The Old Nurses Home Guesthouse

I loved the quiet, the charm & character of the 1940s building, the collection of antique medical objets & historic local photos. It was cosy and a comfortable warmth thanks to the central radiator heating throughout. I was definitely not too hot in my room. Very clean & all the facilities that I needed - access to a large freezer & a bath was a welcome added bonus also. Lovely grounds. Very friendly, helpful & welcoming service from the manager Shontal.

Great accommodate, ecomonical, unique and spacious - never stayed in a nurses home before. Huge kitchen and lots of quiet lounge spaces. Handy to Dawsons and Reefton Hotel for meals. Reefton is worth staying a night or two.

Quirky but excellent value, very clean and comfortable.

A great blend of history and convenience. Comfy rooms, nice lounge and kitchen. Handy location.Good value for money.Some additional kitchen items like a coffee plunger would have been handy.

It was quirky because of the purpose it was built for but had all the facilities we expected, although it would have been nice to have single-sex bathrooms (lots of hot water though). Kitchen had everything we needed, room was comfortable and grounds were pretty. Very convenient for the town centre. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the groundsman who sorted out a mix-up with our key.

I enjoyed my stay here, the place had a nice, welcoming vibe. It's a well loved building that could do with a lick of paint in places but the carpet was new (I suspect it's hard maintaining a building this old.) There was lots of Reefton history on the walls which was useful as I had visited some of the places on the drive in.

The whole building is open 24/7 but you have your own room key so security is not an issue (in fact I had the majority of the place to myself during my stay. Very surreal!).

Outside are some established gardens which hide the street making it very peaceful. The building is U shaped with a courtyard in the middle. Great to sit in the sun with a coffee (or a beer!) and a book or chat to someone. Off street parking is round the back which made it easier to keep an eye on my car (I drive a Demio!).

There's a large kitchen with everything you need to cook up a feed and a fridge/freezer to store food. Plus a lounge with settee and TV. Showers had good water pressure.

All up good value for the price. Can definitely recommend if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Reefton.


A pleasant stay

Have stayed here twice now and very happy with my stays. Good beds, well equiped kitchen and nice lounge. Have found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.  Location is fine, a short walk from town and food outlets. Good parking spot for cars and motorcycles. Showers and bathrooms are clean and there’s plenty of hot water.

Great place to stay

Looked after very well by hospitable and helpful proprietor.... a very nice bloke to boot.
Unlimited hot water and nice big old style baths - kinda retro but hey, you can pay a couple a hundy more for the exact same luxury in a flash hotel spa if you want !

Lovely old nurses home

The place is neat and tidy but there are a lot of spiderwebs everywhere which freaks me out abit.  If renting out the rooms make sure they are free of them. The bathroom needs new shower curtains, very mouldy. The place is very dated and basic.  Which isn't a problem being a backpackers. We have been to a few backpackers and camp parks around the country and this one was the most expensive and have to say not one of the nicest.  The price is very high for what you get. Seeing that backpackers are for people who are on tight budgets.  That's where I feel you being ripped off.  
The outside garden is pretty but where the rusty barbeque is, is very run down. I wouldn't want to spend time outside. Never used the kitchen or lounge facilities so cant judge on that.
This is definitely not a case you get what you pay for, otherwise I would have had a spa bath.

Passing through

The accommodation is a converted Nurse's Home. It is very large with in excess of 30 rooms. It has heaps of character.... but it is a backpackers' accommodation. It was very clean and had the normal backpackers' facilities. It was extremely warm which is important when you're in Reefton. The Manager also runs the local taxi/drop-off and pickup facility for those going bush.

History experience

We stayed here one night. It is a five minute walk from main township area. Lovely and warm lounge and sunrooms. Lots of private quiet separate bedrooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. Huge kitchen with all you need including a dishwasher. Clean and very tidy with caretaker on site.Lovely and warm with Sun streaming into lounge and sunrooms. Lovely grasses area outside and off street parking. Definitely worth staying a night.

Lovely old ex nurses accommodation

We stayed here as a stop off on our way to do the Able Tasman Great walk. This was the perfect stop after driving 6 hours from central Otago. We only needed to drive another 3 hours the next morning to start our tramp. The old nurses guesthouse was well equipped for basic needs. The host was very nice and helpful. We had the whole guesthouse to ourselves due to the off season! Bed was comfortable. And shower had amazing pressure. Was walking distance to the small town. We walked to the pub and then to the cute cinema to see a movie. I loved it! My partner was originally freaked that the place might be haunted haha but we both enjoyed our stay. From a nurse myself I would have loved to live their back in the day. Thanks for the stay.
