This is a cosy and quiet B&B tucked away in San Jose. The owner is incredibly friendly and helpful, whilst all the staff are cheerful, polite and accommodating. I would definitely stay here again as very good value for money.

I love this hotel, peacefull, quite and very Hemingwayesque if you like, you can almost feel his presence, I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

We really enjoyed our stay here.  Dennis and Romi were fantastic.  We got great recommendations for dining and tours from Romi and Dennis.  The breakfast was great each day.  It included juice, coffee, gallo pinto, eggs, toast, and fruit. While I was here I overheard the statement that this hotel isn't for everybody.  I agree with this.  If you are expecting luxury accommodations at this price you will be disappointed.  However, what it lacks in luxury, it really makes up for in hospitality.  Staying here is an experience.  One of the best parts is that the guests were all so interesting and friendly.  There were many opportunities to chat with guests in the courtyard over breakfast or coffee at any other time during the day.  Socially, this was the best experience of our visit.  Obviously, this can vary based on the guests at any given time, but I do think this place attracts people who are a bit more social and adventurous and not so stuffy. We were really lucky to be invited a birthday dinner at the hotel during our stay.  The food was the best we had during our stay in San Jose, and it was so nice of the family to include us. The downside is that the location makes it a bit noisy at times.  If this is a concern I would recommend not staying in the rooms facing the busy road.  Room 1 has a great shower though, so this makes up for it.

I stayed 3 nights in this characterful arty gem of a family run hotel - a beautiful cooked to order breakfast and relaxing garden, older but clean and interestingly decorated rooms and helpful friendly staff. Super central with lots of eating and shopping nearby and very safe/secure (although taxis are best at night). A comfortable and clean room for the price.

Nice place. Rooms were large, had wardrobe for storage, a safe, large bathroom, tv. No AC though but didn't need it as it was cool. Breakfast had 3 options: pancakes, eggs and toast, or eggs and rice. Reception was friendly. Location is about 5-10 min walk from central ave. Was a little loud in the morning through the windows with regular noise (cars, dogs, birds, people) as we had to have the window open for air, but that's expected noise from the streets. Overall nice.

I booked 6 nights when travel to costa rica. I m so glad I made a right choice. The hotel location is perfect. In center of the town. The staff are very friendly. Helpful. Every day helped me to contact my tour company to confirm. I have recommended this place to my friends. And I will be back hopefully soon! Love it!

Super cute little place! The taxi driver did warn us not to go out alone late at night but there were no problems we could see during our stay.

Definitely not 4 star, but a great character and nice setting even though it's right downtown.  Awesome breakfast and very friendly staff.  Will definitely stay there again.  Comfortable beds, hot showers.  Cooked to order eggs/fruit/pancakes for breakfast.  Coffee 24/7.

What a nice surprise happening upon this place. Friendly, accommodating staff. A nice little bar, a very good breakfast, laundry service. I don't know if they serve any other meals. I was out seeing San Jose. But, when I was there I felt more at home than in a hotel. It's an old building with a colorful history. If you don't like an occasional creaky floor of the minor quirks of an older building, think twice. But, you'll miss a nice experience.

Ive stayed here many times ,its almost like a bed & breakfast,,and I always feel at home.The area is very interesting,with older coffee owners houses,there is alittle bit of history here.All the rooms are different but clean and always friendly employees.The hotel is safe at night,but be careful if you are out late at night!

Old coffee estate

Old place that could use some upgrading but it is in a fantastic location in the best part of the city with coffee houses, restaurants, bakeries, etc very near by. I booked it because it was the best price in town and then found out it included a complete breakfast. Incredible really. It is on a busy street so the rooms facing the front are kind of noisy so if you are a light sleeper maybe pay a few dollars more for a quiet room. The bad reviews on here are by people who expected a $150 room for $40. Numbskulls. the place is clean and the people who work there are helpful and friendly. The only thing missing is upgrading the mattresses and a decorators touch. Oh, and if you plan on getting to know the best area of the city, Barrios Amon, Otoya, there is probably no safer hotel.

Good value for the money

We like staying in historical places and this one was great. Management was great as was the breakfast. We were on a room next to the street so it was noisy compared to our jungle home in Las Tumbas. The owner was very nice and spent time with us at breakfast.Bed could have been a little softer seems like I could feel the strings.

History and Service

The Hemingway is a really cool, eclectic, and comfortable place with lots of charm.  The place is run by Dennis and his family and they do a great job making everyone feel like their place is more like home than a hotel. The breakfast each morning is amazing.  Great location!  Great value for the price!  I will definitely stay again!

Comfortable and quaint

Several tourist attractions, museums and shopping, nearby. Hotel is situated in an area close to the Zoo, giving it a semi gentrified feel. Rooms are smallish, but adequate.  Bathroom in my area was large and clean. A missing feature was a closet or Anwar, there was no place to hang up clothing. Bed was large and comfortable.

I stayed at the Hemingway Inn from September 11 to September 26, 2016 which is considered the off season because of increased rainfall but this did not cause me any real problems because almost like clockwork the rain nearly always fell for an hour or two in the afternoon with the mornings and evenings usually clear. Since many of the tourist points of interest in San Jose, such as the jade museum, are in walking distance of the Hemingway I saw no need spend a lot of money taxis. Also if you take the time to familiarize yourself with the public transit you can save a lot of money.  For example, you can take a public transit bus from Alajuala bus terminal in downtown San Jose to the Juan Santamaria international airport for 535 colones (equivalent to about one US dollar) instead of spending 15 or more dollars on a taxi.In addition to local attractions in San Jose I took a number of day excursions such a rainforest tours (hiking with rainforest guide, ziplining, aerial trams) which usually included a good buffet lunch and sometimes a buffet breakfast depending on the length of the tour.  Other tours such as the Baldi hot springs, the Poas volcano and coffee plantations, or a short riverboat cruise where I saw crocodiles, monkeys and sloths I arranged through local tour operators during my stay in San Jose.  All of these day excursions included pick up and drop off at the Hemingway Inn.

A quirky budget gem in the city center!

I stayed at the Hemingway Inn for four nights and was delighted in its Key West feel.  The staff was very friendly. The free breakfast (3 choices: pancakes, eggs and toast, and Gallo Pinto with eggs and toast) was hearty and cooked to order. The room was very clean and the shower always had hot water. Truly a good value for the money.  And I will stay there again. As a solo woman traveler, I always felt safe there. It is situated in Barrio Amon, a section of San Jose that boasts great restaurants (check out Zero Army across the street and La Criollita just a couple of blocks away) and architecture.
