We spent 2 nights at the Bay Road Motel during a recent trip to the west coast. We were impressed with the accommodation, finding it very comfortable and quiet. We initially chose this place because it is dog-friendly, as we like to travel with our 2 wee dogs. It is located in a quiet rural setting around 16km (10min) out of Haast town down the Jackson Bay road, so a good jump off point for trips down to Jackson Bay. The nearest eateries are back up the road in Haast. 

Our unit was light and airy with a functional kitchenette and large bathroom. It was one of 2 duplex style units on site. The bed was comfortable and we had a nice restful sleep. Our only small complaint was that the wifi system really didn’t work well – very weak signal. And the mobile phone signal was very weak as well. But that was only a minor inconvenience. Overall we had a great stay and would highly recommend this motel to other travelers in Haast.

Great base for your stay in Haast

Stayed 2 nights at the Bay Road Motel.  Prior to arriving, had a delicious freshly cooked whitebait sandwich from a food truck in Haast township which set the scene of being away from the city.  

Motel unit was very spacious.   Self catered for all meals.  As others have said, wifi access is difficult.  We connected briefly to our mobile data when sitting outside only.

Drove up to Haast Beach twice during our stay.  Saw a pod of dolphins, and we had a picnic on the beach.  Not a soul around and felt like our own private beach.  A bit chilly to swim in the water but was nice all the same.  Didn't venture down to Jacksons Bay as we had been there on a previous trip.    Walked to the Hapuka Estuary Walk which was only 10 minutes stroll away.

Didn't use the washer / dryer but if on a longer stay, it would be appreciated.

Price paid was less than we expected, which is always a bonus.  

Watch for the sandflies.  They are everywhere, but windows have screens.  Sliding door doesn't but there is a net curtain.

Relaxing away from it all

Yes it was a bit out of town. But we had a good nights sleep. Everything in the place that we needed including being able to catch up with our washing. 
It was worth a drive from there down to Jackson Bay.

Good for an overnight

We arrived with the office closed - in typical West Coast fashion, a note on the office door "Frank - Room 2, key in door, back soon". Our room was clean, tidy & warm. Our wee dog enjoyed sitting out front in the sun. A welcoming motel, yet quiet & a nice place to stay. Thank You.

West Coast Hospitality

The 2 bedroom unit was well worn. There was essentially no wifi in the room which the owner warned us about as we checked in. No cell service in this remote area also. Nothing fancy here. Just a place to sleep.

Nicely appointed unit with space to spreqd ulout. Handy to things to do in the district. Kitchen setup adequate but frying pan lid was wrong size. Good to have netting on the windows. Shower was good.

Comfortable 

The motel is a little way out of Haast on the way to Jackson Bay but its quiet,peaceful, and pet friendly. Nice enough basic apartments, a little older but has everything you need incl washer and dryer, cooking facilities etc. WiFi did not work down our end of the property and the owner seemed a little cranky but I would recommend.

A little drive but quiet and cheap

The apartment is huge with high roof. The location is isolated but situated along a main road with very little traffic. It is quiet and we had a very good sleep. At night, if you look at the sky, you can see billions of stars because there is little light pollution. This place is only a hour drive from Fox Glacier. If you drive further, you will hit the end of the road on the West Coast. A beautiful Jackson Bay will be waiting for you. I strongly recommend this motel.

Spacious apartment with free laundry facilities 

Even though it's a little out of Haast the motel rooms were spacious and comfortable with a handy kitchenette and the owner was friendly. Only annoyance was the people in the adjoining unit who sounded like they were throwing things around in their room in the middle of the night - the sound does travel through the wall a bit. Haast beach is lovely - typical West Coast beach - wild and desolate. We had fun searching for greenstone and patting the Shetland ponies who live in the paddock next to the beach path.

Spacious room

Spacious accommodation. Comfortable bunk. Properly clean. A few blocks away from Haast (13km), but certainly well located for those who enjoy calm and solitude.
