Amazing view from the sea house and if you like sleeping with spiders this is the place to be! Additionally smelly rooms and noisy between the rooms. Good location if you need to catch the early ferry back to the mainland. I would not stay there again!

Once a royal residence, the pension Fridhem, offers guests a whiff of a grander lifestyle in the late 19th century. A couple of stately rooms have been kept seemingly intact since HRH Princess Eugenie’s days and the guest rooms have been refurbished to maintain a ’belle epoque meets Swedish seaside pension’ feeling.

Breakfasts are adequate and staff friendly and discreet. Take breakfast outdoors and admire the spectacular vista of the sea and cliffs around the bay. 

There is a lovely pebble beach where the sun sets beautifully on clear days. The evening light is divine. Fridhem only serves breakfast. Bring your own meal (we had take-away pizza and wine) and dine on the beach as the sun is setting.

There is a coffee shop next to the beach in season.

The distance to Visby is only 20 minutes or so by bicycle. Fridhem offers rental bikes to its guests. We opted for the electric ones which made the ride in to the city and back effortless and fun.

Lilla Bjers farm restaurant offers fine dining only a short bike ride away (make sure to book to avoid disappointment) and Nygårds herrgård next to Fridhem has lamb fleeces and local produce to sell.

You should see this as a unique opportunity to stay in a relatively unspoilt and interesting building in a scenic spot by the sea. The place bears some signs of having been used as a YMCA guest house for many years. Upkeep of the building and gardens is not immacculate and the place ”has great potential”, but it is a charming place. Remember that It is a guesthouse and not a hotel and you will not be disappointed.

Unique historic building in beautiful setting

We were lucky enough to have a room in the main building with sea view. It was especially romantic at sunset. The flowery garden and the beachside café are real assets. For the rest we were disappointed by the level of service. The reception was particularly cold. The breakfast buffet was very limited in the canteen version. This shocked us compared to other hotels or bnb where we were received. Finally the main building would need to be maintained. So yes we slept in the residence of a princess but the price ratio is not.

It's a beautiful setting, but a disappointing performance.

I booked the accommodation because I wanted to make my husband happy and I didn't understand that it wasn't a hotel, but rather a worse youth hostel - so as to the standard. We stayed two nights at Fridhem's boarding house and paid about 1500 SEK a night. I can't even say how disappointed I was when we arrived. I guess it's partly my fault too, and I didn't understand that it's more of a worse youth hostel - so as to the standard. I know some Swedish vending houses and I have to say that many of them are still much longer and cheaper.

The only good thing is the view.

Based on the photos we took while planning our trip on the Internet, we decided to book a room in Fridhems Pension for the last two days of our Gotland trip. After a week we were self-service in a nice cottage with a real hotel feel, the historical ambience and the great location. The only thing that didn't disappoint me was the great location. The building is in a parking lot right by the sea. From the balcony you can enjoy beautiful sunsets in the right weather. So the fulfilled expectations... now to the disappointments. The hotel is already giving you a slightly unpretentious impression of a pencil that moves forward from the outside. Lots of lost potential

This historic mansion will blow some visitors away - the public spaces really give a flavor of staying at the summer mansion of a princess, and setting in a park facing the Baltic sea is unique. Others will complain about the simple and dated standard of the bedrooms. It's really all in your head - romantic and rustic at the same time. I like bringing friends with a taste for unique environments here, they are always intrigued that such a place exists.

Great for the atmosphere

Old stile charming pension outside of Visby town located in a nice large garden area directly at the Baltic Sea. Rooms are also rented out at neighboring annexes. Walking distance to traditional mainbuilding up to 5 minutes. Fast Wifi, breakfast buffet offers enough choices. Don’t expect hotel service. Rooms are cleaned maybe on request only. Did not check it out as my stay was only 4 days.

Nice stay in Gotland

We booked at Fridhem 3 months before our planned holiday at Gotland. We booked through Gotland Promotion, and I will advise you to avoid booking through them if you plan to stay at Fridhems. A cancellation fee (avbestâllningsskydd) of SEK 295 might mislead you to think that you can cancel your booking without further costs, but this is not the case. When cancelling 2 months before our planned stay, we still had to pay 10% of the original sum. Never experienced this before.

Not through Gotland Promotion

While I did not stay at the pension, I want to highlight the delightful cafe located on the same grounds. The view of the Baltic Sea is very nice, and there is ample seating both inside and outside.

We had coffee and pastries there on a lovely summer afternoon. Coffee was good and refills were free. The friendly staff can fix you a saffron pancake with jam and whipped cream (a specialty on Gotland), crispy waffles, or apple cake with ice cream. Not a fancy place, but delightful.

Nice cafe next to the pension

First off, this is a pension or "pensionat". That means the room standard or range of services offered are not on the level of a hotel. 
However, the setting in a park by the sea and the delightful fin-de-siècle salons in the main building generously compensate for the simple room standard. 
I stayed here for business, enjoyed the contrast from the meetings and had no problem working in the room using the hotel WLAN. 
If available, I suggest asking for a room in the main building, the villa, with en-suite bathroom. Fridhem is highly recommended.
