Terrible customer service!!!! Stayed at Manor House Backpackers on 16-18 November. Upon check in staff made a mistake and I was doubled charged for my stay. I got in touch with the staff multiple times over the last month and I was promised that I will get a refund and a screenshot with the confirmation of payment as soon as possible. I still have not received either a refund or a confirmation.

Don’t stay here

Walked in. People drinking outside playing music. Smelt like pot. Waited 10 minutes to check in. Some absolute characters walking around. Room was terrible, smelt horrible. Only a bottom sheet and a duvet that I doubt was washed. No key to the room. I’d best describe as a homeless shelter. We left straight away and booked somewhere else.

Terrible

Met with friends who were staying there. The place does not appear clean and some of the permanent residents are off putting. There is a smell when you arrive in the front foyer. The building is dated and dark.

Not a great experience.

This place is run worse than a prison. It's a total shambles with owners and staff who continuously get wasted on alcohol and drugs then get violent with each other and the residents. They also do all this in front of their innocent children. Not a business run professionally at all. They don't clean every day including during a level 4 lockdown, there was no cleaning done at all for an entire week during the current level 4 lockdown. The owners can be heard having sex and don't seem to care who hears (including children), it's a sick and twisted environment to be in. It's been run like this for months and it's only getting worse! BEWARE if you stay here, they will be nice to you one minute then turn on you the next and once they turn on you, you're not only kicked out for absolutely no reason but you're also assaulted by the owners and staff. It's about time they started running a business and stop acting like it's a ​party house! The owner and her partner also smoke in there room which they always say is a big no no to other residents.

I highly recommend that you consider staying at one of the many other places Dunedin has to offer. It's only a matter of time before the doors are closed and locked for good when that happens I feel sorry for whoever has decided to stay there for a week or more as you will not get a refund  and you'll be out on the street with nowhere to go like myself, my friend and her two children for absolutely no reason at all. I witnessed first hand the owner combing nits out of one of her kids hair on the front deck. Stay away and stay safe people.

Dangerous, violent, drunken environment

I relocated to Dunedin with my two children. At first Tina Meihana (the owner) seemed lovely and very accommodating but the longer you stay the quicker you realize it's all a front. Regular drinking, pot smoking and violence occurs here and the majority of it is the owners and staff. I was kicked out with my children late at night for simply calling the police out of fear for our safety when one resident assaulted another. While the police were there, Tina ran upstairs and assaulted me in the bedroom, she had already tried breaking down the toilet door to get to me and my injured friend and her ex-Partner (Mason) who is one of the managers, tried grabbing my phone from my hand while I was on a call to the police. The only one who seemed to be reasonable was Tina's partner Maui but unfortunately Tina and Mason were often too drunk to see any sense or acted like it was a high school playground and wouldn't listen to reason. This place is not run like a business at all! On a daily basis they are drinking, smoking pot and getting into verbal and physical arguments with each other as well as the residents (despite Tina being pregnant and having her own young children there she seemed to be the ring leader of the majority of the problems and didn't think twice about assaulting others, male or female). They have not cleaned at all during the level 4 lockdown which means that place could be crawling with all sorts of lethal bacteria. They allow men to walk around exposing themselves in front other residents and children. I am glad to have my children out of that environment, it's not safe for children and I heavily believe Tina shouldn't be a mother if she is to continue carrying on behaving like that! Absolutely appalled!! Surveillance footage has been handed to the police!

Dodgy drunk and dangerous owners/staff

This was the worst backpackers we have ever stayed in. We were woken at 2am and kept awake for hours by drunk people falling all over the place and banging into walls and doors. People smoking in their rooms (supposed to be non-smoking) and the smell seeping out through the walls and into the communal areas. No flooring in the bathroom. Holes in the walls and ceiling letting in a draught.
Couldn't lock the doors from the inside at night, did not feel safe with drunk people around. 
Seems like a doss-house for homeless/unemployed.

Terrible stay

Clean linen, comfy mattress, and a kitchen with all the amenities and breakfast provided.

Localy owned and operated it was nice to enjoy a stay with kiwi hospitality.

I had a few hiccups - a rare error in booking my shuttle left me killing a couple of hours at the airport and my booking of a 4 bed dorm turned into a stay in a 6 bed...

... but on the upside it was a great locale, clean linen and comfy matresses, breakfast provisions were handy; spices and tea/coffee were available, and the staff were firendly and eager to help.

Solid 4/5 from me.  Was happy overall and I'm sure the few hiccups I encountered were rare and circumstantial.

Overall a nice experience despite s few hiccups

As soon as I arrived here I felt very uneasy. There was a group of older men in the garden smoking and although someone  showed me to the room, there was a very unwelcoming atmosphere.  I felt the same in the morning when checking out. This did not come across as a backpackers hostel. As a solo female traveller I felt uncomfortable around these men walking around the shared spaces and additionally there was no lock on the door which I found extremely lacking. The bed and towels were clean and the toilet /shower facilities were fine. The only real positive was lots of nearby free parking and location. I would never stay here again given how uncomfortable and unsafe I felt.
