We had the pleasure to stay 2 nighs at Acacia. Just 5 minute drive outside Taupo a beautiful house with views on the lake. The room we had was huge, with a separate bedroom and ensuite bathroom. Everything was clean and well decorated. The hosts are friendly people. We had a good time staying at Acacia.

Nice accomodation, lovely people

This accomodation has amazing views from the rooms and is right near beautiful Taupo.
The couple are quite friendly and the rooms were spacious and comfortable.  When coming back after having dinner out there was no where to park as the family were visiting.   When we went to make a cup of tea there was no teaspoons at all.
The wifi did not work the entire time while we were there. In the morning we were woken up by the movement above as the kitchen area is above the bedroom downstairs.
The breakfast was average and the scrambled eggs were awful, cooked in the mirowave.  We have travelled the North Island and had amazing accomodation at reasonable prices, in the case of this accomodation we decided to spend a little more to spoil ourselves. It failed to meet our expectations for the cost.

I have deliberately waited until we finished our holiday on the North Island so I could be sure my comments were accurate after comparing Lakeside to all the other places we stayed.

I have rated the accommodation as average as it is so significantly overpriced. We stayed in the Penthouse Suite which from the website appeared to give us the premium quality of stay we wanted. The "Penthouse" part of the description you could just about accept, being the third storey of a fairly nondescript suburban house, but the "suite" part is a complete misnomer. This was a double bedroom with and ensuite bathroom and a very cluttered storage cupboard doubling as a walk in wardrobe. In the evening the balcony furniture was too uncomfortable to use for very long and the seating arrangements in the room comprised of two upright chairs.

As mentioned in other reviews Lakeside is part of a suburban development which has lake views but also suburban views so not quite as idyllic as you might first expect , in addition from 7.00 am or so onwards you hear all the domestic sounds of the owners as they prepare for breakfast.

On a positive note the room was clean, the owners friendly and the breakfast very good. If the room had been priced around $220 it would have had a much higher rating and I am sure there must be lots of other places around Taupo where your money could be better spent.

Not what we expected and very overpriced

I could not believe this place! It's description on the internet is totally false. It is an old, cheaply built suburban house, which happens to be located by the lake. It recently had a name change from Paeroa luxury lodge to Acacia Bay lakefront luxury lodge. We have stayed in many backpacker accommodation which is far superior to this place for around NZ$60/night. At NZ$360/night it is an absolute rip off, which is more expensive than the Hilton! Do not be fooled by the internet description. When I arrived I thought the beautiful home next door was where I was going to. What a huge let down. If you want true luxury in Taupo I would suggest you contact the owners of Acacia Bay luxury lodge on Mapara road where we had a delightful stay and value for money.

Wow! What a view across the bay from the room. Beautiful location outside Taupo, ideal base to explore the area. Superb quality B&B. Barbara and John made us most welcome throughout our stay. Highly recommended, a great place to stay.

Lovely stay

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in October 2015. I don't even know where to begin... Our stay was incredible.  As soon as we arrived, John and Barbara greeted us and invited us for tea and muffins. We had no plans at all, showed up late in the day and we were quite unorganized!  Before we knew it, Barbara and John had made us dinner reservation at the most incredible restaurant (we had a fantastic evening), set us up to go fishing in the morning, made a reservation for a jetboat tour at Huka Falls, and a sailboat tour on Lake Taupo. We had an INCREDIBLE day. My husband caught a beautiful rainbow trout and John was kind enough to smoke it for us. We had it for dinner and it was the best thing we have ever had. The following day, John invited Stephen to come upstairs to watch the Rugby semi finals at 4am - it was so nice of them. We truly felt at home.  Barbara made a delicious breakfast each morning and was just so accommodating. They also recommended a flight over the Tongariro National Park the following morning which was another highlight of our trip.  I cannot speak highly enough of this beautiful home with AMAZING views (see my photos).  It is a hidden gem with beautiful gardens. Barbara and John are the sweetest people and we will cherish these memories forever.  Thank you again! 
 
PS: I just cannot believe the negative reviews... I don't want to ever know the people that wrote them. They must live on another planet.  John and Barbara are just wonderful and the house is absolutely beautiful.

Absolutely Stunning Views!

We stayed 5 nights in March in the penthouse room at this property.  It is located across a bay from Taupo (about a 5 minute drive), and the room has fantastic views of the town and mountains.  The room also a balcony, a huge bath with separate shower and large whirlpool tub, and a walk in closet-dressing room.  The home itself is directly on the Lake Taupo with a small beach and beautiful flower gardens. John and Barbara are gracious hosts who shared their extensive knowledge of the local attractions, hikes and restaurants.  They also serve a delicious and large hot and cold breakfast.  We recommend highly staying at Acacia Bay.

