Old Observatory Youth Hostel Qingdao

Very nice place to have a good view over Qingdao. Have been there a few times for breakfast, dinner or just to have some drinks. As it is also a hostel always a lot of international people are there and it is nice to have a talk with people from all over the world. They speak good English!

This hostel is nicely located on top of one of Qingdao's beautiful rolling hills. The staff is friendly and the view from the rooftop bar is amazing. I stayed in a private two-bed room while my sister was visiting from NYC. She was pretty impressed that a youth hostel could be so lively, clean, and thrifty. I don't remember the exact deal, but every friday or saturday there is a keg in the rooftop bar with an "all-you-can-drink" type of special. Enough said?

Awesome place to stay

Nice view over Qingdao!

On arrival the building is impressive from outside and the area full of trees and older buildings. In the little park the old men played cards around the table and there was Tai chi in the morning. This is a good budget option in the old sector of the city where you are near to the pier and the holiday makers. The reception area has a cat in a cage, an area for a dog (which we never saw) and lots of old books. Staff were helpful and friendly being young students. The room had a double bed and a large single.  Beds were 'firm' as in most of China   Shower was  a wet room - again common in all standards of hotel. We had difficulty paying and the hotel could not process MasterCard or visa. There is a great view from the top of the conservatory and a bar which does food but we didn't try it. There were quite a few ytravellers in the evening but there was no issue with noise. Although this hostel has great potential the whole thing feels somewhat dilapidated and grubby, in need of a facelift.

Great views of city and a characterful area

Stayed in a six person room, which was a bit worse for wear but did the job I wanted it to, i.e. Get me a quiet night's sleep. 
The staff were really pleasant, especially the awesome chef/bar manager who really makes guests feel welcome at the roof top bar. 
The hostel is in the old part of the city, far from the bars and nightlife downtown. You'll need a 30 yuan taxi back home after dinner or drinks.
All in all I got a three star experience but I paid only 15 yuan per night, so it was definitely five star value for money.

As expected

Nice view of the area around. However shabby  rooms and not clean. Not well maintained at all. Might be suitable for students and backpacker. Bathrooms not divided into wet and dry areas so quite a mess if sharing the room
