I stayed at the IHSP as a dorm guest for 3 days, when they were full, they told me they had a guest house near State Street. However, it was sold out as well. I checked later that day and found an available room on line and booked it. I was so very happy. Mostly that it was one block from State Street where all the restaurants, shops and bars are. It was cheap too! compared to hotels in that area ( over 300 a night) I had a single private room with a shared bath for $65!! They had a free breakfast which was pretty good and internet wifi. Cant complain. The place seemed new, like fresh smelling. Another guest told me opened just 3 weeks prior. 
Warning to the traveler, the reception is at the IHSP building and only breakfast staff is at this one, but great all the same

The IHJP house on De La Vina Street provided bagels in the mornings, and there was also a laundry service available for a reasonable fee.  Most welcome was the AC that was in my room, as the temperatures outside were getting pretty warm in the latter-half of August.  
This location is so close to everything interesting in Santa Barbara; the hub of activity, State Street, is a short 2-block walk away, the main bus transit station is only 3 blocks away, the Amtrak train station is a reasonable 6 blocks walking distance, and the waterfront is only 2 blocks beyond the train station. 
For those student travellers who depend on kitchen facilities to cook their own meals, this place won't meet their needs, but I really enjoyed visiting the local restaurants during my stay.
Santa Barbara can be very expensive, especially for budget-conscious students, so finding IHJP was such a relief!

Great location!

Great Location!

It was clean, the room we ate breakfast in was nice and it was in a good location. 

BUT

When we arrived at the hostel there was a sign on the door saying something along the lines of the reception is at their sister hostel a few minutes’ drive away. There was a phone number to ring but they have omitted the international dialling code, which we didn't realise at the time, so we just presumed that the number didn't work. We drove round to the sister hostel and checked in. The lady on reception had already taken full payment for the room on my credit card before we arrived! She also told us they'd emailed me that morning to say we had to check in at the different location. I checked my emails and they actually hadn't, but even if they had this would have been too late as we were on the road all day without access to wifi. I would suggest that this information is included in the booking confirmation email. 

We had booked a room with shared bathroom, but this was still one of the most expensive hotels on our 2-week trip of California (only exceeded by hotels around Yosemite were we had a spa bath in the room!) For well over £100 for one night we slept in bunk beds in a room where the main light didn't work, and at breakfast the cleaning lady dusted the stairs into my boyfriend's cup of coffee. 

If we'd paid £30 or even £50 I wouldn't mind - it is a hostel after all, but over £100? Seriously?  Santa Barbara is a lovely place to visit but IHSP have exploited the high price of accommodation in the area and are providing hostel standard accommodation for palatial prices with really poor service. There are loads of places to stay in Santa Barbara in just as good locations – I’m sure you can do better than IHSP.
