food around. IMO, the best pepper beef buns are next door to the hostel. Very nice taste for local life and I loved having so many good food options closeby.

Staff. They speak excellent English and are ready, willing and able to help with language barriers or issues in Taiwan and Taipei. Some staff is a bit more friendly than others, but everyone was really great. And available 24 hours. Truly, after that long in Taiwan, they became more like friends and still did whatever they could to help. 

Activities. Hostel has weekly activities, but many of them were stopped due to the virus. So I can't speak much on that. But people who stayed earlier when they were still happening said it was fun. Maybe I'll be able to do that next time.

This is a VERY long review of the hostel but since I spent so much time there, I had a lot to share. 

I really loved this hostel and my time there. If reality did not exist, I would have stayed longer too. 

I'm really glad I found this hostel and could make it like a home. I would 100% recommend this to anyone going to Taipei to visit and next time I'm in town, this is where I'm staying.

The best hostel in Taipei

This is a well-located hostel with many private room options. I stayed in a double room as well as a  single over two periods in February. 
It is a short walk from the main subway station, where the MRT from the airport  deposits you. Star City is close to many shops and eating places and is a good base from which to explore Taipei.
The staff - from the friendly girls at reception to the very efficient and just as friendly folks in charge of breakfast - were all super. Top marks to them.
Rooms were clean and comfortable, with daily towel change much appreciated. Shower pressure was great.
There was also free water (hot and cold) and tea/coffee in the kitchen area. 
All in,  a delightful and well thought-out place. Thank you for  a wonderful stay.

Good location, clean rooms, friendly and helpful staff

Hostel is extremely clean and great public areas. Stayed in a single room and though compact, it is functional. Close to Taipei Main Station and easy to get to anywhere either by walking or by the metro. Definitely would stay again, highly recommended! Staff are friendly and extremely thoughtful!
