Yaxkin Hostel-Palenque

I was in this hostel for 2 nights. It has a good relationship regarding price/quality. The only thing I didn't know about and I would like knowing is that it has not air conditioner and Palenque is a really hot place.

Stayed one night with a friend, had to share a matrimonial bed because they said it was full, but didn’t see a lot of other costumers ....
The bed are not really comfy, the common bathroom not really clean, the shared space is not really convivial. Seams like an hostal with a lot of unused potential. 
But the price is okay ...

One night stay, not convinced 

El temazcal is an intense experience, a necessary healing, a ritual. the jade cafeteria offers drinks with regional ingredients and healthy food. there are rooms that are economical but the place is of prime, good vibe.

The theme is spiritual.

I arrived at the hostel and since I made only good experiences on my trip so far I checked in at the Yaxkin-Hostel and paid the rest of the fee for the 3 nights that I was going to spend there in a single room with shared bathrooms. The guy from the reception then showed me to my room. On the way to the room he showed me the shower/toilet-area which was looked and you needed the key to get in. The room was very very small and there was an unconfortable bed with sheets that looked like an old curtain. What surprised me the most was the door didnt really lock or even if it was locked it could be pushed open with very little force. 
I then decided that I wasnt going to stay there and looked online for other options (found a small but very nice hotel nearby with private bathroom, ac and breakfast included for almost just a 3-4 dollars more). When I found the new place I went to the same guy who just checked me in a 10 min ago, and asked politely and fully aware that I wouldnt get all my money back,if we could find a solution. I offered to pay the first night and the 10% from the reservation for nights 2&3. Since I wasnt going to occupy the room they would have had the possibility to rent it out again right away. But the guy just looked down on me, grinned and said: "Cancelations are not possible anymore". Haven't been treated like this anywhere else in Mexico (or anywhere else on my travels) - horrible dont go there!
Apart from my throughout experience its way overpriced and the only good feature in my opinion is that is within walking distance to the ADO bus station.

As far as Latinoamericano hostels go, pretty standard. A little expensive for an 8 bed dorm but pretty surroundings. Felt a little disrespected because I arrived before check-in, and dead tired from travel; My supposed dorm was empty but I did not refute and waited the few hours until noon check-in. This morning a person arrived to my dorm at 5am which was disruptive but also annoying because of the double standard. So I started my day at 5am this morning and am still dead tired. I guess they pick and choose whom they like to be nice to. Good job guys!!!

Nice place. Weird rules

For the price and the large park surrounding the hostel, I would definitely recommend it. Still it would improve the living room with more amenities and lighting. Since in 2019 wifi is a problem, it's something so simple to fix that it shouldn't be named.

When we first arrived the hostel seems very new and up to date with a modern reception area. However as soon as we were shown to our dorms (and told to make our own beds) we realised this only went as far as the reception area. The shower and toilet in the dorm smelt awful from the water. We didn’t actually use the shower for the 3 days we were here as it was so disgusting. The towels we were given were smaller than tea towels so not ideal when in a dorm with other people. Thankfully we could rely on the surrounding waterfalls to freshen up! Additionally on our first night a member of staff came into our dorm at 11pm (everyone was sleeping) and started shouting my name until we eventually all woke up to let us know we had to pay for our room the following day. Overall, this is not a comfortable place to stay and the WiFi (which only reaches a tiny area in reception) is awful. We wish we had taken the other bad reviews more seriously. After 8 months of staying in hostels throughout south/Central America - this is one of the worst.

Disgusting showers and untrained staff 

A low-cost hostel than you pay for, facilities can be improved with little budget, the community kitchen is spacious and quite equipped and the environment is relaxed. The staff is quite friendly and very well located.

Basic but improving.

I was really disappointed from this hostel, the bed springs were visible and the mattress was so used, that I woke up with back-ache (I had better sleep time when I was in ADO buses). The hygiene was terrible.

Worst experience in Mexico

I stayed four nights in this hostel. It‘s a good place if you want to hang out a little bit after a long travel (e.g from Merida or San Cristóbal), and also, as Palenque in general, a good base to do day tours to Aguas Azul or other hidden gems in the region. Dorms don‘t have AC, but many fans. Comfortable beds. A bit disturbing is the mixture of music, especially in the evening, as sounds from up to three different locations interfere (But the fact that also every shop plays it’s music in town is a local flavour here in Palenque). Directly attached to a coffee place called Cafe Jade (Also recommendable). Friendly and helpful staff in both places. Checkout is at 12am. At last: Separating biodegradable „waste“, i.e. compost, is a concept that unfortunately still does not exist here (But that‘s completely the norm in southern Mexico. Everything goes together in one bin).
