This is a very well located in the heart of Asmara. The Albergo is very charming and reflective of its Italian past. The service is good and very friendly. Rooms are a little jaded with a few malfunctions but the furnishings are old but beautiful. The restaurant also has charm and the food is good. WiFi is available in the lobby but clearly they are new to this and it too is quirky!  I genuinely enjoyed staying here.

Quirkily colonial

Albergo Italia is a very regal and quaint little hotel in the heart of Asmara. It was refurbished in 2005 so it’s relatively newer than most hotels in that area. 
The location of the hotel makes it Ideal for travelers who want to walk around in the city and see the many beautifully made infrastructures ... like the cathedral, the cinema Roma .... 
P.S- it’s incredibly safe walking around the town at any given time.

Beautiful country

I hesitated between Albergo Italia and the Asmara Palace, but decided to book at Albergo Italia because of its central location, and the fact that it seemed to be more authentic given the Italian background...

Booking was a matter of calling them on the phone and giving them my dates and name.. That's it, no guarantee, no confirmation. The website reservations link does not work, and they no longer receive e-mail...

Here is what the negatves were (and thus why I am not sure that it is the better option of the 2 I considered):
- Wifi does NOT work. They told me it does not work with iPhone... Well, everyone sort of has an iPhone these days, and in any case, it did not work with my laptop either. FOortunately, there is a Internet Cafe right next door (Olympia) with decent wifi (I managed to download approx 5mb in 20min of browsing) - the wifi can be accessed from the Alabergo lobby, but definitely not from most rooms..
- Breakfast options were... Omelette (no cereal, no yoghurt, no fruit. 
- Bathroom was disappointing (only one light bulb worked, and overall, everything felt old. I read about a renovation that took place about 10yrs ago, I don't think the bathrooms were the renovated part.

The positives: 
- The service was very good (wish some of the receptionists spoke better english, we needed to call the supervisor on the phone for the receptionist to understand that I needed a Taxi to go to the Tank Graveyard). 
- The location: You can walk pretty much anywhere.

Is this relly the best in Asmara?

While this property is a heritage building and comes with an air of history and lot of character, dont expect a lot of creature comforts at this place. The AC barely works, rooms are a bit tired and service is old school. But it is a great value for money given its great location

LOCATION: Excellent location, right in the heart of old town and close to all key points of interest

DINE + DRINK: A Lovely Bar at the lobby level with an Art Deco 30’s classic feel.  Great for a quick drink before heading out. Restaurant is not bad either

ROOM: I stayed in 202, so this review is based on that; VIEW: Random limited City view; SIZE: reasonably spacious room; AIR-CON: Lousy Air conditioner that barely worked!!; BED: Comfortable bed that played the expected part to put me to sleep; BATHROOM: Very dated bathroom, with NO Hot water and painfully slow showerhead!; TOILETRIES: Poor Quality, do bring your own!

FACILITIES:Be prepared to get into a pure African chill-out mode! No Gym or pool on site

SERVICE: Friendly staff that took care of all my needs with a smile and made us feel pampered and well taken care of. 

HOW WIRED YOU WILL BE:  WIFI is a joke here and never works (even not possible to post an instagram pic without spending 10 minutes staring at the device) and the Television set is old school CRT box with barely any channels in English to watch. Time to Unplug and Unwire!!

Heritage Hotel with Spartan comfort

When I arrived late at night, there was no water. When I woke up, the 1 hour water supply window was already gone. Nobody had told me on check-in.
The TV set doesn't work at all.
The wifi doesn't work at all.
When I asked if I could get a late check out (having arrived at 3 a.m.) I was told the best I could get was 12 o'clock (the standard check out time).
When I asked a doorman about directions, he asked me for a tip.
Save yourself the trouble, spend a bit more, and go to the Asmara Continental. 
Or straight to a cheap hotel. 
The USD 100 for the Albergo Italia is a rip-off even for African standards.
Breakfast or other food is more expensive here than at the Asmara Continental.

No water, no wifi, no TV, no service

Locals and staffs are best. I picked up some Italian through copious nos of movies. Got to use here. Extremely overpriced. Amenities non-existent. Silly breakfast. Just awful stay/food/hotel. Staffs are brilliant.
