Our stay at the Outspan was unforgettable. The grounds are lovely, the rooms are spacious and well appointed, the restaurant and common areas are warm and welcoming with beautiful wood accents and old world architecture. Mostly though, the staff was so friendly, attentive, and professional. Of particular note was our private tour of Paxtu, the Baden Powell home and museum. Our guide, Benson, who curates and cares for the museum was very well-informed and personable. He took a lot of time sharing information about the history of the Outspan and Paxtu with us. His love of the place and its history shone through. It was a highlight of our stay. Thank you to everyone at the Outspan for making our stay so wonderful.

Advice to Tripadvisor: Extend the timespan!

My parents were posted to Aden and we went to Kenya on vacation.
We stayed here. 
My dad was amazed by all the greenery and flowers as almost nothing grows in Aden. He took dozens of slides of flowers and trees.

The Outspan hosted a 5 day training session and 3 day business conference in April 2019.    The staff and management were outstanding--in 25 years of travel in Kenya--they did the best job of anyone.   From the day we arrived until the day we left (14 days) every member of the staff checked on our stay and what they could do to make it more comfortable and enjoyable.   It seems daily the staff enquired how they could better serve and if there was anything that we needed.    Even, fussed at us for doing things that they were responsible for.   The food quality and service is outstanding.   The morning breakfast chefs cooked exactly like we asked.   
The property is older: but I like this.    Large rooms, fireplace (which actually comes in very nice at night), roomy bathroom, and excellent laundry staff.   The rooms were kept clean.   Comfortable beds. The staff is very trustworthy.  
The five star is compared to what is available in the area and what we have used in the past.  
I highly recommend the Outspan.    We have already booked for our next conference and trip.

Immediately you get to the gate you see the grounds are so amazing, tall trees that are really calming, and I bet they are very old, there are some trees that are over 100 years. They are well-maintained. At the reception, the information is very clear and you are given a nice choice of rooms. We choose Chania as the rooms overlook the trees and the areas seems quiet & cold- Don’t worry they will light up a fire in the room and make it nicely warm. 
The service in the restaurant is impeccable thanks to the lady Frenicent who really knows how to make you comfortable while ordering, she is patient and understands what you ask for.  The dinner portions (all the 4 courses) are good and they are made to your satisfaction. The rooms are serene and in no time you it is morning again and you will be woken up by bird chirping and you really don’t need an alarm. After the shower- the showerhead is not so good, breakfast is well set in the greenery and the views are fantastic on a good day you will see Mount Kenya and its peaks. High chances after breakfast you will most likely not need to have lunch, very filling & tasty. 
Not to be missed is a visit to “PAXTU” the house where Lord Baden Powell lived for his final years on earth. Even if you were not a scout or a former scout you will appreciate the simple life of this man yet he had such a high impact in the lives on many men including mine.  The history in this halo ground with leave you speechless! Don’t forget to sign the visitor’s book. Thank you to all the scouts who have left a lot of memorabilia over the years. 
In a nutshell, Great place, with great staff & great food, worth all the money that we paid. Will be back!

Our check-in and lunch was at the Outspan Hotel. We reached before noon, the receptionist was very welcoming and allowed us to explore the place before lunch was served which was at 12.30 p.m. The place is nice, peaceful and quiet. Staff are friendly.  The food is buffet and amazing, for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

We reached the hotel before time. We were welcomed and allowed to enjoy the scenery around and other facilities. Lunch usually begins at 12 30pm but because we got there early it was ready by 12 noon. This was good so we could leave for treetops early.

Outstanding Staff, Beautiful Grounds, and Great Dining

Historical Hotel, Green environment & very comfortable. In a nutshell, Great place, with great staff & great food!

Stop over for lunch before treetops

The grounds of this place are beautiful.  Built in typical British style but showing signs of age.  Older decorations, carpets and fixtures in the room.  Very peaceful and still worth a stay just don't expect fancy,  bright white perfection.
My room didn't have a safe and only the old style skeleton key to lock the doors. 
The dinner was not good.  I also realized they were waiting for me to finish the entree completely before bringing the rest of dinner.  When it came I took to my room because it took so long. It was not very good and I ended up not eating much. 
Breakfast was much better and I recommend sitting outside listening to the birds early in the morning. 

Beautiful hotel but showing it's age

I have been visiting this hotel since I was a child and over they years the thing that continues to draw my family back are the beautiful grounds and the gorgeous view of Mount Kenya. I have to sadly say though that the hotel doesn’t seem to be what it was. They have some very modern rooms one of which we stayed in but when our party expanded we were put in a room that was still in 1950. Some of the lights were not working the carpet was dank and the shower was inoperable. We noticed that the hotel is doing brisk business with Chinese tourists but when they leave it is otherwise empty.

We also visited the tree tops branch in Aberdares national park and it also isn’t in its former glory.  We made the most of both experiences.

Grounds still gorgeous

We stayed here for three nights at Outspan. Nyeri was previously our hometown in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The hotel was then managed by Block Hotels. I remember, the service, the maintenance, the food and hospitality was simply outstanding then, which could not be matched. The cakes and scones were simply out of the world. 

We regret coming back here. The service, the standards, food and hospitality have completely fallen. The property and gardens are spectacular but poorly managed.  The electrics are in a bad state as one of our team members nearly got electrocuted. The food served was to a very poor standard. The showers didn’t work and had to go with drippings. Housekeeping was just as bad. The Restaurant, the service, the food was absolutely pathetic. 

It’s simply badly managed. If I were to manage, I would restore it to its original glory in respect of service and world class hospitality. There is so much scope. 

Regrettably, I cannot recommend this hotel as it’s not value for money.
