N'Kelenga Tented Camp

This was our seventh visit to this self-catering tented camp in the Thornybush game reserve. It is situated on a dam, where you can watch the game drinking, and the elephants swimming.
The camp has all the facilities one requires. What is so great that it only takes a maximum of 10 people.
Sadly the owners will close this camp in April 2023! This cuts out Thornybush for us, as this camp was the only one the average South African can afford in this reserve!

N'Kelenga is the most fantastic lodge! It is great for South Africans looking for a luxury affordable safari! When you book the camp, you have the entire camp to yourself. What a wonderful camp for a family or group of friends! The rooms are really lovely, the beds are super comfortable! While the lodge is self-catering, you never feel like it is hard work as there are amazing staff looking after you too! The camp overlooks a huge dam, you don't need to leave the camp to see the amazing game the area has to offer, but if you do, you have your own vehicle with ranger and tracker and the wild life in the north is amazing! The staff are also extremely knowledgeable! I would recommend this lodge to everyone. Absolutely love it! Been twice and definitely going back.

Our family group of 4 adult couples, had this camp for our sole use for 6 nights.  The tents are on stilts and are fairly spacious inside, with plenty of hanging space and drawers.  The bathrooms could do with updating, but functioned perfectly adequately with plenty of hot water.  The beds were blissfully comfortable.

The camp grounds are beautiful, overlooking a dam which was visited regularly by giraffe and zebra, many sorts of buck, a herd of buffalo, and one large bull elephant - all usually whilst we were eating lunch on the verandah.  The old farmhouse is now the main living area with your spacious settees and various tables, as well as a massive dining table which would happily seat 12.  The kitchen was well equipped with two massive fridge-freezers and plenty of cupboard space, including all the crockery, cutlery, cooking ware you could ever need.  Note - you should bring drinking water with your other supplies of food and beverages!  And you need to bring absolutely everything you need with you, as the nearest shops are a good hour's drive away, mostly all on dirt tracks!

There is a small plunge pool - about 5 or 6 metres in length - in the spacious grounds, which was most refreshing during the day.  Also the staff made up the outside fire for us each night for us to sit around with our drinks while we cooked supper on the brai.  

However it was the staff who really made our holiday.  Our friendly and hugely knowledgeable guide Cedric and his spotter, found us every species of animal and bird that we requested - and even managed to fulfil the wishes of one couple who have been on safari at least twice a year for the last 40 or so years, showing them sights they had not seen before.  We really did drive through and over the bush tracking many rare species.  We were also well looked after by both Emma and Maggie, who cleared up after all our meals, left the kitchen looking perfect, and cleaned and tidied our tents each day.

Everything about N'kelenga was superb - I think this was largely due to the wonderful
staff they have working there.  They cannot do enough to make you stay comfortable.
The game drives were just filled with so much knowledge from our "Guides" We all learnt so much in our 3 days.
Our Tented accommodation was very luxurious, but still felt we were away from
it all in the bush.

WE recently spent three nights at N'kelenga tented camp which, although rustic,  is nicely set out and comfortable and overlooks a dam which is wonderful for game viewing.
The staff there are a great team who look after your every need.   Cedric the guide was amazing and so knowledgeable: we have been on many game drives and we learnt so much from him.  Victor the tracker is also a wonderful personality and very professional.  Maggie works quietly in the background cleaning and always with a smile on her face.  This brilliant team really made the trip for us and we cannot thank them enough.  They really go the extra mile.
Just a small point the steps to the tents are a little steep and would not be good for anyone with knee problems.
