Really lovely pub and restaurant in the heart of Lydford in Dartmoor with great walking the moor and also Lydford Gorge (National Trust waterfall.  Superb Sunday lunch with all locally sourced produce (Taste of the West gold hospitality winner 2023) and great service from a hard working team, including real attention to detail.   Can’t recommend enough.   The team work hard to make this special!  And it is!

Superb lunch with friendly service in this beautiful and characterful Dartmoor pub. Fires blazing in the hearth and great selection of local ales and craft lagers. Picturesque village with lots of history. We will be back!

We had a lovely stay. We stayed in the building opposite the pub and would definitely recommend those rooms. They are kitted out to a high standard. Great location and breakfast. Loved the extra touches like homemade cookies. Hope to visit again.

Having just spent two nights at the castle Inn, I can highly recommend, very cosy, and a very warm welcome. Our room well equipped with everything. Fresh milk delivered outside your bedroom door at 7 in the morning. We also booked our evening meal with them. Food hot and first class. Nothing to much trouble. Breakfast cooked to perfection full Devonshire highly recommend sets you up for the day. Chole checked us in and checked us out when we left, plus served us at meal times along with the rest of the lovely staff. I have to say Chole very professional and so very pleasant. Thank you all for our lovely stay and looking forward to coming again. Keep up the good work. 

Friends and I had a thoroughly nice one night stay. We were greeted with a very warm welcome and thoughtful touches like being handed fresh milk for the room which was replenished in the morning. The rooms and beds were very comfortable and clean and the food was very good indeed. A varied and interesting menu and we enjoyed an excellent evening meal. We went horse riding the next morning at Cholwell stables at Mary Tovy - only 10 minutes away and also highly recommended. After a lovely ride across the moors we came back to the Castle for lunch which gave the option of the full menu or reasonably priced lighter options, also extremely good. We will certainly be back and appreciated the very friendly and helpful staff. A first rate experience all round.

A country inn with lovely staff and a great atmosphere. There was a warm welcome from the hospitable staff who were very helpful and obviously know the meaning of the word hospitality. We loved the pub-style food. We would highly recommend it.

Such a comfortable bed, such a lovely welcome, such great food. A large quiet garden with an extensive covered area.  Convenient parking.
Lots of walks nearby and so kind and friendly to our small dog.

Had a wonderful experience at the Castle Inn!   Easy to access free parking, chanting staff, lovely room and delicious food.   We particularly appreciated the included continental AND hot breakfast.  Truly felt like we were staying in (inn?) a bit of history.

After wanting to stay at this Inn forever, finally had a chance for a last-minute short getaway. We had two rooms and both were fabulous. The rooms have been updated to be so cozy whilst keeping the original charm of the 15th century inn. After a busy touring day having a soak in the deep bath with top notch bath products was a dream. The bed was super comfy with soft warm covers/pillows. We enjoyed dinner in a cozy corner of the old pub ... and savored a 2.5 hour experience that was made perfect by fabulous staff and amazing food. Standouts were venison and salmon ... seriously the best seared salmon I think I've ever had anywhere on earth! Breakfast was enjoyed in the other side of the pub and they had an interesting selection of choices and again, we savored it with great coffee and conversation before heading out to another day or "mooring!" I'm from the states and seriously this could not have been a better match for my "dream inn/pub" stay but my English family members also loved this place to bits. We cannot wait to return although next time hopefully at a dryer time of year when we can do the Lydford Gorge walk. We've done it a few times but it was closed due to weather/rain during the winter. Already looking forward to my next visit to Dartmoor and this fabulous inn. 

Fantastic overnight stay at the Castle Inn, in Lydford. Built in 1550, this place makes you feel like you've gone back in time. The food for both dinner & breakfast and the service were top notch. The ambience was perfect. We will  definitely head back soon.

We stayed here for one night. The food was very tasty, we had an evening meal and breakfast. The whole building is well decorated for such an old building. The staff were friendly. Our only disappointments were the heating in the room which only had one radiator so it was rather chilly. The main issue though was the shower. It kept going between hot and cold so you couldn't stay in it. As breakfast we realised we weren't the only people with the shower issue. If it wasn't for these issues we would of given it five stars.

