Hotel & Lounge by Hyve Basel SBB

I stayed overnight as I could not catch a train in time to reach further connections. I wanted a safe, clean, inexpensive place to sleep so opted for a bed in a female dorm. 3 bunkbeds The room was full so I was allotted an upper bunk.! The room was simple with a separate larger than usual washbasin and a wooden shelf/seat to sit on to take shoes off etc. Large lockable individual lockers. My bunk was very comfortable. Clean sheets and good duvet. I also had an individual reading light and plugs. There was also a USB charger point. The beds all had solid wooden safety boards to stop anyone falling out and individual blinds for privacy. These could be rolled up and down which was heloful as it did tend to get a little warm during the summer night. Windows all had outside slat blinds and inside a generous ledge. They were the European type that open wide or just at the top. Lighting in the room was fine. The entrance area (washbasin, lockers and seating ) had a light and there were other bright ones over the basin. The sleeping area also had a central hanging lamp. I found the privacy I had with the blind down very good. There were six rooms on the 3rd floor, two female toilets, two male, and two showers which were mixed usage. Other rooms may have had their own bathrooms as the are various options available. The place was full when I was there so I didn’t have the luxury of choosing. The hostel/apartments is situated 3-4 minutes from the main station down a quiet safe well lit street. The tram 16 runs from there into the old city so it really is well located. You receive a Basel transport card for the length of stay to use on public transport so that is free. Discounts st some museums too. The school opposite the Hyve was on holiday so it may be noisier at other times, but then who’s in during the day if you are staying here? It had an small outside sitting area the front. A good size shared kitchen can be used which has all mod cons. Micro, oven, fridge and all utensils. There is also an outdoor sitting area with deck chairs open only until 9pm as voices carry up into the rooms. My room only opened with a keycard. Eating area is large and bright. I did find the prices for items sold no different from other cafes. 5 chf for a cappuccino is a bit steep for a hostel. Breakfast was a choice if three options. I had the granola, yoghurt and some cut fresh fruit. Coffee/tea/ juice - at will. 12.50 chf - quite expensive. But you can buy your own from outside and keep it all in the kitchen too. There is a grocer with fresh fruit 2 minutes from the Hyve. There is a locked luggage room and you can leave bags in there if you arrive early or leave late. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. All in all the Hyve fulfilled my expectations and was good value. It was clean, airy, nicely furnished (someone else posted pics) and is in a great location for the whole city. There were families here with young children but it was never loud and during the night it was extremely quiet. The front door is locked at night and has a keypad in addition to being able to use the room keycard. I’d recommend it as a hostel, as that is the part I used. I can’t say anything about the apartments/private rooms. I enjoyed the short time there.