Wonderful stay

The Lake Taupo Paeroa is a beautifully raised lake right on Lake Taupo. We spent 3 nights there and felt this as an ideal starting point for trips to the Huka Falls, Wai-O-Tapo Thermal Wonderland and Roturoa. Babsi was a nice hostess, but also very British, just like the furnishings. The living room is a little more furnished, the bathroom is very modern, the bedroom is okay. Everything is very quiet and overlooking the lake.

Paradise lost. Definately. Very over priced in cheaply built house. I am intrigued at gushy comments and suggest very strange!!

Our reservation at Paeroa was made via the internet without reading any reviews from TA - the place looked just perfect - exactly what we were looking for. I exchanged emails with Barbara before booking as we were looking for accommodation over Christmas and wanted to make sure that there would be availability.  She was more than helpful, offering to obtain menus from local hotels / restaurants for us so that we could dine in nice surroundings on Christmas and Boxing Day evenings. Furthermore, she also took the time to explain to the establishments about my husband’s allergy to ensure there wouldn’t be any problems.  We chose our restaurants / menus from the information that Barbara emailed and she then very kindly made reservations for us and arranged deposits on our behalf.  Barbara was so kind and went out of her way to make sure that we were catered for. 
Paeroa is in Acacia Bay, a quiet residential district of Taupo.  We arrived mid-afternoon Christmas Eve and were warmly welcomed by Barbara.  We were shown to our room which was amazing - and didn't disappoint from the web pictures. We had chosen the penthouse suite at the top of the house - mainly for the promised view which overlooked the lake across to Taupo and the mountains beyond.  The room was very tastefully furnished with lovely decor and accessories, flowers from the garden, fresh fruits - and a handful of beautiful scented lavender stems lay on the bed.  Beautiful white bed linens and large soft pillows, a large bathroom with a corner Jacuzzi bath, separate shower and quality towels. There was also a separate dressing room with full length mirror, ample hanging space and luggage storage and a cabinet with an amazing assortment of teas, instant and roasted coffee, cafettiere, kettle, ceramic cups, glasses, milk and biscuits.  Everything was catered for.  While we settled in, Barbara very kindly made us tea and invited us into her sitting room where we were given seasonal pastries as accompaniments.  We met John – Barbara’s lovely husband and the four of us enjoyed a very relaxed hour of conversation where they showed a great interest in our travels. Christmas Day was amazing. John & Barbara were visiting relatives and had told us about their plans when we booked our stay so we were fully aware.  They did however invite us to join them for an early breakfast before they left if we felt so inclined to rise early. However, we had such a comfortable sleep that we missed their departure. Barbara had prepared the most amazing breakfast treats imaginable for us and we enjoyed our ‘feast’ at their dining table – looking out over the beautiful lake and their delightful garden. She had even left a Christmas card and wrapped a little gift for us so that we had a present to open on Christmas morning. A really lovely gesture. Further treats awaited us as Barbara had also prepared a Christmas lunch picnic box which was full of surprises.  We spent our day over at Huka Falls and early afternoon opened up our basket to ooooh’s and aaaah’s and wows.  We had a Christmas blanket and a Christmas tablecloth, crackers with hats and trinkets, pink champagne and the most amazing assortment of foodie treats imaginable.  Rack of lamb prepared just right, salads and accompaniments, breads and garnishes, desserts and pastries and chocolate hearts – our ‘feast’ was admired by many passing our picnic place – it was delicious. Barbara had really done us proud and we had a wonderful wonderful day.  We shared our Boxing Day breakfast with John and Barbara at their table with even more home made treats and discussed our plans for the day.  They gave us more ideas on where to visit, and when I mentioned that I had been considering a helicopter flight, Barbara kindly made enquiries with a local heli-centre for us, and after discussing rates with them, I booked a flight for that afternoon.  It was awesome.
John and Barbara are terrific hosts who open their home to strangers and offer the best of hospitality.  We stayed with them for 4 days and it was the best time of our trip.  We met other members of their lovely family too – all of them genuinely nice people who took the time to talk with us and show an interest in our travels.  We knew before we left home that our stay at Paeroa would be special, but it far exceeded our expectations.  We would not hesitate to return again and would highly recommend Paeroa as a wonderful place to stay. Thank you John & Barbara for making our stay with you so enjoyable – we loved it.