A lovely find - great in all respects

I stayed at The Castle while travelling down from Bristol to Cornwall - it was a last-minute booking (literally, booked by phone about an hour before I arrived!) On arrival I had a very warm welcome and was shown to my room (Room 5). 

The room was perfect for me travelling solo and would be fine for a couple. The bathroom is tiny - literally a shower and toilet, with the basin in the room, but absolutely adequate for my needs. It was lovely to have the old exposed beams and little touches like freshly ground coffee and a cafetiere (rather than horrible instant coffee!), fresh milk delivered in the morning (again, rather than horrible UHT!), a Smart TV, and Bramley products were all nice touches and not "expected".

The best thing about The Castle, though, is the atmosphere, food, and drink downstairs. I was seated in the "snug" for dinner, which was lovely and cosy (I would probably have preferred to be in the restaurant or even the bar, but given I was a very last minute booking, I was just pleased to be able to eat when I wanted to, as the pub was quite busy).

I had a couple of pints of Jail Ale (well kept) and the Steak and Jail Ale pie, followed by the cheese (some really nice local cheeses). The food was brilliant - the steak pie was beautiful, and among the best I've had. The staff were friendly and attentive (without being obtrusive), and being in the snug, I didn't feel bad that I was sitting there reading my book!) Yes the prices are reasonably high - but this is definitely not "pub grub" - it's a good balance between good value for money and really great food.

Breakfast in the morning was equally delicious and a very generous Full Devon Breakfast (it made me laugh that the eggs were Cornish - I guess Lydford's not far from the border!) 

I ate here about five years ago and haven't been back since (just due to circumstances - nothing they did wrong!), and I can honestly say I will be back sooner this time!

A gem of an inn

Best Inn in all of England! 

What a fantastic place.  
Cosy rooms, friendly and attentive staff, delicious breakfasts, chatty locals and they welcome the four legged members of family too!
Initially booked for 2 nights, but didn't want to leave so we managed to book a 3rd.
A massive thank you to the whole team for making our stay so wonderful, it was a real treat to see everyone so happy in their roles.
We will be back in Spring to walk more of Tors

At last we found a perfect country inn

Stayed here a year ago and returned at the weekend for a 2 night stay. Everything was even better than before. The rooms were absolutely beautiful and spotlessly clean, as if no one had stayed before us. The staff were all soo lovely and friendly. Dogs are soo welcomed in every area. The food is literally incredible vegan options really thought out and so delicious. The bar, cosy and a has a lovely atmosphere. Breakfast amazing. 
We literally cannot fault a single thing. This is without a doubt our fave spot to revisit. Thanks Castle Inn team.

Beautiful atmospheric lovely pub in a nice village on edge of Dartmoor, lots of
History on the  doorstep, we only spent one night here as travelling back off hols, it was a good choice,  well looked after , pleasant staff , food good I had a homemade pie that was beautiful , partner had a steak , nice maybe a little  expensive , great cheeseboard ! lovely room (number 10) only issue that floor very creaky in room
Above , and people staying above appeared to move about a lot ! If we had been staying for longer we would have asked to move rooms, this was mentioned on checking out , would definitely go back but wouldn’t stay in room 10 ,

Great little pub

This was our second time at the Castle Inn. Having both stayed in the hotel and ate at the restaurant numerous times during both stays. 
Firstly I must mention the hotel - well the rooms are simply stunning with an extra comfy bed in a spacious room, deluxe bathroom and so many little extras from luxury toiletries to freshly made shortbread biscuits delivered to our room daily along with a jug of fresh milk. To me, these are perfect touches. 
We ate a beautiful breakfast each day and the selection was plentiful with everything prepared fresh and cooked to order. In the evenings we sampled a selection of meals on the menu and I must say my favourites by far was the beef pie and fish and chips. Absolutely gorgeous! Desserts were right up our street with jam roly poly and fruit crumbles to die for. 
The owners Jared and Hannah are probably the nicest, most genuine people we have ever met and welcomed us warmly. We would like to thank all the staff at the Castle for making our stay perfect, especially housekeeping who kept our room pristine each day and to the talented chefs for their delicious food. We will be back again soon!
