Ok so the management is a bit relaxed but when you need him then he's there, which was the main thing as sadly he did need to come sort something out at the hostel.
Also would suggest he got a cleaner in once a week to give the place a good once over. 
The girl who was volunteering there, Christelle, was really great, friendly & helpful. 
It was the others staying there which made it for me. 
Good location, near to all & the main bus station is less then 10 min walk

Stayed here 4 nights. The place was usually full. 16-20 beds in one big room, fans and A/C, 3 washrooms (clean!), laundry/bike/scooter service, a chilled out family room with bean bags, good wifi, free water/tea/coffee/toast/jam all day, mini kitchen!, and cheapest bed in the area. The only real cons are the beds are dirt cheap, staff is hazy as it's half run by volunteers (forget her name but she was awesome) so they may be out on break while you'd like to check-in, and that's it. Oh, and you may have to walk 3-5 minutes extra for everything else.

Average hostel but great people 

Cheapest bed in town

Cheapest accommodation in the Georgetown area.  Place is a bit of a long walking distance from the actual heritage site, but you can take the Rapid Penang free shuttle bus by walking towards Chowrasta or Campbell streets.  The hostel is quite close to Komtar, Prangin and 1st Avenue shopping malls.  It is also a few minutes away from New World Park for those who want to have their Starbucks fix.

From Sg Nibong terminal, you can take bus 101, 301, 102, or any other bus that goes around Georgetown and Komtar.  You can alight at Komtar or around the Jalan Transfer or Jalan Burma or Jalan Penang area and walk towards Lorong Ceylon where the hostel is located.  

The place itself have a lot more to improve.  I came at a time where the hostel was overbooked so there was a little confusion with the guests and the sleeping arrangements.  I met Kat, a volunteer receptionist, who also stays at the hostel--she was quite helpful and accommodating with everyone's requests.

I didn't see much of Danny but on the few occasions that I did, he is pretty much fuss free  and kind as well.  When he learned that the place was overbooked, he bought extra beds immediately.

Wifi was quite fast, but since there were a lot of us, the user capacity has exceeded and some devices must be booted out.  It might be a good idea to have 2 connections, one on each level of the house. The aircon was so so-- it can get quite warm at times --- especially if your bed is located at an area where the coldness of the a/c cannot reach.  The bed was pretty comfortable and I liked the memory pillow that was given to me.  

There was breakfast which consisted of toast and your choice of either kaya, jam or margarine.  Water was free and tea bags were available the whole day.  I'm a coffee person and I would prefer if they had that as well.  

Overall cleanliness of the place was ok, although it would be really nice if there is someone who cleans up the whole place, especially the bathroom.  Good thing the guests have a sense of communal living and we worked together to keep the place habitable.  

The whole place was really basic --- sleep, shower, and go.  The guests during my stay were quite friendly-- I had a great time connecting with them.  

Oh, one thing cool about this place is that there is a freedom wall along the stairs where anyone can write or draw too. =)

Value for money, perfect for solo travellers

if you wanna stay in a racist hostel,you should choose it. you have to inform hostel which nationality you are. otherwise you could look for another place even if you arrive late and have reservation. it was a terriable experience of mine in Malaysia.

air-con only allowed to turn on from 6pm to 11am next day (did not mention at all). it's impossible to stay in the afternoon (verrrrrrry hot). cleaning was not done regularly as dust accumulated underneath every bed. location no good. need to walk under hot sun for 15 minutes to penang road.
