A small set of bungalows and rooms on a gray sandy beach, in very poor condition. Out of price for root house bungalows. No hot water, sloping floor, no mosquito nets, damaged decoration and obsolete as desired.

What to Avoid

Buccaneer was more or less what we expected based on other reviews. It worked for our family because we wanted an affordable option right on the beach (not just a dock over the water) because our kids are little (2 and 4). As mentioned by other reviewers the free breakfast at Bibi’s restaurant was frustrating because they never opened before 9 and our kids were hangry by then. The room was clean except that the place is infested with some type of termite so there’s a coating of their discharge on different surfaces (fortunately not over the beds). It’d be great to have some sort of outdoor shower to thoroughly clean off sand before heading into the room. The coffeemaker we were given was so dirty that we didn’t use it and the fridge was dirty and smelled bad (but was still handy to have). The woman overseeing the place was very kind to us (she helped me find some material and scissors to make a temporary sling for my daughter). The sand fleas were pretty bad, especially in the evening, but that’s not the hotel’s fault and is probably a problem everywhere. A/C in the master room was also great to have. The balcony overlooking the water and lovely beach right there made it all worthwhile.

While the owner/host was very nice and accommodating, the hotel was very outdated. It appeared that they started doing some cleanup but various areas were filled w trash.

Just waiting in the airport at Bocas after leaving the Buccaneer and thought I’d leave my impressions, the good, the bad, and the ugly. First the good: Elizabeth, her sister, and everyone working there are fantastic. I can’t say enough about how welcoming and sincerely nice they all are. The view and sunrises are spectacular. The pizza place next door is nice, and the young German guy serving is very sweet and friendly. The bad: the toilet just smells. Apparently it’s a composting toilet, so we gave it some leeway, but holy cow! This morning it plugged and was not pretty. The room (lower level) is rustic. The large bed has a mosquito net but not the single bed. Bring one! Bibi’s, where you get breakfast, is supposed to open at 8:30 at the latest. They always opened late, once as late as 9:15. So if you’re an early riser, stock snacks. The ugly: bugs. Lots and lots of noseeums, aka midges, aka chitras. So bad that you can’t go out without covering up from head to toe (including socks) and long sleeves. I’m covered in 100+ bites and I do not lie on the beach. Got them while eating at Bibi’s and sitting out in front of, and inside, our lodgings. You will get bit inside the screened off room, and in your bedroom. Deet does not work. If it weren’t for the chitras, it would have been a very nice time. As it is I’m very happy to be leaving it behind. I’m attaching a pic of one of my feet. Times that by about 10 or so for the rest of me. Oh! And bites on the soles of your feet are not fun. 

Think twice

The facilities are very old and could do with some maintenance but the buglalows are literally on the beach so we couldn't complain about how rickety the stairs might be, or slanted the floor was because the view was so incredible! The staff were so extremely friendly and helpful. We would recommend staying here based on location, but don't expect a brand new resort if booking.

Old hotel in perfect location the beach!

They are comfortable and basic cabins. No luxury, sometimes the hot water is cut off, and the bed was loose, but we asked for a change of room and settled it on the spot. It is an accommodation run by a family living there, so they are always on the lookout for any concerns. Elizabeth, the owner, is loving and dedicated. They give tickets for breakfast in a very beautiful bar, with an incredible view, and it is very rich everything, but nothing abundant.

We decided to travel to Bocas Del Toro to celebrate The New Year without a crowd, or big party, just a quiet serene tropical setting and found exactly that at the Buccaneer Resort. This small group of buildings on Carenero Island, anchored by the fantastic BiBi's on the Beach was everything we were looking for!  A quiet beach, walking distance to an awesome surf spot, easy access to water taxis into Bocas town and while the accommodations are not what most would consider 5 star, consider that you are able to hear the surf from your bed, see the waves from your window or balcony, walk a few steps and take a dip in the Caribbean, what more could you really ask for from island life?  We will certainly plan to return and visit Elizabeth at the Buccaneer again on our next visit to Bocas Del Toro. The Bocas Beach Club was just opening on New Years Eve, hopefully that will become another popular waterfront hot spot on Carenero Island, also Elizabeth mentioned that our neighbor in the unit above the office was planning to open a pizza place too!!  What another great addition that would be to the Buccaneer and the coastline of Carenero Island!  

New Years Eve Dream!!!

This "resort" was supposed to be the time we splurged on our trip through Panama. We got to the island, and as we walked over, I wasn't even sure it was the right spot, because it looked so much more run down than the pictures. When we got to our room, it was as basic as could be. It smelled heavily of paint, yet was still dusty and had spider webs in the corners. The toilet barely flushed and the air conditioner blew out barely cold air. They were very accommodating when we asked for a different room. Unfortunately, the other room was in almost the same condition. We did not spend the night there.

Not as nice as the pictures lead on.

Located on one of the most beautiful carnival beaches, this resort offers a very spacious, wooden bungalow, with a huge double bed, mosquito nets at the windows and sea view. The bathroom and shower have always worked, and the managers (Gino if I remember correctly) are available and very very kind.

What a wonder.

I stayed with my boyfriend at the buccaneer resort for four days, we were very good, we had a nice cottage on the beach all for ourselves, in front of a stretch of sea where you could bathe. The owners were kind and available, we definitely recommend it!!!
