Riad Souika

Riad Souika is a delightfully restored Moroccan house splendidly situated in the old city, but what lifted our stay to the height of holiday luxury was the wonderful service we received from houseman and cook, Aziz. He kept everything in perfect order, anticipated our every wish, was always ready with a refreshing glass of mint tea and tasty cakes when we returned from an expedition and his cooking was inspired. In particular, his lamb and quince tagine beat the best efforts of the celebrated Dar Moha restaurant by a country mile. The heart of the house is its central courtyard, open to the sky, with a splendid orange tree and an attractive scattering of tables, chairs and Moroccan furnishings. A dining room, sitting room and kitchen lead off to the sides. On the two floors above are three comfortable, well equipped ensuite bedrooms with further sitting areas, and above a rambling roof terrace, garden and small dipping pool. All bedrooms have air conditioning and there’s wi-fi access throughout the house. The old riad has been beautifully restored with a sensitivity which has created modern comfort without over-restoration or any loss of local charm. It's very well located. Enjoy breakfast on the roof-terrace while looking out across the rooftops to the nearby city walls, the el Badi Palace, and on a clear day the Atlas mountains. A comfortable five or 10 minute stroll takes you past the palace to the metalworkers’ square and then to the Jemaa el Fna, half a mile beyond.
