Hillrise Guest House

A welcoming, homely guest house. John, his wife Jacqui and Charlie (the dog) made my short business trip relaxing and friendly. Comfy rooms, good traditional English breakfast,  and the very reasonable price, make this a much better choice than expensive, impersonal hotels; especially if you are travelling alone as I was.

I spent two nights at this lovely little guest house while attending at wedding in Durham.  I was travelling alone but was given a huge ensuite room all to myself with a choice of three beds!  Nothing was too much trouble for John and Jacqueline.  They don't provide evening meals but are were happy to let me use their restaurant for a take away and even provided plates, cutlery and excellent conversation!  The breakfast was very good - I'm a vegetarian but John made sure I had as big as breakfast as the meat eaters!!  The location is good - just off the motorway, but in a small village surrounded by countryside.  Thanks John and Jacqui - you haven't been there long but you've certainly made a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.  I'll be back!

I had looked at pictures before my visit but was still pleasantly surprised. My room was quite large and there is free WiFi. With the tea and coffee in the room there was also two twix fingers. A nice touch! Shower room needed a little TLC and probably a new shower mat otherwise I would have rated it 5. Great warm friendly welcome on arrival too

Homely in Durham

A great north eastern welcome

I stayed in the downstairs twin room, opposite the owner's living room. The B and B is run by a lovely elderly couple who can't do enough for you. I did find it a little strange when he sat with me at breakfast and ate his own and propped my door open after showing me the room however I'm happy to put this down as my own issue. 

I stayed for one night and I am not normally particular about accommodation but I did find my room to be unhygienic to a point of disgusting. I was unable to close the curtains fully as the runner was full of dirt, there was scum up every corner (the length of the corner) of the shower, and the entire room - every surface - was covered in dust. I could legibly write my name in the dust on the dresser. I accidentally kicked a shoe under the bed while changing and had to push the bed to retrieve it and found rotten food and bones (from discarded food not a dead animal - though I wouldn't have been surprised) under the bed. 

All other reviews seem so positive that I can only guess that I was put in a room that is not often let out, supported by the fact that the towels folded on the radiator had taken on the shape of the radiator and were covered in a rectangle of dust where their top surface was showing, as I'm certain there would have been other complaints had anyone else stayed in it.

Lovely people, filthy room

I booked this B&B based on previous reviews, but they didn't reveal the reality of what my wife and I experienced. We don’t book the cheapest place, usually something around £60 a night. The older couple and their old blind Jack Russell, Charlie, were pleasant enough, but the accommodation was substandard & the décor, although recently updated, appears to have been executed as cheaply as possible. Initially we were offered room 1 at the front, facing the street. The owner said it could get noisy & with the Chinese takeaway 2 doors down, we agreed. We were then offered room 4 at the back of the house. Unfortunately there’s a Working Men’s Club at the back & the Saturday night we stayed, a social event was in full flow when we returned from the pictures in Newcastle, this didn't finish until after midnight. But by far the worst part, for us, was the bed, (a twin & a single were in the room) the mattress was completely worn out & extremely uncomfortable. Although we always travel with our own thick mattress topper, even this didn't help. I doubt if we managed to get more than 3 very uncomfortable hours sleep each. We couldn't wait to leave, we didn't even bother with breakfast. When I spoke with the owner on leaving, he seemed astonished that we’d had such a poor night’s sleep, he didn't even offer a discount on the price to account for us not wanting breakfast. I'm unable to recommend the Hillrise Guest House in any way, as a place to stay, especially not at £60 per night.
